✨ Treatment for Spider Angioma ✨

This patient came in to treat her spider angioma with us, and was fully resolved with just 2 treatments using the Nordlys long-pulse NDyag laser!

Vascular malformations (such as this large spider nevi) are the result of abnormal growth of blood vessels. They can occur spontaneously or following skin trauma. Unfortunately, they do not resolve without treatment and can often increase in size with time. Although benign, it becomes a source of embarrassment for people.

Speak to your doctor and ask for a dermatologist or dermatology nurse appointment if you have any concerns.

🔹Keloid Scar Treatment🔹

Keloid scars is one of the most treated conditions in our clinic. It may be one of the most frustrating conditions to treat but also the most satisfactory when it improves.

⚡ Multiple sessions of treatments required
⚡ Steroid injection (or chemotherapy injection) into the scar
⚡ Vbeam vascular lasers are often used to soften scars and reduce redness and vascularity.

As shown above the patient has undergone 5-6 sessions of treatments. She already had some treatment elsewhere (and hence some skin thinning in the middle to start with). The tricky part was a lot of stubborn recurrences in the periphery towards the end.

Everyone responds differently, but you can improve scars a lot these days whether it’s acne, traumatic or keloid scars.

Speak to your doctor and ask for a dermatologist or dermatology nurse appointment if you have a scarring concern.

✨ June is Acne Awareness Month! ✨

🧐 Acne is an inflammatory skin condition that occurs when dead skin cells and oil clog pores and cause bacteria, developing on the face, chest, back or shoulders as blackheads, pimples or large red lumps. It is most commonly seen in adolescents and young adults, but can affect anyone at any age with any skin type 🌱

Acne can be caused by many internal and external factors, including genetics, hormonal changes, sun exposure, skincare, stress, diet and medications 👀 It is important that you don’t pop pimples! They may increase in size, become more noticeable and may also develop into scars! 😫

Something you can do to reduce risks of acne scarring is to have a good skincare routine:

💧 Cleanse your face (especially before bed)
🧴Treat with dermatologist-recommended topicals if needed
🌱 Use a neutral, non-comedogenic moisturiser
🌞 Wear lightweight SPF30+ sunscreen

If you are suffering from chronic acne, we recommend having a consultation with your physician or a dermatologist to assess your skin and inform you of suitable treatment options with creams, medications and maybe even laser treatment. Everyone’s skin is different, so help them identify possible triggers by describing your routine and lifestyle to get a tailored treatment plan 🥰

Dermatologists are medical specialists who undertook further post-graduate training under the Australasian College of Dermatologists, and carry the title ‘FACD’ (Fellow of Australasian College of Dermatologists).

The entrance to the post graduate FACD training program is highly competitive amongst medical graduates. Upon acceptance to the college training program, the intensive 4 year training focuses on all aspects of dermatology, covering complex medical dermatology, paediatric dermatology, hair and nail disorders, cosmetic dermatology, mole examination, skin cancer surgery training and a wide range of dermatological conditions. It is also unique that all trainees undergo histo-pathology training. This knowledge is hugely relevant and allows dermatologists to interpret test results accurately to tailor the most appropriate therapy.

The FACD training in Australia is well renowned and recognized internationally. For more information, please refer to the Australasian College of Dermatologists website.

We highly recommend that you obtain a referral from your usual general practitioner before seeing a dermatologist to be eligible for maximum Medicare benefit.

What is UVB Phototherapy (Ultraviolet Light Therapy)? 🧐

It is a treatment that utilises a single wavelength 311nm (in the spectrum of Ultraviolet B). This wavelength does not pe*****te deeply in the skin , so its effect is only up the the skin surface (epidermis and superficial dermis).

It is one of the most commonly used treatment administered in Australia by specialist dermatologists (FACD) to target conditions such as vitiligo, psoriasis, atopic dermatitis/eczema, generalised pruritus (itchiness) and polymorphic light eruption.

At MEDerm, we use computerised machines that provide controlled doses of narrowband UVB, and carefully start from minimal dose to work up towards an effective dose. It is recommended to do treatment 2-3 times a week and improvement can be seen after 4-6 weeks 😎

🌞 Gentle Sunlight (early morning and late afternoon) can sometimes achieve similar result to UVB therapy for similar conditions but care must be taken to not over expose to avoid a sunburn (it is quite difficult to dose sunlight accurately so for conditions like vitiligo that require high accurate UV doses, it is very difficult to treat with sunlight alone).
