Update: The TRA over Brisbane Ekka has been cancelled due to weather. The RAAF Roulettes display is no longer going ahead.

Attention pilots: A temporary restricted area (TRA) will be in force for the Brisbane Ekka tomorrow where the Air Force Roulettes aerobatic display team will be in action!

The restrictions are expected to be in place from 12:10 pm -12:30 pm and will affect up to 6,000 FT AMSL, within 5 NM of Brisbane Showgrounds in uncontrolled airspace and within 3 NM in controlled airspace. All pilots flying within the vicinity are required to monitor NOTAMs for final timings.

These restrictions also apply to drones and model aircraft of all sizes and weights operated commercially or recreationally, including drones that might be considered small toys.

Airservices Australia trials flexible user-preferred routing for shorter travel and sustainability in cross-border collaboration 09/08/2024

Pilots participating in a new Australia trial will adopt “user-preferred routing (UPR)” between Australia, New Zealand, Indonesia and Singapore. UPR allows pilots to choose the best route based on weather conditions, such as prevailing winds.

The ASA trial will "facilitate more efficient flight paths that reduce fuel usage and emissions, and optimise load efficiency" and is aligned to the ICAO - International Civil Aviation Organization's Long-Term Aspirational Goal for the global sector to reach by 2050.

Rex Airlines was placed into voluntary administration late last night after it entered a trading halt on the Australian Securities Exchange (ASX). The administrators told employees of Rex Airlines — the entity which operates the domestic routes between capital cities — that the business is in a "very perilous financial position and has access to almost no funds" and "is not in a position to pay the wages of its employees moving forward".

Bonza's demise. Playing football on the edge of Putin's business matrix - Michael West 25/07/2024

Free to read: The collapse of Bonza raises, yet again, the question of how to make the Australian Aviation industry more competitive. Can the cosy duopoly of Qantas and Virgin on major routes ever be challenged without giving more landing slots to international airlines at our capital city airports? Is the regulatory regime fit for purpose? Should we put limitations on who can own an airline operating in the local market? Are the capital requirements for airline licences adequate?

Bonza Aviation Pty Ltd (Administrators Appointed) | Hall Chadwick 26/06/2024

Bonza is likely to be liquidated at a creditors meeting on Tuesday next week. Administrators Hall Chadwick last night released a 129-page creditors report detailing major flaws in the debt-laden business. In addition to finding that, as Bonza "was unable to reach forecasted levels of sales, it was heavily reliant on funding from 777 partners to continue its operations, which ... was sporadic and delayed", the report disclosed:
• the commencement of operations by the Company was delayed by an ongoing unavailability of Aircraft to meet forecasted flights, and the approval of the AOC [air operator's certificate]
• the Company had concerns in relation to staff retention, difficulties in sourcing staff already trained for the Aircraft, and at times, experienced a lack of staffing
• due to various factors, the Company was persistently required to cancel or suspend flights and flight paths

Bonza Aviation Pty Ltd (Administrators Appointed) | Hall Chadwick Hall Chadwick Insolvency Partners appointed Administrators of the Bonza Aviation Pty Ltd on 30 April 2024 pursuant to Section 436A of the Corporations Act 2001 ("the Act") by a resolution of the directors of the Company.

Jetstar's fumes show flying high is more toxic than you think 04/06/2024

[FREE TO READ] “Fume events” are underreported, with a spokesperson for the AFAP - Australian Federation of Air Pilots explaining that dangerous and potentially deadly on aircraft, especially older planes, are a much bigger problem than anyone realises.

“The AFAP would like to see the Civil Aviation Safety Authority - CASA take this issue more seriously, including insisting that high-grade air filters be made mandatory for all commercial airliners flying in Australia, and that bleed air systems are redesigned in future aircraft. We should also see appropriate and accurate testing of fumes in aircraft cabins.”

Fume events are the result of the long-term design flaw that sees bleed air mixed into cabin air across most aircraft makers, including Boeing and Airbus ...

After a fume event on a Qantas National Jet Systems last year, the Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB) found that airborne contaminants “may result in the rapid onset of incapacitation, which although possibly subtle, can significantly affect the safety of flight”.

“Contaminants from bleed air may be being inhaled unknowingly. It’s in the interest of aircrews and passengers that operators take this issue seriously and look for ways of mitigation — but that means spending money.”

“The union is calling for aircraft to be refitted with total air filtration and stop using that is run over engines.”

With the widespread introduction of BARO-VNAV approaches over the last 10-15 years, there have been a number of high-profile incidents during the conduct of such approaches where a mis-set QNH has led to erroneous guidance resulting in near-CFIT outcomes.

Although the method by which such guidance is generated makes it hard to detect errors using conventional altitude versus distance checks, there are still cues present that can indicate an error is present.

A Masters of Aviation student at Swinburne University is studying whether there are any identifiable cognitive biases that can are hindering pilots from detecting these cues, and if there are any means to mitigate them.

The following survey will present participants with a series of snapshots from approaches that use baro-altimeter derived guidance and asks them to rate confidence that the guidance is accurate. It will then suggest a method for detecting errors and present another series of images.

Some additional background information on participant experience and operations is also asked. All participation is anonymous and no personal data is collected. The survey should take approximately 15-20 minutes to complete.

Baro-Altimeter Derived Vertical Guidance Error Detection Survey This is a survey to examine potential human factors that underly the issue of altimeter setting errors leading to erroneous vertical guidance during approaches reliant on baro-altimeters. The results will be published as part of my research project.

What causes turbulence on flights and which routes around the world are most affected? 28/05/2024

Turbulence is the leading cause of in-flight injuries to crew and passengers ... An AFAP spokesperson said passengers “would be well advised to wear a seatbelt throughout the duration of their flight, regardless of seatbelt signs”. Under civil aviation regulations, seatbelts must be worn by all crew members and passengers in various circumstances, including when the aircraft is flying at less than 1,000 feet. ✈️💺

Events that led to the creation of the Black Box flight recorder are the basis of a new musical that premieres at Brisbane’s QPAC. Dr David Warren's invention revolutionised aviation safety and now the device is on all commercial aircraft around the globe.

Working at the Aeronautical Research Laboratories at Port Melbourne, in 1953 he came up with the idea of recording both flight data and voice in the flight deck while investigating a crash of the world's first commercial jet airliner, the Comet.
