The recent installation of Peter, Tommie & John at SAM was quite dramatic.

In 2006 Kate Daw and I worked with a story from the 1968 Olympic Games told to us by Australian athlete Peter Norman. We all lived within minutes of each other so this is a local story which also gave us access into one of the most influential political actions and images of the 20th century.

The cassette tape from our interview with Peter was thought permanently lost until it re-emerged earlier this year. The audio quality is not good, but I’ve been able to extract and transcribe key passages to construct a framework for this new artwork.

Sadly Peter died unexpectedly while we were creating the artwork in 2006. Tommie Smith and John Carlos, flew to Melbourne to carry Peter’s coffin from Williamstown Town Hall.

While facing the consequences of their political action, this new work for SAM focuses on the triumph of their enduring personal friendship.

Peter Norman’s story is more familiar today than in 2006 but still deserves to be much better known. I want to use the opportunity at SAM and the occasion of the upcoming Paris Olympic Games to remind people who already know and to introduce Peter’s remarkable story to those who don’t. SR

Lewin’s Honeyeater - John Lewin was an English artist regarded as the first professional artist in Australia when he arrived in 1800. His work is interesting today, from the point of view of understanding what Europeans were able or willing to see when they arrived. Lewin was not a huge success in Australia, the only commemoration of colonial Australia’s ‘first’ professional artist is this medium sized, brown bird with a striking yellow ear patch.

The Bakehouse Public Art project is back for 2023, and we are thrilled to announce Eric Brown as the first artist in this year's series!

The Kamilaroi artist's drawings are made using a pigment he creates from charcoal remnants, foraged from campfires. To capture the subtleties of the charcoal marks and wide tonal range of his drawings, the work has been rendered through a half-tone dot, applying a contemporary technology to the traditional Kamilaroi motif - one which describes moving water or a river.

A senior artist and curator based in Shepparton on Kaiela Dungala country, Eric has been involved in workshops and printing projects at Spacecraft Studio for over 10 years. In their most recent collaboration, Brown and Spacecraft Studio have developed the large scale paste-ups which can be viewed on the Hoddle Street billboards, overlooking Richmond.

Next Saturday we’ll be showing a collection of Short Story paintings alongside Hitomi Iketani’s wonderfully clever Small Factory Ring project. The studio has been working with Hitomi for over 15 years to realise a series of remarkable projects travelling from Melbourne to Japan. It gives us great pleasure to welcome an innovative design project to the studio from Tokyo.

We use the title Short Stories to describe the studios smaller paintings, from the backing cloth series or the botanical studies.
