๐ŸŒŸDental disease in cats and dogs can lead to a range of health issues, some of which can be quite serious if left untreated. Here are some common health problems associated with dental disease in pets:
1. Pain and Discomfort
โ€ข Gingivitis and Periodontitis: Inflammation of the gums (gingivitis) can progress to periodontitis, where the tissues supporting the teeth are destroyed, causing significant pain.
โ€ข Toothaches: Untreated dental disease can lead to severe tooth pain, making eating difficult and painful.

2. Broken/Fractured Teeth
โ€ข Trauma and Infection: Broken or fractured teeth can occur from trauma or chewing on hard objects, leading to exposed nerves and potential infection.
โ€ข Pain and Sensitivity: Such injuries can cause significant pain and sensitivity, making it difficult for pets to eat or chew properly.

3. Systemic Health Problems
โ€ข Heart Disease: Bacteria from the mouth can enter the bloodstream and travel to the heart, causing conditions like endocarditis (inflammation of the heart's inner lining).
โ€ข Kidney and Liver Disease: Similar to heart disease, bacteria can affect the kidneys and liver, leading to infections and organ damage.

4. Nutritional Issues
โ€ข Difficulty Eating: Painful teeth and gums can make chewing difficult, leading to reduced food intake, weight loss, and malnutrition.
โ€ข Selective Eating: Pets may refuse hard food and only eat soft food, which may not provide balanced nutrition.

5. Behavioural Changes
โ€ข Irritability and Aggression: Chronic pain from dental disease can make pets more irritable or aggressive.
โ€ข Lethargy: Pets may become less active and playful due to discomfort.

6. Bad Breath (Halitosis)
โ€ข Odor: Bad breath is a common sign of dental disease and can indicate the presence of plaque, tartar, or infection.

7. Infections and Abscesses
โ€ข Oral Infections: Bacterial infections in the mouth can lead to abscesses, which are painful and can cause swelling in the face or jaw.
โ€ข Bone Loss: Severe infections can lead to the destruction of the jawbone.

8. General Health Decline
โ€ข Weakened Immune System: Chronic infections can weaken the immune system, making pets more susceptible to other illnesses.
Prevention and Treatment
โ€ข Regular Dental Check-ups: Regular veterinary check-ups and professional cleanings can help prevent dental disease.
โ€ข Home Dental Care: Brushing your pet's teeth, providing dental chews, and maintaining a healthy diet can support dental health.
โ€ข Early Intervention: Addressing dental issues early can prevent more serious health problems and improve your pet's quality of life.

๐ŸŽ†Proper dental care is crucial for maintaining the overall health and well-being of cats and dogs. ๐Ÿฆท๐Ÿชฅ๐Ÿถ๐Ÿฑ

๐Ÿ“ข August is National Dental Month for Pets! ๐Ÿฆท๐Ÿพ

Give your pets the gift of a healthy smile this August by focusing on your pet's dental health. Dental disease is one of the most common health issues in pets, but it's also one of the most preventable. August is dedicated to raising awareness about pet dental health and we are excited to offer some fantastic promotions to help keep your furry friends' teeth in top shape!

๐Ÿ“ข๐ŸšจAugust Dental Month Specials๐Ÿ’ฅ๐Ÿ“ข
To encourage all pet parents to prioritise their pet's dental health, weโ€™re offering:
โœจ Free Dental Health Checks: Bring your pet in for a comprehensive dental check-up at no cost.

โœจ Fixed Price Scale and Polish: Keep your pet's teeth clean and shiny with our special fixed price for scaling and polishing.

โœจ 10% Off Procedures if Extractions are Needed: If your pet requires any extractions, you'll receive a 10% discount on the procedure.

But hurry, these promotions end on August 31st! Dental checks must be booked within August, but procedures can be scheduled until the end of September.

Why is Dental Health Important for Pets?
โ€ข Prevents Pain and Discomfort: Dental disease can cause significant pain and discomfort for your pet. Regular check-ups and cleanings can prevent issues like tooth decay and gum disease.

