Happy World Storytelling Day!
Today in our speech sessions we did some great storytelling in the form of a news bulletin! We wrote a script for the 'newsreader', including a book review (it got 6 stars!!) and a weather report.
Yesterday, we made a storytelling chatterbox, including a main character of Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson! It included some action- packed ideas for some exciting stories!

We had our second Lego social group today, as part of our school holidays sessions.
We've been talking about 'teamwork', compromising, and group plans while we've made shared plans about what we will all build with Lego and, of course, we had lots of fun too!

I'm back in the office today, to get ready for the busy year ahead!
However this year, I'll be without my wing-woman, Gael.π₯Ήπ Gael has had a HUGE year in 2023 and has (understandably) decided to simplify things, including giving up her work with Little Parrots.
I'm sure many of you have had the pleasure of speaking with Gael on the phone over the last few years. She is a gem and we will miss her greatly.
Gael, wishing you the best for the year ahead and I hope that you enjoy some more balance, time with the grandkids, and time to focus on you. π©·π©·π©·π©·π©·

Another interest-based learning activity with some of our school aged clients!
Our goal for the term was story planning and adding in lots of information for the reader.
Both clients are Lego fans, so we built Lego, took photos for the book, and told the story to create our own original stories!!
So much fun! π (And we learnt a lot too! π€«π)
β€οΈβ€οΈβ€οΈ
Building connections with the children we work with is essential. It builds trust, respect, and confidence that they are being listened to. π₯°
Interest-based learning + hands on activities = amazing outcomes!
This time of year can be challenging in the speech room. Kids can be tired and disengaged as it's been a long school term.
By using their interests and 'hands on' activities, we've been able to keep the kids engaged and put our skills into practice!
Over the last couple of weeks, we've made craft robots, cooking, lego storytelling, newspaper articles and more!
Lots of fun and plenty of learning β€οΈπ

So, what did we do? Made our own flexible palm tree for them to take home!

Pretty nails! π
Sometimes speech sessions are just about engaging and building trust.
Today, I was lucky enough to have my nails painted by a teenage client while we talked about what has been happening in their life.
Didn't they do a great job? π€©
Happy World Turtle Day!! π’
We've spent the day today learning about the difference between a turtle and a tortoise and making a wonderful display for our wall at the clinic!
We also learnt a turtle joke! π’
Q: What do you call a famous turtle?
A: A shell-ebrity! ππ’π
We had a fun and creative speech session this afternoon, creating a fabulous critter. The one and only...Kristiana! ππ€β€οΈ
By working together, being flexible with our ideas and compromising, we were able to create this dragerpillar (combination of a dragon and a caterpillar)! π²π

Please excuse the mess!! π³
School holidays is usually my time to reorganise, restock, redecorate and recycle β»οΈ
Unfortunately, that means creating a huge mess while this process happens. So, if you're coming in to the clinic for a session this week, be forewarned! π¨ It's a little messy!

A big shoutout to the wonderful Hannah and Danny Gamble from Thrive Occupational Therapy for Kids ! π£π£π£
We LOVE using their The Me Tree program in our speech sessions. β€οΈπ³β€οΈ
By working on building a child's positive identity (in therapies, we often focus on what the child cannot do) and growth mindset strategies, we can help children to become more confident and flexible. β¨οΈπβ¨οΈ
These skills are so important for forming new friendships, interacting with peers in the playground and being a great communicator! ππ
When you're working in a school staff room and a chicken casually walks in! ππ
Never a dull moment! ππ
In this first week of term 1, we did a bit of box construction in the clinic π¦π¦π¦
Using our imaginations and lots of beautiful descriptive language, we made some UFOs and some colourful houses! ππ¦β¨οΈ
