Today we farewelled one of our longest-serving team members at the DRMC, Karen Noonan – or should we say Karen Noonan OAM! - who has been with the DRMC for nearly 25 years. Karen began as a project manager in 2001 and in 2011 she came to work in the office as Arts Administrator where she has been a hardworking and vital part of the organisation ever since. She was a well-deserving recipient of the Kings Birthday Honours List OAM for 2024, a wonderful accolade for her to take with her into retirement. All the best for your future Karen and thank you for everything you have done for the DRMC. You will be missed!

Wonderful to see that a previous winner of the Ann and Chris Krans award is now performing With the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra! Congratulations Berta Brozgul.

“MSO performs Beethoven’s Pastoral Symphony, Bartók's Piano Concerto No.3 + more.

Under the baton of conductor Benjamin Northey, the MSO embarks on a journey traversing the Australian landscape and the picturesque countryside. This special concert marks Ben's 20th year of conducting the MSO, promising an unforgettable performance.

Inspired by the beauty of the countryside, lose yourself in the idyllic world of Beethoven's Pastoral Symphony. One of the few works from Beethoven with a programmatic element, journey through serene and evocative depictions of nature with birdsongs, rustling leaves and the arrival of a thunderstorm. Ben Northey made his MSO debut conducting this work in 2003, making it the perfect piece to celebrate his long relationship with the Orchestra.

Rising pianist, BERTA BROZGUL also joins this concert to showcase her extraordinary talent as she takes on Bartók's lyrical Third Piano Concerto. Composed in the final years of his life as a gift for his wife, this concerto reflects Bartók's virtuosity at the piano whilst infusing notes of Hungarian folk rhythm and themes.

The program also includes distinguished Australian composer, Peter Sculthorpe's Kakadu, a composition named after the National Park in the Northern Territory. In the composer's words, the work 'is concerned with my feelings about this place, its landscape, its change of seasons, its dry season and its wet, its cycle of life and death.'

MUSIC ADVISORY COLLECTIVE
Funded by: YRC Small Grant $1000

The Music Advisory Collective was launched on Sunday 25th June 2pm at the DRMC to research the needs and desires of creatives locally and across the Yarra Ranges, to create and promote future music projects and to provide a network.

The following panel of multi skilled, experienced creatives underpinned the discussions in a Q and A style session: Bernie Carter, Belinda Gillam-Derry, Cr Christina Green, Brian Hogg, Dave McFarlane, Rod McLeod, Tracey Roberts and Phil Smith. Approximately 40 creatives attended this fabulous day providing a long list of ideas and initiatives.

Three questions were posed creating lively discussion and visions for creative community music making:
1. Identify the future needs for music making opportunities in the Yarra Ranges

2. Can you suggest ideas for creative community music collaborative projects in partnership with professional artists and the music industry?

3. How can we achieve an effective way to collaborate? Is it in the form of a centralized music advisory database (accessible via DRMC website) where the full gamut of comprehensive information is available, including contact details of key players who can help, facilitate and partake in a variety of projects?

Everyone spoke of the impact of Covid and the big storm, the feeling of isolation and disconnectedness. A range of creative projects were identified that would create work for creatives and rebuild connections and engagement with community issues.

An online survey was available which enabled participation and contribution for those unable to attend.

We learned that creatives valued being together and given a voice and enjoyed the networking conversations both formal and informal. A congenial atmosphere was created with food and hot drinks.

Another grant will be submitted to assist in moving forward the ideas and initiatives of this most successful event.
