WHO ARE THE ARTISTS IN THE STUDIO?
Kiki Smith
1954 –
Kiki Smith is am American multidisciplinary artist, best known for her figurative works. Raised by artistic parents, she studied briefly to be an emergency medical technician before following her own artistic path. She had some formal study but left and joined a collaborative group that informed her unconventional use of materials.
Thematically, Smith's work has looked at decay, mortality, feminism and the fragility of the human body, saying, 'I always think the whole history of the world is in your body'. More recently, Smith has incorporated the animal form into her practice, as well as extending to tapestry, mosaics and artist books.

WHO ARE THE ARTISTS IN THE STUDIO?
Paula Rego
1935 - 2022
Paula Rego was a Portuguese-British artist known for her paintings and prints. As a young child she was left in the care of her grandmother and it was here that she learned of the folklore and fairy tales that would make it into her later work. She used two tropes in Western art, the reclining n**e and the gaze, to distort traditional approaches for a more feminist take. Her style changed over her career, influenced by Surrealism and Abstraction as a push against the tight anatomical drawing style taught at Slade. She had many exhibitions over her career, including representing Portugal at the 1969 São Paulo Art Biennial. Rego was a strong feminist, advocating for women and abortion rights throughout her lifetime.

WHO ARE THE ARTISTS IN THE STUDIO?
Alice Neel
1900 - 1984
Alice Neel was an American painter who closely incorporated her personal life into her art. At a time when abstraction was in vogue, Neel preferred realism and portraiture, believing in the human connection with her subjects. Over her long painting career, she depicted political figures, neighbours, children, strangers and herself. Her subjects changed as her beliefs changed, leaning toward female n**es, pregnant woman and self portraiture in her later life.
Neel had a difficult personal life when her first child died and her husband abandoned her, going overseas with their second. Neel was admitted into psychiatric care and from here began to paint people (and women) from all walks of life, not just the sexualised portrait that had been the subject of the male gaze. Neel was a fierce advocate for humanising the female form, painting the ugly and the uncomfortable throughout her career.
