Hear from our keynote speaker Professor Angus Watson, Consultant Colorectal Surgeon at Raigmore Hospital, Inverness, Clinical Professor of Surgery at Aberdeen University and Councillor of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh.

Angus has spearheaded innovative initiatives including Surgical Boot Camp, where all core surgical trainees in Scotland take part in a highly valued skills course in Inverness. He is also passionate about running large clinical trials in the North of Scotland, most notably the NHS Scotland Colon Capsule Endoscope (CCE) programme. From a feasible trial in 2017, this diagnostic technology is now being used across the UK and has grown an international reputation.

In his presentation, Angus will share his experience working in conflict zones around the world including most recently in Ukraine and Gaza. Working for UK-Med, Angus helped to set up and operate in a Ukrainian field hospital only 30 km from the Russian border.

RACS members, it's nearly time. The ballot on the proposed updated Constitution opens next Tuesday (17 September).

The revised Constitution allows for the establishment of a skills-based governance Board, to be comprised of a majority of surgeons, and complemented by directors with specific skills to collectively oversee corporate governance, including finance and risk management. This will allow Council to focus on its core business of leading the development of professional standards, research, education and training, as well as its critical role in advocating on behalf of the profession to government.

Make sure you take the time to familiarise yourself with the proposed updates so you can confidently cast your vote: https://bit.ly/4ec3gm1

Today is R U OK? Day.

Today we focus on the power of connection and conversation to support wellbeing and mental health.

Doctors and health workers experience higher rates of depression and psychological stress than the general population. Working conditions, isolation and burnout can all contribute to poor mental health in the profession.

R U OK? Day encourages us to check in with colleagues and loved ones, fostering a culture where asking "are you okay?" is normal and can lead to meaningful conversations and real connections to support someone who is struggling.

It's also a timely reminder of the RACS Support Program, delivered by Converge International, which offers confidential support by an experienced counsellor or psychologist, for any professional or personal concerns.

Up to four free sessions are available annually to all RACS Fellows, Trainees, International Medical Graduates and their immediate family.

This time next week (Tuesday 17 September), the ballot will open for voting on a proposed revised Constitution for the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons.

RACS President Associate Professor Kerin Fielding is encouraging members to support the future of the College by voting YES in the upcoming ballot.

The new Constitution allows for the establishment of a skills-based governance Board to underpin the future of the College.

The Board, to be comprised of a majority of surgeons and chaired by a RACS Fellow, will be complemented by directors with specific skills to collectively undertake fiduciary responsibilities including finance, audit, risk and high-level governance. The core business of RACS will be Council-led.

To be adopted, the proposed new Constitution requires a two-thirds majority vote in a Fellows’ ballot. Council issued a Notice of Resolution on 16 August, with voting running from 17 September to 18 October.

Associate Professor Fielding said College leadership has engaged in an extensive period of consultation with Fellows, specialty societies and other interested parties to ensure that the new Constitution is fit-for-purpose and meets the robust governance needs of a modern and financially stable organisation.

“The new Constitution addresses key concerns that were raised, chiefly the paramountcy of the surgical voice in guiding our College. My Council colleagues and I have shared this new version with a broad group of stakeholders, and I’m pleased to say that it has met with wide acceptance."

September is Prostate Cancer Awareness Month. Prostate cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer for men in Australia and Aotearoa New Zealand. Around 3, 700 lives are tragically lost to prostate cancer every year in Australia and Aotearoa New Zealand.

Prostate cancer develops when abnormal cells in the prostate, a small walnut-sized gland found only in men, grow uncontrollably and form a malignant tumour.

As part of their regular health check-up, we encourage all men over the age of 50 years of age, or 40 years if they have a family history of prostate cancer, to discuss with their GP about testing for prostate cancer.

This September let’s spread awareness about the importance of early detection and stand together in the fight against prostate cancer.

RACS welcomes move to secure more IV fluid amid shortages.
The Australian Government has announced it has secured the supply of an extra 22 million IV fluid bags to address high demand amid a nationwide shortage.
Dr Christine Lai, Councillor and Chair of the RACS Professional Standards and Fellowship Services Committee, has been active in advocating on behalf of surgeons and patients on the saline shortages, which threatened to make worse already long surgical waitlists by causing delays or cancellations. Dr Lai previously welcomed efforts by the Therapeutics Goods Authority (TGA) to alleviate the impacts of the shortage, including the approval of several overseas-registered alternative saline fluids.
“However, this needs to be the first step in a nationally coordinated strategy that is informed by healthcare professionals,” Dr Lai said.
“The government needs to clearly communicate how it is addressing the current situation to clinicians and the healthcare sector and develop a comprehensive strategy to ensure medicines supply at all stages of the pipeline. Longer-term, we should consider the development of onshore medical manufacturing to insulate Australia from future medicine supply shortages.”

📅 Join us for our September Educator Studio Session featuring A/Prof Caroline Dowling on the topic 'Unaccredited Specialty Surgery "Training", the impact of the ‘pre-SET’ years'.

Many PGY3+ doctors spend more than two years in clinical and research posts accruing ‘points’ before applying for selection to surgical training. This group has become vulnerable to exploitation as there is no formal oversight of their progress.

📝 Our questionnaire-based study presented at RACS ASM 2024 in Christchurch aimed to assess the impact of these circumstances for unaccredited plastic, orthopaedic, ENT, urology, and vascular surgical registrars (USRs) in Australia.

In this session we will go through the findings of the study and explore ways to improve the process, from selection onwards, to ensure fairness while maintaining quality.

NSW Prep for SET Workshop: A Day of Hands-On Learning and Expert Insights

Last Saturday, the RACS NSW office buzzed with excitement as medical students from Newcastle, Western Sydney and Notre Dame Universities gathered for the highly anticipated NSW Prep for SET workshop. This event was an invaluable opportunity for aspiring surgeons to gain hands-on experience and insight into the world of surgical training and selection.

The workshop offered a comprehensive program, blending practical skills with expert advice. Students participated in sessions that included drilling, sawing, and suturing, engaging directly with the tools and techniques that will become second nature in their surgical careers. The afternoon was dedicated to developing practical Orthopaedic and suturing skills, under the guidance of skilled professionals.

Renowned surgeons were on hand to share their experiences and offer advice. Neurosurgeons, Orthopaedic Surgeons, and General Surgeons provided a wealth of knowledge about preparing for surgical training, with a particular emphasis on managing wellbeing throughout the rigorous process. A highlight of the event was Dr. Micael Su's presentation on the unique challenges and rewards of being a Rural Surgeon, as he travelled from Coffs Harbour to offer his perspective.

The workshop was expertly convened by Dr. Gemma Olsson, who, along with the team from AOA and Stryker, ensured that the day was both informative and engaging. The collaborative effort provided students with a valuable glimpse into the realities of surgical practice and training, helping to prepare them for their future careers in medicine.

Overall, the NSW Prep for SET workshop was a resounding success, equipping the next generation of surgeons with essential skills and insights while fostering a supportive and collaborative learning environment.
