The Social Grocer
The Social Grocer makes surplus food available to the community to promote sustainability.
Hey all, it’s been a while… Sorry.
We haven’t forgotten you.
We will be back.
And hopefully we’ll be ready to announce our reimagined initiative shortly.
But in the mean time. Look who’s coming to Australia!!!! Too Good To Go AU is the world's largest marketplace for surplus food and they’re coming to Melbourne!!!
So, jump onboard. Give them a like. Download the app. Do all the things. We’re always super excited to see new initiatives that tackle food waste.
We've heard you, Australia coming soon 👀
Dear Social Grocer community, it is with a heavy heart that we share that this Thursday will be the last Social Grocer for a while. Due to ongoing challenges, not just in the program but also faced by the charity, we must close our doors to take some time to reimagine what the future looks like.
Whilst it's a tough to say goodbye for now, we are filled with hope for what lies ahead. Please stay connected with us for updates. We are only pushing pause and we will be back. We are committed to creating a space that is dignified, safe and equitable for all, where food is sustainable and affordable.
Lastly, we are aware that some of our community are experiencing hardship currently. Please reach out if you need food relief assistance, we can help. Lastly, www.askizzy.org.au is a fabulous resource to find help.
Hey TSG Community.
We are OPEN THIS WEEK (28/03) but we will be closed for the two Thursdays over the school holidays (4/4 and 11/4).
During this time we will be taking a break but also getting ready to make some changes. As you all know this program is growing and changing and we have our eyes firmly focused on processes that promote equal and fair food for everyone.
We look forward to making some announcements soon.
Marita whipped up some pita chips and guacamole this week using produce from The Social Grocer.
We love it when you share you recipes with us 😍.
Thanks Maria.
Mmmmmm. How good does this frittata look? Sent to us by one of our lovely customers. All made with ingredients from The Social Grocer.
Lemons 🍋 seem to be the flavor of the month currently with lots of weather damaged lemons coming through food rescue and this handy hint has come at a very good time considering my 16yo son has just taken one of my Scanpans to the edge of ruin. I wonder if it will work on that….
From Joyce
One way to use excess or old lemons…
Cut in half or quarters.
Squeeze the juice into kettle and fill with a little water. Bring to boil and let sit for half hour.
Then lightly scrub with non abrasive sponge and some dish wash!
Good as new.
Homemade passata from rescued tomatoes through & The Social Grocer in a reused bottle by the wonderful Tamara.
Can’t wait to use it.
A while back I had a bunch of mint in the fridge that started to dry. I took it out, hung I upside and dried it further. Once completely dried, I crunched it up in my hand and popped it in an airtight container as an experiment. And it has lasted ages.
I’ve used it for peppermint tea, I’ve used it in salad dressings and tonight I’m using it in Jamie Oliver’s Peas and Pasta dish.
What creative ways have you stumbled across to reduce food waste? We’d love to know.
Look at these stunning flowers a customer bright in today to show her gratitude. Freshly picked from her garden. Gorgeous.
From this week we will be closing at 1pm. We have found 1pm to 2pm to be very quiet but always fear packing up early in case someone visits. So here it’s the announcement. 1pm closing.

What a great way to use pita’s. I will be giving this a go over the weekend. Love it.

One of the things we rescue the most often are flat bread and deli meats. One of our partnering supermarkets freezes the deli meat before it’s expiry for us rather than throwing it out.
One of our lovely customers this week was telling us about how she has used these ingredients. Thanks so much Joyce.
So check it out. The Wrap Hack.
1 cut from edge to the middle of your wrap.
2. Place your ingredients in 3 of the quadrants.
3. Fold like in the pictures.
4. Toast in a sandwich press.
Enjoy.
