CORRECT USE OF EAR LINERS...
There is a phobia with the use of ear liners and drumming - contributing to many INCORRECT "deductive logic" techniques due the assumption that you have to strip every residual trace of tanning oil from the skin for the glue to stick...this is inaccurate and a mistake when using water-based hide pastes.
Instructions for using ear liners with PRO-1 HIDE PASTE:
(GUARANTEED NOT TO DRUM)
- wash/rinse tanned skin (spin-out)
- peel cartilage
- "paper towel squeeze" ONLY excess moisture from ear skin
- test fit ear liner / trim to fit
- scratch up ear liner
- turn ear "in-side out" to apply a thin layer of glue to skin
- apply a thin layer of glue to the liner
- insert liner, squeeze air out bottom of ear...done
Note: you want the ear skin to "make contact" with the liner - do not use too much glue
(causing the skin to float on top the glue, and not contacting the liner)
________________________________
COMMON MISTAKES...
DO NOT:
- apply lacquer thinner to ear skin after peeling cartilage "to remove tanning oils" - this causes significant problems...
1) it strips the skin of all lubrication and MAKES IT DRY TOO FAST - this contributes to drumming
2) lacquer thinner will permeate the skin fiber - it is not compatible with water-based glues, AND will affect the glue's adhesion...
DO NOT
- use a blow-dryer to dry the skin to remove moisture - this also causes the skin to dry too fast and contributes to drumming...it's even worse when you apply lacquer thinner and then use a blow-dryer to "dry the lacquer thinner" - 100% RECIPE FOR DRUMMING
Lacquer thinner is used with the bondo ear method...and it has some application when using epoxies...it is NOT to be used it with water-based glues and ear liners - it just contributes to the issue you're trying to prevent!!!
________________________________
You want the skin to dry at a normal rate - as the skin loses moisture the hide paste will lock down. Washing skins is enough to remove residual "surface" oil - it is not necessary to use solvents which will effectively "strip the lubricating oils from the inner fiber" and cause accelerated drying which will contribute to drumming.
Don't overthink it - imagine an elk cape that was fully oiled and sweated in after tanning, with just a wash/rinse before mounting:
- if PRO-1 can hold a 1/4-inch thick elk pedestal edge without pinning or tucking, it will easily hold a thin ear skin to a liner
