1. What distinguishes a gravestone from a headstone?

This is a frequently asked question that often leads to confusion. A headstone is a stone that stands upright and contains an inscription. A gravestone or tombstone refers to the entire monument. A single gravestone, for example, could consist of a headstone, base, slab, and kerbing.
2. How much does a headstone cost?

The cost will be determined by size, style, budget, and cemetery regulations. If you want to learn more about prices, we’ll be more than happy to walk you through the process and work within a budget that suits you and your family.

3. How to choose a monument?

Our website is the best place to start. Our guides and monument gallery should give you a good idea of what's on offer. You can also visit our offices where we are able to guide you through our many samples of both stone types and accessories as well as our extensive range of memorial styles and designs.

4. How long does it take to complete a memorial?

There is much involved with creating a custom tribute. Generally a memorial can take anywhere from 5-6months to complete, however if you have a special anniversary or religious ceremony timeline, please discuss it with our team as we are often able to assist.

5. When do you start the process to build a memorial?

A common practice is to have the headstone ready before the one-year anniversary and as such, with a 5-6 month lead-time, its best to finalise the design approx. 6 months after a loved ones passing.

𝗧𝘆𝗽𝗲𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗛𝗲𝗮𝗱𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗻𝗲𝘀

Headstones are a way to commemorate the life and personality of someone you’ve lost. They can range from simple gravestones that don’t show any detail about them, to a more elaborate design.

There are many different types of headstones to choose from, depending on your personal preference and budget. The most popular types include:

• The flat headstones are an ideal way to commemorate your loved ones. A tablet made up of stone, concrete or bronze will be placed in the ground with inscription placed on the stone or in a separate plaque attached to it. Flat Headstones can be ordered in different colours, sizes and materials according to what your personal preference is.

• Raised-top flat marker (bevel markers, rear desk tablet, or sloped) is a block of stone or concrete raised to a slant from the rear or sloping front face. This is similar to a flat headstone, in that it is generally placed on the ground, however as it is sloped on an angle it is somewhat easier to read and has a more prominent presence.

• The upright headstone is one of the most traditional styles that has been used for centuries around the world. It is fixed to the ground with a concrete base, usually made from granite, marble, or limestone, and does not cover the full plot.
Generally, this is referred to as a Headstone and Base memorial.

• Full, kerbed memorials stand out from headstones in that they cover the entire grave. This is the most commonly used memorial for many cultures as it covers the entire site of the burial.

• The headstone finish is important when it comes to the appearance and durability of a memorial. Headstones are available in a variety of finishes, from polished to part-polished.

• The polished finish is best for the showing of granite, and it requires regular cleaning and maintenance to keep the shine.

• The part-polished finish is only smooth and shiny in the inscription and base area, and the rest is either sanded, sawn, blasted, or rubbed. It emphasizes the inscription and the parts of the headstone you want to be emphasised.

• Honed (eggshell or sawn) stone is where the stone is smooth but unpolished; this type of finish can be used for both sides. A honed surface make is porous, much like marble and smooth, making it easier to clean than some rougher finishes.

• Other finishes – steeled, frosted, and axed, these types of finishes are less common. These alternative finishes are acquired by using different chisels, ax, flaming, and sandblasting techniques and are not advised in cemetery work.

Here are 5 things that could be considered when arranging a Jewish Memorial.

What to write in a Jewish Memorial?

• Top of most Jewish headstones is the abbreviation 'פנּ, which stands for po nikbar or po nitman, meaning “here lies.”

• The name of the deceased will then written in Hebrew followed by the Hebrew בן, ben, “son of” or בת, bat, “daughter of,” followed by the person’s father’s given name and perhaps the mother's as well.

• At the bottom of the headstone, you will often find an abbreviation ת נ צ ב ה of a verse from the Torah, the first book of Samuel, 25:29, “May his soul be bound up in the bond of eternal life.”

• Birth and death date can be written in the Western calendar or Jewish calendar. To convert the Jewish calendar year to the Western calendar year, add 1240 to the often-used shortened version of the Jewish calendar—which leaves off the 5 in years after 5000. For example, if the Jewish calendar year is 5683, add 1240 to 683 to determine that the year in question is 1923 in the Western calendar.

• Also included are other common Jewish epitaphs from scripture, or a secular phrase that captures the spirit of the person passed.

So how do we decide what's best? If we look at Gravestones over the past centuries, you’ll notice that Marble Gravestones were quite popular dating past the 1920s.

However, Marble is slowly becoming a thing of the past. Reason being, Marble is susceptible to pollution and weathering leaving inscriptions nearly unrecognisable.

Why Granite? Granite is much harder than Marble and is less susceptible to chipping and cracking. It also has a texture that will not weather away with time, so retaining the memory of your loved ones for decades to come.
