!!**DRUG ALERT**!! (Melbourne/Naarm, Victoria, and VIC wide)

!!**CO***NE adulterated with opioid PROTONITAZENE**!!
A white powder sold as co***ne in Melbourne has been found to contain the potent synthetic opioid 'protonitazene'.

There have been recent serious harms in Melbourne/Naarm associated with a 'white powder' sold as CO***NE that contained the potent opioid PROTONITAZENE. The product appears to produce strong adverse effects such as loss of consciousness, respiratory depression, and life-threatening hypoxia. (lack of oxygen in your blood) Protonitazene is faster acting and is much stronger (100x) than he**in.

It is important for everyone- REGARDLESS of the substance you are planning to take- to CARRY NALOXONE. **CARRY ON YOU!!- not keep in a cupboard at home. It could mean the difference between life and death for someone.

Naloxone is a FREE, easy-to-use, easy to get medication that can temporarily reverse an opioid overdose – it is safe to use even if you are not sure whether someone has taken opioids.
HRVic does FREE naloxone administration training EVERY 1st of the month.

Naloxone can be accessed at HRVic's NSP and at participating pharmacies, other needle and syringe programs and from the medically supervised injecting centre.
You can find an approved naloxone provider on the Take Home Naloxone program webpage. (https://www.health.vic.gov.au/aod-treatment-services/victorias-take-home-naloxone-program)

Protonitazene is one of the many NITAZENES that have been circulating throughout Australia over the past couple of years.
Read more about the types of Nitazenes and their effects in the latest WHACK magazine OUT NOW at your local NSP.

Pill Testing Urgency Stressed Ahead Of ‘Unbridled’ Festival Season 01/08/2022

Queensland Greens MP Michael Berkman stressed the urgency of pill testing at music festivals as we approach “the first unbridled festival season” in a few years, noting that “it’s really important that there’s some fast movement on this”.

Pill Testing Australia are now operating the first fixed-site pill testing centre in the ACT, which is fantastic news for Canberrans and the progress of harm reduction overall.

But as we approach the first proper festival season in several years, the need for pill testing is likely (and unfortunately) to again be demonstrated, due to the many flow-on problems of the current inadequate approach to drug use.

Pill Testing Urgency Stressed Ahead Of ‘Unbridled’ Festival Season “Festivalgoers are going to be more excited about this summer than they have been for any we can remember, so it’s time to get moving.”

“A Watershed Moment for Drug Policy”: Dr David Caldicott on the ACT Fixed Pill Testing Site 28/06/2022

Huge news for the ACT and Pill Testing as a harm reduction service.

Well done to the team at Pill Testing Australia for getting this up, and we look forward to seeing the results.

Canada’s drug experiment could work here. This is why 11/06/2022

Adjunct Professor at the National Drug Research Institute, Curtin University, Nicole Lee says. "Australia’s official national drug policy is aimed at reducing harms from legal and illegal drugs. But it’s hard to reduce harms from illegal drugs while possession and use is a criminal offence."

Canada’s drug experiment could work here. This is why The ‘war on drugs’ has not reduced use, harm or the amount of drugs circulating in the community. It’s time to try a different approach.

Drug possession could be punished with a fine in NSW, under Attorney-General's plan 09/06/2022

The NSW Attorney-General says he supports trialling a "pre-court drug diversion" program that gives police the discretion to issue $400 fines to illicit drug users.
