Severe Weather Warning for heavy rainfall and damaging winds
Stay informed: http://www.bom.gov.au/vic/warnings/
Issued at 11:08 pm Sunday, 31 March 2024.
Where:
For people in Central and parts of South West, North Central, North East, West and South Gippsland and East Gippsland Forecast Districts.
Locations which may be affected include Maryborough, Kyneton, Ballarat, Geelong, Melbourne and Bacchus Marsh.
When:
Heavy rainfall and damaging wind gusts developing about parts of Victoria during Monday.
Situation:
A strengthening cold front moving across the southeast of the country on Monday will trigger thunderstorms across the west of the state during the morning.
These thunderstorms will develop into a cloud band during Monday afternoon and shift east overnight into Tuesday morning as an upper trough drags down moisture from northern Australia, leading to a risk of heavy rainfall.
Heavy rainfall which may lead to flash flooding is forecast for the South West and western parts of the Central district with thunderstorms and areas of rain during Monday afternoon, shifting into eastern parts of the Central district overnight Monday and into Tuesday morning. Six-hourly rainfall totals between 30 to 50 mm are likely, with isolated falls of 70 mm possible.
Damaging wind gusts with peak gusts of around 90 km/h are possible across the central and northeastern ranges from Monday evening.
Heavy rainfall and damaging wind gusts are forecast to ease below warning thresholds on Tuesday morning.
What you should do:
The Victoria State Emergency Service advises that people should:
* If driving conditions are dangerous, safely pull over away from trees, drains, low-lying areas and floodwater. Avoid travel if possible.
* Stay safe by avoiding dangerous hazards, such as floodwater, mud, debris, damaged roads and fallen trees.
* Be aware - heat, fire or recent storms may make trees unstable and more likely to fall when it's windy or wet.
* Check that loose items, such as outdoor settings, umbrellas and trampolines are safely secured. Move vehicles under cover or away from trees.
* Stay indoors and away from windows.
* If outdoors, move to a safe place indoors. Stay away from trees, drains, gutters, creeks and waterways.
* Stay away from fallen powerlines - always assume they are live.
* Be aware that in fire affected areas, rainfall run-off into waterways may contain debris such as ash, soil, trees and rocks. Heavy rainfall may also increase the potential for landslides and debris across roads.
* Stay informed: Monitor weather warnings, forecasts and river levels at the Bureau of Meteorology website, and warnings through VicEmergency website/app/hotline.
The next Severe Weather Warning will be issued by 5:00 am AEDT Monday.

As we head towards a long weekend, it’s a timely reminder that the risk of drowning almost doubles on public holidays.
This summer has been marred by a tragic surge in fatal drownings, with 26 lives lost across Victoria.
High temperatures are forecasted across the state; complacency is not an option.
Whether you're hitting the waves, fishing or boating, always remember these vital tips:
🏊♀️ Swim with a friend: Having a buddy by your side ensures you can watch out for each other's safety in the water.
🦺 Wear a lifejacket: If you're boating or fishing, wearing a lifejacket can buy you valuable time in case of an emergency. Check out the Boating Vic app for boating preparation.
📈📉 Know your limits: If you're unsure or uneasy about water conditions, it's better to stay out.
🛑 Postpone alcohol consumption: Save the drinks for after your aquatic activities.
🚩 Swim between the flags: Check out the the Beachsafe app for life saving patrol locations. If our lifesavers can’t see you, they can’t save you.
We’ll see you on land, water, and in the skies with the Westpac Lifesaver Rescue Helicopter Service across this long weekend.
A Total Fire Ban has been declared for the Wimmera, South West, North Central, Central (includes Melbourne and Geelong), and West and South Gippsland fire districts.
No fire can be lit in the open air or be allowed to remain alight in the open air between 00:01 on Sat, 9 Mar 2024 and 23:59 on Sat, 9 Mar 2024. Know what you can and can't do - www.cfa.vic.gov.au/can
Check your Total Fire Ban status and Fire Danger Rating every day during summer, visit cfa.vic.gov.au, download the VicEmergency app or call the VicEmergency Hotline on 1800 226 226.

In the early hours of Monday morning, the 12th of February, someone came in and stole our ATV and trailer from our locked compound. These assets were community funded and was used on a regular basis to save lives.
The ATV's rego is 1LT1RD and the trailer's rego is Y3119.
We are hoping with the help of the community that someone might have seen something or knows something in regards to the stolen ATV and trailer. If you have seen it, please contact the police and let them know.
Please share this around the community and hopefully we can get it back to continue serving the community with it!
Thank you and regards,
Sorrento SES.
We were very pleased to receive a generous donation from The Rosebud Rockers to help us help the community.
Did you know that all moneys donated to an SES unit are tax deductible, and are retained by the unit (and spent locally wherever possible) to meet the cost of providing our free service to the local community?
With gratitude Rosebud Rockers.
Yesterday Sorrento SES members attended 4 assist ambulances carry-outs off of the back beaches on the Peninsula and a search in the evening for a missing person as well.
We would just like people to understand that some of the back beaches are quite dangerous and are not attended by lifeguards. Also, there is not a lot of phone reception therefore it can be difficult to get ahold of emergency services quickly.
We understand that the back beaches are beautiful and are a great place to visit. But please take care and read the signs.
We will always be there to help you, but please stay safe whilst visiting the back beaches on the Peninsula!
🐾 Hey pet parents, it's gonna be a hot one this Sunday - so it's time to think about how you're going to help keep your furbabies cool.
🌡️ We suggest lots of water, shade and and avoiding going for walkies to keep those paws safe from hot pavements (and maybe a few extra treatos for the good bois and girls).
🧡 We'd love to see some photos of your furry friends and how you keep them cool, show us in the comments 👇👇👇
Just a reminder that school is back this week! Meaning school zones will be back in force.
To all of the new preps out there starting your school journey, have a wonderful first year! And all of those continuing their journey, have a great year as well!

Download the Emergency Plus app! 📲
Emergencies can happen in places that are difficult for a caller to describe such as an unmarked stretch of beach, bush track or unfamiliar road. 🍃
Emergency Plus is a free life-saving app that helps Triple Zero (000) callers provide critical location details required for emergency services.
When callers need to report an emergency in hard-to-find locations, the app provides the option to tell emergency services their location, either by their closest street address, GPS coordinates or what3words address. 🚑
The what3words function works offline, so it can be used in remote areas with poor data connection and can confirm an exact location quickly and accurately using just three words.
