The project reinvigorates a distinctive Federation-era dwelling that had undergone significant external changes. The original charm was hidden beneath layers of rigid painted render and misguided modernization. Our comprehensive approach involves a thorough interior redesign, aimed at reintegrating the structure with its red brick heritage.
Located on a corner site just 100 meters from the beach, this new courtyard house takes full advantage of its exposed side elevation, seamlessly transitioning from a single-storey street façade to a contemporary two-storey extension at the rear.

portrait of our lovely client, Ann."The design of our house at “SEAWIND” has achieved for us a perfect balance of individual privacy with our separate sleeping and workspaces, while at the same time providing a wonderful sense of space, combining intimate areas for mutual relaxation, with generous room for entertaining, a very functional kitchen, and most importantly, from every point, an immediate connection to the outside environment. Architectural details, such as the exquisite pointing of the roof, the origami complexity of the ceiling in the living area, and the magic of skylit bathrooms, never cease to delight. A perfect home for our third age.”

NOW OPEN - 23 May – 2 June. SOUTH SPACE explores the theme ‘Design the world you want’ and the continuing legacy of architects practicing in the South of Melbourne, past and present.
Our contribution is SEAWIND. A home designed for a couple who have lived together for over 50 years, SEAWIND’s defining trait is that the home is divided into two separate wings; one for him clad in dark steel, the other for her in light. These separate buildings allow for private sleeping, bathing and working, connecting at the rear of the site via a generous, north facing ‘together space’, where they may eat, entertain and enjoy one another’s company. The strong building forms are individual yet mirror one another respectfully, a reflection of their owners’ relationship with one another. With visual links to the outside from every space in the home, the opportunities offered by the architecture for the garden spaces to be enjoyed are integral to the design. Facilitating well-versed daily habits and curating a lifetime of mementos, the design is considerate at every level of their enjoyment of ‘home’ and ageing in place.

One of our favourite early projects is on the market via
The rescue and reworking of this large Victorian era home required complete removal of the existing split-level rear 70’s addition. The new scheme you see today was planned around the insertion of a large sky lit interior court centered above the new central stair. The extension creates a large family living area, opening out to the rear courtyard at ground level, with generously sized children’s bedrooms on the upper level and a secret attic bedroom accessed via a door concealed in the wall paneling. The rear façade is conceived as a curtain wall with operable timber louvres to allow ventilation and control light.

The new marble-clad bathroom pushes out of the perimeter of the existing dwelling creating the opportunity to naturally light the space from above.. ..
The brief called for the renovation of the existing family laundry and the addition of a new bathroom for teenage daughters. This was the second stage of a renovation for this client that had commenced 9 years prior.
Client comment:
'We needed a new bathroom but this room gives us so much more than we expected, and we adore it. It’s an incredible collision of privacy, light and tranquillity in a space that is at once completely luxurious and completely pragmatic.' Robyn Butler