โ€ข Avoids Serious Health Issues: Poor dental hygiene can lead to more serious health problems, including heart, liver, and kidney disease. The bacteria from infected gums can enter the bloodstream and affect these vital organs.

โ€ข Ensures Fresh Breath: No one likes bad breath, not even your pets! Regular dental care keeps your pet's breath fresh and clean.

โ€ข Maintains Overall Well-being: Good dental health contributes to your pet's overall well-being and quality of life, ensuring they stay happy and healthy for years to come.

โ€ข Pets Hide Their Pain: Pets tend to hide their pain, so just because your pet is eating doesnโ€™t mean there isn't an issue. Regular dental check-ups are essential to catch problems early.

Donโ€™t wait until itโ€™s too late! Take advantage of these offers and ensure your petโ€™s dental health is in tip-top condition.

The 29th of June is World Day Against the Abandonment of Domestic Animals

Today, we're diving into a topic that can be a bit touchy for some - CBD oil. You may have heard about it, but what exactly is it, and how can it benefit our furry friends? ๐Ÿพ

๐ŸŒŸ Meet Courage, Our Brave Patient ๐ŸŒŸ

We are thrilled to share the heartwarming story of Courage, one of our cherished patients who has recently finished chemotherapy and is now in remission! Courage was diagnosed with a mast cell tumour and completed his chemo in March. Since starting on CBD oil, Courage showed remarkable improvements throughout his treatment. His appetite remained strong, and he regained the weight he initially lost during the first week of chemo. His playful, happy demeanour stayed intact, bringing joy to everyone around him.
Courageโ€™s blood levels remained optimal for continuing chemotherapy, and the flavoured CBD oil made it easy for him to take without any unwanted side effects. His owner believes the CBD oil added an extra level of quality to his life during this taxing ordeal and highly recommends it for pets undergoing similar treatments.

๐ŸŒฟ CBD Oil for Pets: What You Need to Know ๐ŸŒฟ

CBD oil has been making waves in veterinary medicine for its potential to improve the health and well-being of our furry friends. But what exactly is it, and how can it benefit pets like Courage? ๐Ÿพ
CBD, short for cannabidiol, is a compound derived from the cannabis plant. Unlike THC, another compound from the same plant, CBD does not have psychoactive effects, meaning it won't make your pet "high." Instead, CBD offers a variety of potential health benefits:
โœจ Pain Relief: CBDโ€™s anti-inflammatory properties can help alleviate chronic pain from conditions like arthritis.
โœจ Anxiety and Stress: CBD promotes relaxation and reduces anxiety levels, helpful for pets dealing with separation anxiety, loud noises, or other stressors.
โœจ Seizure Management: CBD oil can help reduce the frequency and severity of seizures in pets with epilepsy.
โœจ Improved Appetite and Nausea Control: CBD stimulates appetite and reduces nausea, making it beneficial for pets undergoing treatments like chemotherapy.
โœจ Overall Well-Being: CBD oil supports general wellness, aiding in issues ranging from skin conditions to digestive problems.

Itโ€™s important to note that h**p products, often marketed for pets, do not have the same therapeutic attributes as CBD oil. H**p oil, derived from h**p seeds, lacks the high concentrations of CBD necessary for these therapeutic effects. Always ensure you're choosing the right product for your pet's needs.

At Ringwood East Vetcare, we understand that every pet is unique. If you're curious about whether CBD oil might be a good fit for your furry companion, we encourage you to schedule a consultation with our team. We'll provide personalised advice and ensure you have all the information you need to make an informed decision.

๐Ÿพโ„๏ธ Winter is here, and so is Arthritis Awareness Month! ๐Ÿพโ„๏ธ

Hey pet parents! As the temperatures drop, our furry friends might start feeling a little extra creaky in their joints. Just like us, pets can suffer from arthritis, and the cold weather can make it even tougher for them to move around.

What is arthritis? Arthritis is a condition that causes inflammation in the joints, leading to pain, stiffness, and decreased mobility. It's common in older pets but can affect younger ones too.

