Did you undertake work related self-education this year?
You can claim back investments made in self-education when the training is related to your work. In order to make this claim, the education undertaken must have a “sufficient connection” to your current employment and income according to the ATO.
The ATO provides some guidelines that can improve the chances of self-education being considered a work related expense:
1. The study in question must be related to the specific skills utilised in your current employment
2. Increase the likelihood of a pay rise from your employment
3. Your current employer has encouraged you to undertake the course and/or funded all or part of the course
If your self-education falls under the above categories it may be eligible for a deduction. All costs associated with the course, such as the course fees and additional expenses such as a textbooks, stationery and some travel. Please note HECS/HELP charges are not deductible as fees.
Did you make any charitable donations this financial year?
If you’ve made charitable donations throughout the last financial year you are able to claim them back on your tax return. Donations must be of at least $2 in value and the organisation must be registered as a deductible gift recipient (DGR).
Credit card statements, web receipts and payment summaries can all be used as proof of a donation.
The donation must be considered a true gift and you may have to prove that you did not receive anything in return.

When it comes to personal superannuation, taxpayers can make additional contributions over and above your employer’s direct contributions and salary sacrifice contributions.
However, for your super contributions to be deductible, the following must be satisfied:
* You must have paid the contribution to your super fund prior to 30 June.
* You must notify the superannuation fund and advise them of your intention to claim a deduction. This is done by completing and lodging a ‘Notice of Intent to Claim’ form with your super fund.
* You must have received a confirmation from your super fund confirming the amount received.
It is advisable to seek financial advice prior to making additional superannuation contributions to ensure you do not breach the contribution threshold in any one year.

Common entitlements that many miss out on include vehicle expenses for work, phone and internet expenses, home office costs, donations made to charities and more.

Did you know that you can claim a deduction for your internet or phone if you use it for work related activities? With more and more Australians working from home it is important to know that you can claim certain expenses on your tax return, such as phone and internet usage, if they are essential to your employment.
When it comes to internet and mobile phone claims, the ATO is aware that individuals also use their devices for personal reasons, such as streaming movies and so on. The ATO is also aware that a major portion of most people’s mobile phone plans relates to data costs, rather than phone call costs. So, if you use your phone primarily for calls and not data then your claim needs to reflect that situation.
It is recommended that internet claims be between 10% to 20% of the monthly cost, which then caters for family time to stream information, entertainment and so on.
Phone claims can be a higher percentage. However, catering for small or large data usage for work needs to be considered.

Did You Work from Home this Financial Year?
In the post COVID-19 era, more of us are working from home than ever before. If you've invested in a home office, you may be able to claim some of your expenses back in your 2022 tax return.
But, keep in mind that it can be very complex when assessing eligibility to claim a portion of home office expenses. We've outlined the key points below. Just remember, if all this sounds too tricky to navigate, start your tax return with us—our experts are here to help.
Home Office Claims for Sole Trading Businesses
You can use the ATO calculator if you operate a business from your home such as a hair dressing or motor mechanic business that requires a dedicated work space and fixed equipment etc, or a sole business owner who has set up a dedicated office space for your business, including separate access for customers, business signage and customer facilities.eg lawyer operating a business from home. This dedicated space cannot be useful for any purpose other than conducting your business. If you use the ATO calculator, then records also need to be maintained as such claims can result in capital gain issues in the future should you sell your property.
If your sole trading activities are generally conducted on customer sites, eg plumber, then your home office claim should be similar to employee home office claims below.
Home Office Claims for Employees
For employees, it is very unusual for the ATO calculator using a percentage of home costs to be applicable. One exception may be in situations where employers have established regional work locations and are using an employees’ premises as their only office representation. However in most employee situations the following options apply.
ATO $0.80 per hour Rate
The ATO has advised that the $0.80 per hour method can be utilised, based on the hours worked at home during the year.
If you elect to use the $0.80 per hour, you cannot then claim additional expenses such as printers, stationery, internet percentage and so on. The $0.80 per hour rate caters for all expenses including desk, chair, telephone, stationery, computer and internet during that period. For example, if you worked 200 hours worked at home at $0.80 per hour, then you could claim $160. No other home office expenses can be claimed.
ATO $0.52 per hour Rate
If you opt to claim the lower $0.52 per hour rate, you must have a dedicated work space that is not used for other purposes (such as a study). If you claim the $0.52 rate per hour, you can also claim other expenses such as stationery, business use of internet, business use of mobile and so on. The ATO notes that the home internet in most cases is set up primarily for private use such as streaming and as such business internet claims should be 10%-15% of the monthly cost only. Also the $0.52 rate does cater for the cost of a desk and chair, so these cannot be claimed separately.
When it comes to superannuation deductions, you can make additional contributions over and above your employer’s direct contributions and salary sacrifice contributions. However, for your super contributions to be deductible, the following must be satisfied:
1. You must have paid the contribution to your super fund prior to 30 June.
2. You must notify the superannuation fund and advise them of your intention to claim a deduction. This is done by completing and lodging a ‘Notice of Intent to Claim’ form with your super fund.
3. You must have received a confirmation from your super fund confirming the amount received.

Wanting to know if you can claim a tax deduction if you’ve undertaken self-education in relation to your current employment? Self-education claims can be one of the most confusing aspects of a tax return to navigate.
Important points to note that help to substantiate self-education claims are:
Does the education relate to your existing income earning role? If it improves your skills for your current role, which may lead to pay increases in the future, the fees paid are normally deductible—apart from HECS. If the course positions you for a change in role or a new position, the fees may be considered as being incurred pre the income event and therefore not eligible to claim as a deduction.
If your employer has encouraged you to undertake the course, contributed to paying part of the fees and provided paid study leave, those actions will help support eligibility for the deduction claim.
