Cooler days calling for stewed fruit 🍂

Stewing is a great way to maintain adequate fruit intake during the cooler months and also a great way to reduce food wastage - especially if you have an abundance of one thing or fruit close to going off. Not to mention stewed fruit is amazing for gut health (and an easy way to hide your kids probiotics in).

Fruits that are delicious when stewed:
🍂 Apples
🍂 Pears
🍂 Quince
🍂 Rhubarb
🍂 Stone fruit
🍂 Berries
🍂 Feijoa

Where possible keep added sugar to a minimum and replace with a sweetener such as honey and add spices such as cinnamon and ginger.

Did you know that there is only a short window in your menstrual cycle where you can fall pregnant, and for pregnancy to occur, you have to ovulate?

So, what is ovulation?
Simply put, ovulation is the process of a mature egg being released from the o***y.

After the release of the egg from the o***y, a hormone called progesterone peaks and remains high throughout the luteal phase of the menstrual cycle. Progesterone is important for fertility as it thickens the lining of the uterus to support egg implantation if fertilisation occurs and supports foetal development for the first trimester until the placenta takes over progesterone production. If we do not fall pregnant, progesterone drops and out menstrual cycle begins!

If you do not ovulate, pregnancy cannot occur!

nutritional care during lactation.

during the breastfeeding period, energy and nutritional demands increase.
as breastmilk is made using nutrients and energy from maternal stores, it is important to support adequate nutritional intake to reduce the risk of deficiencies.

~ folate vs folic acid.

Even though folate and folic acid are used interchangeably, did you know they are not exactly the same thing?

Folic acid is a synthetic version of folate found in fortified foods such as cereal, bread, whereas folate is found naturally in some foods such as avocado, dark leafy vegetables, sunflower seeds, eggs and whole grains.

Folic acid has to be converted in the body to its active form 5-MTHF, however, up to one third of the population has a genetic variation where folic acid is inefficiently converted, resulting in a build up of folic acid in the body.

This can have many health implications and affect fertility and pregnancy outcomes.

Folate has many roles in the body including:
~ formation of genetic material (DNA & RNA)
~ red blood cell formation
~ brain and nervous system function and health
~ development of brain and spinal cord in pregnancy
~ cell division

Some prenatal have folic acid, whereas others have the activated version 5-MTHF.
Talk to you health care practitioner about which one is the best fit for you.

~ oestrogen is one of our s*x hormones that plays a part in menstrual cycle regulation & fertility.

We often hear oestrogen getting a bad wrap so here’s some of the reasons why it’s so important for our menstrual cycle health and fertility ✨

~ Without oestrogen, ovulation doesn’t occur. Just before ovulation, oestrogen peaks which causes the secretion of luteinising hormone (LH). LH then stimulates the release of the most dominant follicle, initiating ovulation.

~ Oestrogen allows the body to build up a nice thick layer of endometrium within the uterus in anticipation for implantation by a fertilised o**m (egg).

~ Oestrogen stimulate glands within the cervix to secrete cervical fluid. Why is is this important? Not only does it help to give an indication of when ovulation has occurred, but it also acts as a natural lubricant and a transporter for s***m to the Fallopian tubes. Without it, conception couldn’t take place!

Some signs that oestrogen may not be in balance include heavy or light periods, irregular cycles, breast tenderness, fibroids, fluid retention, infertility and low mood just to name a few.

If you feel like your hormones are a bit out of whack and would like some support, feel free to get in contact to book in a consult 🤍

Ensuring you have optimal iron levels prior to conceiving is important for supporting a whole range of outcomes from fertility, through to pregnancy and postpartum.
Sub-optimal iron levels can be caused by a whole range of factors including inadequate dietary intake, low stomach acid or inflammation within the gut.
It’s always best to talk to your health care practitioner to get to the root cause of your low iron levels.

If you’d like help with your hormones, fertility, pregnancy or postpartum support, come see me in student clinic. DM me for more info or book via link in bio and message me to let me know you’ve booked!

~ herbal baths

Your skin is the largest organ in your body and it absorbs everything that is put on in.
For this reason, baths can be used as a herbal therapeutic application either by way of foot soak, hand soak or a full body soak.

Swipe above for some simple herbal bath ideas to incorporate into your routine.

~ movement is medicine

Movement is going to be one of my number one lifestyle prescriptions once I start seeing patients.
Movement has presence in all different forms:
~ dance
~ yoga
~ walking
~ running
~ stretching
~ conscience breathing
~ gardening
~ pilates
~ gym workout

Daily movement is so important for optimal wellbeing as it can help to:
~ reduce stress
~ improve sleep
~ strengthen muscles
~ improve coordination
~ improve mental clarity
~ relieve pain
Most importantly, it assists with the flow of blood around your body which provides nourishment (oxygen and nutrients) everywhere from your skin to your guts!

Movement and exercise doesn’t have to be something that takes time out of a already busy day. Instead, try make it work for you by:
~ get up earlier and move
~ park further away from the door
~ take the stairs
~ set hourly reminders to get up and move
~ do a short workout whilst, or instead of watching tv (YouTube have some great ones)
~ put on a song and dance
~ make it quality time by getting friends and family involved

How will you prioritise movement today?
