A semi-famous artist announces her plan to drive cross-country from LA to NY. Thirty minutes after leaving her husband and child at home, she spontaneously exits the freeway, beds down in a nondescript motel and immerses herself in a temporary reinvention that turns out to be the start of an entirely different journey. With July’s wry voice, perfect comic timing, unabashed curiosity about human intimacy and palpable delight in pushing boundaries, All Fours tells the story of one woman’s quest for a new kind of freedom. Part absurd entertainment, part tender reinvention, All Fours transcends expectations while excavating our beliefs about life lived as a woman.

If You Go, written by Alice Robinson, is our Fiction Book of the Month. The novel is a haunting, emotionally complex, and deeply moving portrayal of two women making sense of their place in the world. Evocative and visceral, the mystery of Esther’s life unfolds gradually with a sense of foreboding and urgency that will keep you turning the page. It is a story about the grief inherent in the human experience, the questions we must face about the future, the trauma we carry, and the trauma we unknowingly inflict. Beautifully rendered, this is speculative literary fiction at its absolute finest. We devoured this. In store now.

Because I Love Him, written by Ashlee Donohue, is our Non-Fiction Book of the Month. A searing portrayal of a woman’s experience of domestic violence, this memoir sensitively portrays the complications of love and social expectations of our communities. The story that unfolds is confronting yet incredibly engaging, and we were inspired by her honesty and compassion. Donohue, a proud Dunghutti woman, is dedicated to raising awareness of domestic and family violence and the status of women. This is an important story from an influential voice, and we know it will resonate with readers.

Our Fiction Book of the Month for May is Why Do Horses Run? by Cameron Stewart. This debut deeply resonated with us. The character-driven narrative follows the story of two outsiders who are dealing with complicated and traumatic pasts. At once both meditative and menacing, it is an exploration of the breadth of the human spirit and what we can endure (whether we want to or not). The story has a powerful sense of place, and anyone who has spent time in rural Australia will feel the descriptions of the land in their bones. This book will linger long after you turn the final page. In store now.

On the morning of 12 August 2022, Salman Rushdie was standing onstage at the Chautauqua Institution in upstate New York, preparing to give a lecture on the importance of keeping writers safe from harm, when a man in black - black clothes, black mask - rushed down the aisle towards him, wielding a knife. His first thought- So it’s you. Here you are.

Knife is Rushdie writing with urgency, gravity, and unflinching honesty. It is also a deeply moving reminder of literature’s capacity to make sense of the unthinkable.

When Winona Dalloway begins her day - in the peaceful early hours before her children, that ‘tiny tornado of little hands and feet’, wake up - she doesn’t know that by the end of it, everything in her world will have changed. On the outside, Winona is a seemingly unremarkable young mother- unobtrusive, quietly going about her tasks. But within is a vivid, chaotic self, teeming with voices - a mind both wild and precise.

And meanwhile, a storm is brewing ...

Thunderhead is a brilliant black comedy, set in suburbia, about one woman’s struggle to be free.

When they meet at New York’s Armory Show their chemistry is instant - fighting about art and politics is just foreplay. Our non-fiction book of the month is Mothering Heights, a memoir detailing a year of joy and survival in the trenches of early parenthood from Rachael Mogan McIntosh , the author of Pardon My French. We join Rachael as she navigates her way through modern-day motherhood, on her transition from two to three children where rules become hard to follow, children are always hungry and endless shenanigans take place. Rachael perfectly captures all the highs and lows that come with early motherhood, beautifully expressed with a lot of humour and even more heart. We hope you love Mothering Heights as much as we do.
