WHEN
28 - 31 August, 7pm
Studio, Sydney Opera House
In โCLASS ACTโ working class unfortunatepdf tells the story of a grotesque world of class and social mobility straight from her dirty mouth.
This work addresses the unspoken rifts of the class system through a bombastic, unexpected deconstruction of My Fair Lady.
Joined by dancer .i.c.e.dixon, directed by , and with some experimentally arranged orchids, Grigorโs performance shines a light on the unseen costs of a social glow up. Plus thereโll be high tea (but only for the bourgeoisie).

WHERE: Arrow on Swanston. 488 Swanston St, Carlton
In a sharehouse in 1994, a group of artists held a night called It was part gallery opening, part concert, and part party. There was a human-sized paper vase, suits tailored from coffee bags and music made with fax machines. The event left a lasting impression on both guests and performers, leading the collaborators to continue collectively as โAPHIDS.โ
๐๐ฏ ๐๐ท๐ฆ๐ฏ๐ช๐ฏ๐จ ๐ฐ๐ง ๐๐ฆ๐ณ๐ง๐ฐ๐ณ๐ฎ๐ข๐ฏ๐ค๐ฆ ๐๐ celebrates this lineage and looks to the future with Pony Cam, Deborah Kayser, Catherine Ryan, Thea Baumann, Tra Mi Dinh, Lz Dunn, Sammaneh Pourshafighi and DJ Sullivan. Hosted by Mish Grigor and Lara Thoms, with conceptual food offerings from Long Prawn, expect immersive installations, video hits and a bespoke drink on arrival.

HQ sending chookas to and the team who are working hard in the UK ahead of tonightโs opening of at the epic festival.
Itโs our job as allies to talk to people. Our families, people at the gym, at the shops, on the tram, at school drop off. Difficult conversations to help dispel misinformation and point people in the direction of simple resources that answer any niggling questions. YES YES YES YES YES
INTRODUCING: Sarah Aiken - dance and video artist for GUTFUL: Bug In The System - opening on Wednesday ๐ชฑ
Sarah is an artist and choreographer with an extensive body of work presented nationally and internationally. Solo and collaborative projects investigate assemblage, authorship, scale and the self, looking at the roles of audience, performer, subject and object and connecting tangibly with audiences, to consider performance as a site for empathy & exchange. Sarah is co-director of working with Rebecca Jensen to create work that engages rigorously with participation, scale, waste and reckless formalism, and recycles content to consider materiality and how we come together.
Sarahโs performance credits include work by Luke George, Amrita Hepi, Shelley Lasica, Natalie Abbott, Rebecca Jensen, Jo Lloyd, Shian Law, Carlee Mellow, James Welsby, Brooke Stamp and Aphids, Deanne Butterworth/Linda Tegg, Ben Speth, Lee Serle, Atlanta Eke and Maria Hassabi. Video work has been shown at the Museum of Contemporary Arts Sydney, APHIDS Contentious Buffet, Arts House, Dromana Drive In, Melbourne Fringe Online, HIAP Helsinki and The Substation.

OUTSPOKEN, UNEXPECTED, REAL EXPERIENCE, ARTIST-LED.
Weโre in our 29th year of shaking up art in Naarm/Melbourne, Australia, and we want you to join the party.
Now, you know us - we're no humdrum art organisation. We're all about smashing stereotypes, shattering glass ceilings, and celebrating creative rebellion.
We make art that raises eyebrows, ignites conversations, and makes people go, "Wait, what just happened?" But here's the thing, we can't do it alone. We need you, with your generous spirit and love for all things wonderfully weird, to help us make a splash.
In 2022, 86% of our annual turnover was spent directly on artist wages and fees. By supporting APHIDS you'll be empowering artists who are pushing the boundaries of what's considered normal and investing in the power of art as a catalyst for change.
If you are in a position to donate, you can give to APHIDS via https://shoutforgood.com/charities/aphids
Donations of all sizes are welcome and every donation of $2 or more is tax-deductible.
With love, laughter, and a bid for a better world,

Can't believe we open this show at RISING next Thursday! Grab your tickets before it's too late: https://rising.melbourne/festival-program/oh-deer
What happens when 15 orphans go searching for their inner Batman? Bambi and Batman bring a fairytale framework to a playful exploration of loss.
One of APHIDS biggest projects to date premieres next week as part of RISING festival at the gorgeous Capitol Theatre - get your tix quick!
RISING: Oh Deer! A playful performance work that burrows into pop cultureโs most beloved stories and pulls the stuffing out of the orphan trope.
Broadsheet recently paid us a visit in our studio at Collingwood Yards to chat about the resident community at .
Hereโs a little snippet from our chat with ๐
If you passed by our studio you would hear:
Loud debates. Sometimes weโre disagreeing about what colour the floor should be on a film work, or passionately debating what would make a funnier prop between Pizza Shapes or Teevee Snacks, and other times itโs about how to respond to a political moment. Big stuff and small stuff. The complex challenges of our time require big ideas and big imaginations, and we try and respond by bringing out the best in each other through rigorous discussion.
In the last week weโve spent time:
Reading the philosophy of Frantz Fanon, writing a paper about bogans and class drag, vox popping people regarding the weirdness of pink-washing, improvising comedy scenes about performative allyship, eating pastries with our Collingwood Yards friends, gathering letters of support for a grant application, collecting stories for a project from people who have lost their parents, and planning a potential tour to the UK.
Our favourite thing about our studio is:
The Collingwood Yards vision is pretty cool โ a permanent place that is affordable for artists and ensures that we stick around in a radically gentrifying neighbourhood. Our studio mates are diverse and there is always someone to borrow tools from or have a gossip with. In winter, lights firepits outside in the afternoons, which makes for a pretty cosy sign that itโs time for tools down and a wine.