Signs of arthritis in pets:
โ€ข Limping or favouring a limb
โ€ข Difficulty getting up or lying down
โ€ข Reluctance to climb stairs or jump onto furniture
โ€ข Decreased activity or interest in play
โ€ข Stiffness, especially after rest
โ€ข Irritability or changes in behaviour

But don't worry! Here are some tips to keep your pets feeling their best this winter:

๏ƒ˜ Keep them cosy: Make sure they have a warm and comfortable bed.
๏ƒ˜ Gentle exercise: Short, frequent walks can help keep those joints moving without overdoing it.
๏ƒ˜ Healthy diet: Good nutrition is key! Talk to us about the best food for joint health.
๏ƒ˜ Supplements & Meds: We can recommend the right supplements and medications to ease their discomfort.

And donโ€™t forget, we are here to help. Schedule an appointment with us to discuss how we can help your pet manage arthritis and stay happy all season long.

Ripleyโ€™s Journey and the new technology helping aid in the battle against cancer ๐Ÿซถ๐Ÿ’ž

We would like everyone to meet the wonder dog that is Ripley. She is a five-and-a-half-year-old Bernese Mountain dog who has been battling lymphoma since May 2023.

Ripley was in for a routine injection and check up when Dr Quyen noticed enlarged lymph nodes and an abdominal mass and recommended further work up. With ultrasound and biopsies it was found that Ripley had lymphoma.

Ripley underwent chemo for several months finishing up the first round in October 2023. Ripley had been in remission for around 5 months when we found the cancer had come back.

Which brings us to March 2024. We have started another round of chemo for Ripley and it was suggested by a specialist that we could look at adding *Immunotherapy* to her treatment plan.

So, a bit more about immunotherapy. Immunotherapy is a form of treatment that takes a sample from the patientโ€™s cancer and through a series of steps performed in clinic using a specialised kit helps break down the cells to then be injected back into the patient to stimulate the immune system to help fight the cancer.

Currently to our knowledge we are only one of several clinics in Australia to have provided this treatment option. Ripley is our first patient to be using this combined treatment plan and we hope to be able to use this in the future to help many more patients.

The aim of using immunotherapy alongside chemotherapy is to hopefully gain a better prognosis and outcome for pets suffering from cancer. Unfortunately, as we all know there is no promises when dealing with the big C but some studies have shown promising results in other countries and in other uses so we hope it helps not only Ripley but any other patients we can offer it to in the future.

Ripley is still undergoing her second course of chemo and the immunotherapy but so far, we are happy to say she is doing well and we will be sure to give everyone an update in the coming months on how she progresses with the immunotherapy and chemotherapy. ๐Ÿ’—๐Ÿ’—

Have you noticed your pet scooting or excessively licking their rear end? Maybe even smell a rotten fishy smell coming from them and showing signs of discomfort, it could be a sign that their a**l sacs need attention.

What exactly are a**l sacs? A**l sacs, commonly referred to as a**l glands, are small glands located on either side of your pet's a**s and are responsible for secreting a smelly fluid that helps them mark their territory and communicate with other animals. Normally, these glands empty naturally when your pet defecates, but sometimes they can become blocked or impacted, leading to discomfort and potential complications.

The signs of a**l gland issues can vary from scooting and licking to more severe symptoms like swelling, redness, or even abscess formation. It's essential not to ignore these signs, as untreated a**l gland problems can lead to pain, infection, and even more serious health issues for your furry companion.

But fret not! Our dedicated team at Ringwood East Vetcare is here to help. With our expertise and compassionate care, we can provide relief for your pet and address any a**l gland issues they may be experiencing.

During your pet's visit, we'll take the time to discuss their symptoms, perform a thorough examination, and recommend a tailored treatment plan to alleviate their discomfort. Whether it's a simple gland expression or more extensive care, we'll work closely with you to ensure the best possible outcome for your furry friend.

