Headspace Homepage Redesign - Digital Design 21/01/2024

We’re proud to announce that our work with headspace is a finalist in the Digital Design category of the Victorian Premier’s Design Awards for 2023.

The Portable team partnered with headspace to redesign the homepage of their existing website, with the goal of providing an intuitive ‘launch pad’ which would better serve the ever-changing needs of their primary audience - young people in need of mental health and wellbeing services.

Since the website's initial launch, the organisation had grown, campaigns had multiplied, and research had shown that website visitors were more likely to find information secondarily through the homepage. This translated into a need for a solution which offered effective guidance and efficient navigation to helpful information and relevant services.

Victoria Legal Aid Self-Help Tools - Digital Design 18/01/2024

We're excited to announce our work with Victoria Legal Aid has been recognised as a finalist in the 2023 Victorian Premier's Design Awards.

Seeking to build a digital transformation that would make legal aid more accessible to the public, particularly individuals experiencing family violence, the Portable team was engaged to build a series of ‘decision-tree style’ self-help tools which seamlessly integrated into the VLA website.

By working closely with lived experience individuals, we were able to ensure that the final product effectively encapsulated the unique needs and circumstances of individuals facing various legal situations, resulting in a truly human-centred design that not only simplifies the process of navigating complex legal challenges but which also offers increased operational efficiency within VLA.

Portable has launched a nationwide survey to find out about the needs of organisations operating in the social impact sector in relation to AI.

We're keen to hear from anyone who works for a government agency, a social enterprise, a non-profit or another other social impact organisation.

The survey closes on the 31st of January, after which time the team at Portable will be using the results to formulate some practical support activities, as well as to help influence a wider sector response.

This aims to be the first release of what will be an annual publication that covers trends across the sector.

Fortunately, there’s ‘Connect the 40%’, a digital platform which creates connections between elderly people and those in their community by facilitating personalised gift-giving that is sure to brighten somebody’s day.

Developing Artisans: Portable’s experience at Laracon AU 2023 03/12/2023

Since first releasing in 2011, Portable has used the Laravel framework to build and deliver a range of digital applications in partnership with organisations from across Australia's public and private sectors, spanning industries including health and wellbeing, data and analytics, mental health services, and more.

Which is why Technology Lead, Kath Young, was so keen to see Portable sponsor Laracon AU when we heard that it would be returning in 2023, after a 4-year hiatus.

Check out our latest publication for a first-hand reflection from Kath's time at Laracon AU 2023 earlier this year, including the insights and learnings that stood out after two days of learning, growing and mingling in Sydney alongside the local Laravel community.

Royal Commission into Defence and Veteran Su***de 01/11/2023

Last year the Royal Commission into Veteran Affairs released its Interim Report which put forward recommendations considered so urgent that they were released direct to the public in order to drive immediate change.

Unfortunately, this will not come as a surprise to those who are retired or currently serving in the Australian Defence Force and have experienced this culture and system first-hand.

As a team of human-centred designers, researchers, and strategists, we bring a unique lens to the way that we consider solving complex social challenges. Our extensive work in this space has taught us that in order to find innovative solutions, you often need to take an innovative approach to get there.

Download the report to see how our team unpacks and simplifies the findings of the Royal Commission through a design lens, outlining:

➡️ The key findings and subsequent impact on the mental health of those in the Australian Defence Force

➡️ The immediate actions passed down as recommendations to the Australian Government by the Royal Commission

➡️ How we can use human-centred design thinking to solve these issues

➡️ Portable's recommendations and the steps we'll be taking to support those impacted

Nearly half of all Australians will need mental health support at some stage in their lives, with many showing up to work while facing mental health challenges and few feeling like they can talk about it with their colleagues.

Which is why we hosted a Big Blue Table morning tea this week, supporting our partners at Beyond Blue by helping spread awareness for Mental Health Month and raising funds to fight the stigma around mental health.

Portable committed to matching all staff donations submitted in the lead-up to our morning tea — thanks to the hard work of our People & Culture team, we've raised a grand total of $1,180.00 as a result!

Mental Health Month isn't over yet and there's still time to get involved!

Partnering with Purpose: Portable and Code Like a Girl join forces 06/10/2023

Sharing some exciting news that's had our spirits soaring this week 🎉

The Bank Australia website, which we had the pleasure of developing, has won the Good Design Award in the "Digital Design Web Design and Development" category!

Why This Win Matters 🌟
This recognition goes beyond mere pixels and code—it’s a testament to what can be achieved when mission-aligned organisations come together. We're talking about the fusion of cutting-edge technology, human-centred design, and values-driven initiatives to create a digital platform that truly serves the end-user, not just the business.

The Making of an Award-Winning Site 🛠️
To pull this off, we used agile, sprint-based approaches. Collaborative workspaces were our bread and butter, and regular fortnightly showcases helped keep everyone in sync. We led the technology approach, laying down the architecture on Webflow, a no-code CMS that's shifting the paradigm in the way content can be managed.

A ‘Clean Money Movement’ Aligned Partner 🌍
Being part of this journey was extra special for us at Portable, given Bank Australia’s commitment to the 'clean money movement'. We share the belief that how you handle your money can be a force for good. So, the alignment was more than just professional—it was philosophical.

Here’s to More Journeys Ahead 🚀
This win validates our drive for innovation, and sets a precedent for what the future could hold in the realm of digital transformation. A heartfelt thanks to Good Design Australia and to every hand, keyboard, and creative mind involved in this project.

Finally, a massive congratulations to the amazing team at Bank Australia and to our purpose-driven partners — Words for Things, Paper Giant , Harvey. 🏆

The result? A digital platform which empowers ANZSOG to inspire thousands of public servants, ensuring an inclusive experience and alignment with their core pillars of Education, Thought Leadership, and Research and Advisory. Explore our journey and impact.

Conversation starters - Precious Time 23/05/2023

This week we would like to join the sector in celebrating those working in palliative care.

At Portable we understand how important it is to respect the wishes and needs of those who express their preferences about how they wish to experience the last stages of life.

Which is why we are proud to have worked with North Western Melbourne PHN on the design and build of Precious Time, an online end of life services directory for people at the end of life, and those who care for them.

As part of Precious Time, we launched the Conversations Hub which provides conversation-starters around palliative care and advance care planning, helping to create important conversations.

The theme of this year's National Palliative Care Week aims to put ‘Matters of Life and Death’ front and centre in Australia’s consciousness and to encourage end-of-life conversations.

Learn more about this year's theme in this compelling video with Camilla Rowland, Chief Executive Officer at Palliative Care Australia: https://hubs.ly/Q01QNn-s0

Portable seeks out areas across social need and policy failure to create transformational change using research, design and tech

We work with government and NGOs to bridge the gap between policy and aid, tackling problems that are too elusive or too complex to tackle on your own. We believe that technology and design can be used to make real impact on the biggest challenges facing society today.

Our obsessions include thinking about how government workers hack the bureaucracy to get stuff done, how vulnerable people can better access justice, what office life of the future looks like, why infrastructure needs design thinking, and how the experience of death and ageing can be a little less horrible.

We care about these big issues, among many others, and we work with partners to get there. But often, with gaps in policy, we then get to work on our own research and development to create reform products.
