Grrr the internet drives me crazy, lately we have had loads of customers coming in and telling me how you can’t use a metal spoon in honey or it will spoil.

But is this theory a myth or a fact?

Let’s find out,
Honey has been used as a folk remedy in history and contains a variety of health benefits and medical uses. For instance, it is used to treat wounds and for many other sicknesses such as sore throat or fever.

Honey is acidic due to its organic acid content. The pH scale of honey is normally between 3.4 to 6.1 and acidic substances can corrode metals and it is often feared that metal components can’t be mixed in honey, such as metal spoons or other metal utensils.

So is it bad to use metal spoon with honey?

In respect to this, not all honey has the same level of acidity. This is an old wives’ tale that won’t go away. While honey is acidic, it is unlikely that the corrosion of metal can happen if you scoop your honey with a metal spoon in such a quick movement that it’s only in the honey for seconds.

However, it is not recommended to store your metal spoon within your honey for long periods of time as this will then cause the metal corrosion.

Most honey is spun in a metal spinner so if this myth was true then science wouldn’t find any of the huge health benefits they find in honey, I always remember a old wives tale when I was a child and that was if I want my hair curly I have to eat the crusts on bread, well I did and now I’m bald!

Happy world bee day.

Bees are important to our livelihood as they help to pollinate most of the crops we eat and many that feed farm animals. Nearly two-thirds of Australia’s agricultural production benefits from bee pollination.

But bee populations are under threat. Destruction of their natural habitat, intensive farming practices, and pests and diseases are just some of the complex reasons driving a decline in both the number and diversity of bees.

Without bees, our food security is at risk.

There are over 20,000 species of bee that exist globally and Australia is home to around 2,000 species of native bee. Native bees have co-evolved with our unique native flora over thousands of years.

Some species of plant can only be pollinated by a particular species of bee. In the absence of pollination, the plant species cannot reproduce so if that bee species dies, so too will the plant.

Bees are keystone species that play a vital role in preserving ecosystem health. Bees provide essential pollination services for plants.

Maintaining plant diversity supports other essential ecosystem services including helping to regulate climate, purify air and water, build soil and recycle nutrients.

Here is another reason to visit our Knoxfield shop where you will find Melbournes largest range of raw honey.

Raw honey’s nutrition content varies by its origin and other factors. Generally, one tablespoon or 21 grams of raw honey contains 64 calories and 17 grams of sugar. Raw honey also contains smaller amounts of the following micronutrients (or, vitamins and minerals):

calcium
magnesium
manganese
niacin
pantothenic acid
phosphorous
potassium
riboflavin
zinc
In addition, raw honey is a source of varying amounts of amino acids, enzymes, and other beneficial compounds.

Research has shown that the propolis in raw honey has antifungal and antibacterial properties.

The potential for both internal and topical treatments using raw honey is significant. Honey’s effectiveness as an antibacterial or antifungal varies depending on the honey, but some varieties are being studied for specific therapeutic uses such as against Candida-associated infections.

30/04/2024

Winter is honey time as it contains great medicinal qualities and there is no better place to load up on honey than our Knoxfield shop which has Melbournes largest variety of honey.

We have 30 varieties of Australian honey just waiting to treat your taste buds.

Raw honey contains an array of plant chemicals that act as antioxidants. Some types of honey have as many antioxidants as fruits and vegetables. Antioxidants help to protect your body from cell damage due to free radicals.

Free radicals contribute to the aging process and may also contribute to the development of chronic diseases such as cancer and heart disease. Research shows that antioxidant compounds in raw honey called polyphenols have anti-inflammatory effects that could be beneficial in protecting against a number of conditions associated with oxidative stress.

The raw version of honey can also contain bee pollen and bee propolis, which may have added benefits. A 2017 review of studies suggested that raw honey may have potential protective effects for the respiratory, gastrointestinal, cardiovascular, and nervous systems, and even has potential in cancer treatment.

Pop into our knoxfield shop and check out the great varieties we have.