Some ways as pet parents you can assist in managing your pet's a**l gland issues are:
โ€ข Dietary Fiber: Ensure your pet's diet includes adequate fiber to promote regular bowel movements, which can help naturally empty the a**l glands.
โ€ข Observation: Monitor your pet for signs of a**l gland issues, such as scooting, licking, or discomfort, and seek veterinary attention promptly if any symptoms arise
โ€ข A**l Gland Expressions: Learn how to perform gentle a**l gland expressions at home under the guidance of your veterinarian, if recommended. However, it's essential to be cautious and seek professional guidance to avoid injury or discomfort to your pet.
โ€ข Follow Veterinary Recommendations: Follow your veterinarian's recommendations for treatment and follow-up care, including any medications or preventive measures prescribed.

Don't let a**l gland issues dampen your pet's spirits. Schedule an appointment with us today and let's keep those tails wagging happily again! Your pet's comfort and well-being are our top priorities. ๐Ÿพ ๐Ÿซถ๐Ÿ‘จโ€โš•๏ธ๐Ÿ•๐Ÿฉ๐Ÿฆฎ๐Ÿ•โ€๐Ÿฆบโค๏ธ

Understanding and Overcoming Canine Anxiety: A Guide for Pet Parents

๐Ÿพ๐ŸŒŸ Attention Pet Parents! ๐ŸŒŸ๐Ÿพ
Does your furry friend get nervous during thunderstorms, fireworks, or when left alone? ๐ŸŒฉ๏ธ๐ŸŽ†
Separation anxiety and fear of loud noises are common issues for our canine companions. But fear not! Your pals at Ringwood East Vetcare are here to help!

At Ringwood East Vetcare, we believe that every wag of a tail and every joyful bark is a testament to the deep bond between humans and their canine companions. However, we also recognize that just like humans, our furry friends can experience anxiety and fear, which can significantly impact their well-being and quality of life.

Dog anxiety is a complex and multifaceted issue that manifests in various forms, including separation anxiety, noise phobia, and generalised anxiety. It can stem from a range of factors, including genetics, past experiences, lack of socialisation, or even medical conditions. As caring pet parents, it's essential to recognise the signs and symptoms of anxiety in our canine friends so that we can provide them with the support and assistance they need to thrive.

๐Ÿ” Recognising the Signs of Canine Anxiety:
โ€ข Excessive Panting
โ€ข Licking paws compulsively- to the point of change in colour or hair loss
โ€ข Pacing or Restlessness
โ€ข Trembling or Shaking
โ€ข Cowering with tail tucked, whale eye and lip licking
โ€ข Excessive Barking or Whining
โ€ข Destructive Behaviours (chewing furniture, doors, etc.)
โ€ข Indoor Toileting Mishaps
โ€ข Aggression- whether towards other humans or animals

If you notice any of these behaviours in your furry friend, don't fret! There are plenty of proactive steps you can take to help alleviate their anxiety and improve their overall wellbeing.

๐Ÿ› ๏ธ Tips for Soothing Anxious Dogs:
1) Establish Routine: Dogs thrive on predictability, so establishing a consistent daily routine can help reduce their anxiety levels.
2) Create a Safe Haven: Designate a quiet, comfortable space where your dog can retreat when feeling overwhelmed.
3) Enrichment: Mental and physical stimulation. Regular exercise and engaging activities can help channel your dog's energy and reduce stress. Give them a stimulating toy such as Kongs, or hide treats around your yard for them to find, etc.
4) Positive Reinforcement: Use positive reinforcement techniques to reward calm, relaxed behaviour and encourage confidence.
5) Desensitisation Training: Gradually expose your pup to triggering sounds in a controlled environment.
6) Calming Aids: Consider using pheromone diffusers, calming sprays, or anxiety wraps to provide comfort.
7) Advocate for your dogsโ€™ boundaries: If your dog does not like anyone patting him or having other animals near him, let others know.
8) Seek Professional Help: If your dog's anxiety persists or escalates, don't hesitate to seek guidance from veterinary professionals or animal behaviorists.

At Ringwood East Vetcare, we're dedicated to supporting you and your furry family members every step of the way. Our team of compassionate veterinarians and nurses are here to provide care and guidance for you and your companion.

