Dr Sudee Vipulaguna is now seeing patients at Medical for Everybody Chirnside Park!
The Stroke Foundation recommends the F.A.S.T. test as an easy way to remember the most common signs of stroke. Using the F.A.S.T. test involves asking these simple questions:
Face: Check their face. Has their mouth drooped?
Arms: Can they lift both arms?
Speech: Is their speech slurred? Do they understand you?
Time Is critical. If you see any of these signs call 000 straight away.
Other signs of stroke:
The following signs of stroke may occur alone or in combination:
- Weakness or numbness or paralysis of the face, arm or leg on either or both sides of the body
- Difficulty speaking or understanding
- Dizziness, loss of balance or an unexplained fall
- Loss of vision, sudden blurring or decreased vision in one or both eyes
- Headache, usually severe and abrupt onset or unexplained change in the pattern of headaches
- Difficulty swallowing
Sometimes the signs disappear within a short time, such as a few minutes. When this happens, it may be a transient ischaemic attack (TIA). After a TIA, your risk of stroke is higher. Stroke can lead to death or disability. A TIA is a warning that you may have a stroke and an opportunity to prevent this from happening.
A stroke happens when blood supply to the brain is interrupted. Blood is carried to the brain by blood vessels called arteries. Blood contains oxygen and important nutrients for your brain cells. Blood may be interrupted or stop moving through an artery, because the artery is blocked (ischaemic stroke) or bursts (haemorrhagic stroke). When brain cells do not get enough oxygen or nutrients, they die. The area of brain damage is called a cerebral infarct.
Every stroke is different. Each person affected by stroke will have different problems and different needs.
There are several factors that determine the effects of a stroke and that impact recovery. These factors include:
- type of stroke
- location of the blocked or burst artery
- which area of the brain is damaged
- how much brain tissue is permanently damaged
- general health before the stroke
- level of activity before the stroke.
Each half of the brain is divided into areas called lobes. The different areas control different functions of your body. These functions include how you move your body, receive sensory messages (such as touch, sight or smell), use language and think.
Because different arteries supply different areas of the brain, where the brain is damaged will determine which functions are affected.
The left half of the brain (left hemisphere) controls most functions on the right side of the body, while the right half of the brain (right hemisphere) controls most functions on the left side.
WABA coordinates the global World Breastfeeding Week (WBW) campaign that aims to inform, anchor, engage and galvanise action on breastfeeding and related issues. Starting in 1992 WBW is celebrated every 1-7 of August.
This year WBW focuses on strengthening the capacity of actors that have to protect, promote and support breastfeeding across different levels of society. These actors make up the warm chain of support for breastfeeding. Target audiences including governments, health systems, workplaces and communities will be informed, educated and empowered to strengthen their capacity to provide and sustain breastfeeding-friendly environments for families in the post pandemic world.
Breastfeeding is key to sustainable development strategies post-pandemic, as it improves nutrition, ensures food security and reduces inequalities between and within countries.

Sean Frost is a registered nurse who completed his qualification to become a Diabetes Educator in 2020. His passion for diabetes can be attributed to his adopted mother, who herself had Type 1 Diabetes.
He is currently a member with Diabetes Australia as well as the Australian Diabetes Educators Association (ADEA).
His role within the practice involves patient education on how to effectively manage diabetes and how to reduce the risks of diabetes related complications.
This can be done by a combination of lifestyles factors such as adjusting a diet, increasing exercise and taking diabetes medications.
Sean also works alongside a team of excellent GPs and allied health professionals, such as podiatry, exercise physiology, dental and a dietitian to ensure all aspects of diabetes management can be addressed in one place.
Sean is currently available for diabetes education appointments on Monday's and Friday's.

What is diabetes?
Diabetes is a serious complex condition which can affect the entire body. Diabetes requires daily self care and if complications develop, diabetes can have a significant impact on quality of life and can reduce life expectancy.
When someone has diabetes, their body can’t maintain healthy levels of glucose in the blood. Glucose is a form of sugar which is the main source of energy for our bodies.
For our bodies to work properly we need to convert sugars from food into energy. Sugars from food are converted into glucose. A hormone called insulin is essential for the conversion of glucose into energy. In people with diabetes, insulin is no longer produced or not produced in sufficient amounts by the body.
So this National Diabetes Week, let’s rethink how we think about diabetes.
Let’s reduce the burden with more compassion.
Let’s reduce the blame with more understanding.
Let’s reduce the barriers and help people get support.
Let’s rethink diabetes.
