Ahh Netball,

My first understanding of belonging and community. You gave me some of the greatest friendships that will last the test of time. You taught me how to make my way through life in how you allowed me to develop characteristics that will forever be etched in my personality.

I learned to be dedicated, to strive, to collaborate, to fail, to succeed. I learnt that work ethic, resilience, preparation, attitude and perspective are integral to any situation and most importantly, that you are in control of all of them. The principles and values I attained are endless. I couldn’t begin to explain them all or what you’ve done for me.

I am incredibly grateful. Truly proud of the career and fond of the memories that have been created through you. Even teary as I sit here and write what elite sport has meant to me.

9 years of professional service.
26 years of wearing a lettered bib.
I’m not sure if this is goodbye.
Maybe just a ‘see ya later’.

Congratulations to aerial skiing Olympic champion Lydia Lassila OAM, who has today been announced as a 2023 Inductee into the Sport Australia Hall of Fame.

Lydia Lassila OAM stands as one of Australia’s most decorated Winter Olympic athletes. Her stellar career in aerial skiing culminated in a gold and bronze medal, becoming the first Australian female to compete in five Winter Games. Lassila’s journey was marked by resilience, including a near career-ending knee injury in Torino 2006, but she persevered to win gold in Vancouver 2010. Her daring attempts, like the quad-twisting triple somersault in Sochi 2014, left an indelible mark on the sport, and she made history as the first Australian woman to compete in five Winter Olympics at PyeongChang 2018.

“What I used to do in my sporting career now feels quite distant. Life has moved on I suppose pretty quickly, with family and living in a new country. It’s nice to be reminded that I used to be an aerial skier, and I did some really cool things in my career and achieved a lot. Each and everyone’s story is really quite inspirational. Those Sport Australia Hall of Fame Award events have always been a huge inspiration for me, and hearing other athletes’ stories and journeys in their careers is just so uplifting as well.” – Lydia Lassila OAM