Together, let's create a world where every dog feels safe, loved, and understood. Reach out to us today to learn more about our services or to schedule a consultation. Your furry friend's happiness and well-being are our top priorities.

๐Ÿพ๐ŸŽ‰ Today, we're celebrating our unsung heroes โ€“ the compassionate souls who dedicate their lives to the well-being of our furry friends. It's Vet Appreciation Day! ๐ŸŽ‰๐Ÿพ

Let's take a moment to honour the incredible veterinarians who work tirelessly to ensure the health and happiness of our beloved pets. From routine check-ups to life-saving surgeries, they are there every step of the way, providing expert care and unwavering support.

But it's not just about treating illnesses or administering vaccinations โ€“ it's about the empathy they show, the bonds they forge with both animals and their human companions, and the countless lives they touch each and every day.

To all the veterinarians out there: thank you for your dedication, your passion, and your tireless efforts. Thank you for being the voice for those who cannot speak, the healers of the sick, and the comforters in times of need.

To our two amazing veterinarians at Ringwood East Vetcare- Boss man Dr Quyen and Ninja Dr Jeffry- thank you for not only being the best vets but for also being amazing humans to work with.

Today, let's show our appreciation for these amazing individuals. Whether it's a simple thank you, a heartfelt note, or a small gesture of kindness, let's make sure they know just how much they mean to us and our furry family members.

๐Ÿฐ Happy Easter!!! ๐Ÿซ

The Ringwood East Vetcare team would like to wish you a Happy Easter. We hope you have a wonderful day with family and friends.

Please remember to watch out for your pets and make sure they don't eat any Easter treats. If they have or you are not sure, please contact an emergency vet clinic and ask for advice.

Stay safe!

25/03/2024

๐ŸฐComing up to Easter there are a lot of delicious chocolate Easter eggs and other Easter treats around. While they are very delicious and only bad for our figures and that diet I swear I will start next week, they can be toxic to our beloved furry family members.๐Ÿˆ๐Ÿ•โ€๐Ÿฆบ

While youโ€™re keeping that hot cross bun for a delicious breakfast or after dinner dessert, your gluttonous fur baby has plans of their own for that delicious snack. Don't think they haven't been eyeing off the chocolate covered sultanas or the yummy looking Cadbury chocolate easter eggs. They, just like us, can't resist an Easter treat.๐Ÿซ๐Ÿ˜บ

If your furry family member does happen to ingest chocolate, hot cross buns, or macadamia nuts, etc., please contact your vet or the emergency clinic for advice. ๐Ÿฅผ๐Ÿš‘๐Ÿฅ๐Ÿช๐Ÿฉบ

Your pet may not show outward signs of toxicity immediately from ingesting these foods, however with high enough doses of chocolate and macadamia nuts they can pose threats to their neurological system, and sultanas can cause kidney failure.

Did you know that dogs and cats can save lives by donating blood too.

Just like with humans, sometimes our furry loved ones need a lifesaving blood transfusion. Which is what happened with beautiful Lea last Thursday, who came in to have a chemo treatment done. Her owners said that the day before she became flat. Upon doing her blood test that we always do before doing a chemo treatment, we found that Lea was moderately anaemic. Anaemia is where there are not enough red blood cells in the blood. Leaโ€™s body was not able to regenerate new red blood cells as quickly as she was losing them. Which resulted in her needing a blood transfusion to save her life. ๐Ÿฉธ

In comes Kodah, who is nurse Courtney's handsome fur baby. He was a brave boy and donated his blood to Lea. With his blood we were able to replenish Leaโ€™s red blood cells while keeping a close eye on her.๐Ÿ’›
The next day Lea was sitting up and back to her happy bright beautiful self. We have thankfully been able to continue on with Leaโ€™s chemotherapy. ๐Ÿ’‰๐Ÿฉท

Did you know that dogs, just like humans, have different blood types. However, for their first blood transfusion dogs do not need to be blood typed. But if they were to have a second transfusion both pets would need to be a blood match.๐Ÿฆฎ๐Ÿฉ
