We are still buzzing from our first-ever Rossini's Petite Solennelle performance with vocal superstars Jacqueline Porter, Sally-Anne Russell, Jiacheng Ding and Pelham Andrews. William Schmidt, our principal accompanist, was amazing and in perfect sync with Konrad Olszewski, the legendary accordionist Steve Grant did the rest. And thanks to our lovely audience, we couldn't do it without you!
We are still coming down from a post concert “high” after our performance of Rossini’s “Petite Messe Solennelle”. An enthusiastic response was received from our wonderful audience - with 3 curtain calls and standing ovations!
We were all left mesmerised by the amazing work of our 4 talented vocal soloists as well as the fabulous instrumental ensemble.
Special thanks to our marvellous Music Director, Mario Dobernig, for his energetic leadership and for introducing us to such a fun work!

Joining William Schmidt in Victoria Chorale’s Art of Sound Ensemble performance this Saturday will be pianist Konrad Olszewski (below left) and accordionist, Steve Grant (below right).
Konrad is in great demand as an accompanist, performer, repetiteur and teacher. He completed his Master of Music degree with a postgraduate scholarship at the University of Melbourne in 2012, studying with Glenn Riddle. He has won many awards since and is regularly invited to perform recitals around Australia. Konrad also enjoys composing and performing jazz and popular works.
Steve has a diverse and varied range of musical experience, encompassing a variety of different musical instruments and styles - traditional and contemporary, acoustic and electric, local and global. He took up accordion in his late teens, and has been in great demand ever since, applying his skills to country music, blues, jazz, Brazilian, European and Irish music.

Highly credentialled , William has performed extensively as soloist and in ensembles throughout Australia. He is a teaching associate at Monash University and a much sought after accompanist for recitals, music festivals, auditions and music exams.
William has won numerous national and state music awards and we are thrilled that he brings his brilliant musical virtuosity to our performance of Petite Messe Solennelle.
Petite Messe Solennelle was one of Rossini’s last compositions before his death in 1868 and was first performed with just 12 singers at one of his soirees.

Pelham Andrews trained in the UK, Germany and Australia and has been a principal artist for Opera Australia, State Opera South Australia, Victorian Opera, English National Opera, Auckland Philharmonia, the Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide, Queensland and Tasmanian Symphony Orchestras, and numerous other ensembles.
Recent performing highlights include Bass soloist in Verdi’s Requiem with the Zurich Ballet for Adelaide Festival, Banquo (Macbeth), Bartolo (Marriage of Figaro) and Judd/Bonner (Voss) for State Opera South Australia, Don Fernando (Fidelio) for Sydney Symphony, Faure’s Requiem for Adelaide Symphony, new chamber-work As the Universe Unfolds by Glyn Lehmann, and his roles in Watershed – The Death of Dr Duncan for its acclaimed 2022 Adelaide Festival premiere and its 2024 staging by Opera Australia.

Following our last two sell-out concerts, we are very excited to announce that Victoria Chorale’s next concert on September 14 will be Rossini’s unique and melodious Petite Messe Solennelle at James Tatoulis Auditorium, MLC, 207 Barkers road Kew at 5pm.
Conducted by our acclaimed conductor Mario Dobernig and accompanied by two pianos and harmonium/accordion (the composer’s original instrumentation), Victoria Chorale will be joined by four outstanding soloists: Jacqueline Porter, soprano; Sally-Anne Russell, mezzo soprano; Jiacheng Ding tenor; Pelham Andrews, bass.

Jiacheng Ding tenor, moved to Australia to commence postgraduate study at the Elder Conservatorium and in 2018 he graduated with High Distinction from The University of Adelaide with a Masters of Music.
For the 2024 season, his performances include The Nightingale for Adelaide Festival, Handel’s Messiah and Mozart’s Requiem for Adelaide Harmony Choir, Rossini’s Petite Messe Solennelle for Victoria Chorale, Leonard Bernstein’s Candide, Mozart’s Cossi Fan Tutte and Normanno in Donizetti’s Lucia di Lammermoor for State Opera South Australia.
Rossini’s Petite Messe Solennelle has been performed regularly around the world for more than 150 years and, this year, Victoria Chorale will be performing this work on Saturday 14 September, 5pm at James Tatoulis Auditorium, MLC.
Our music director, Mario Dobernig, will conduct this performance and one of our favourites, Sally-Anne Russell, mezzo soprano, will join us and our other soloists: Jacqueline Porter, soprano, Jiacheng Ding, Tenor, and Pelham Andrews, Bass.

One of Australia’s finest mezzo sopranos, Sally-Anne has over 80 operatic roles in her repertoire, has sung in 25 countries, and performs with all the major Australian and New Zealand symphony orchestras, opera companies, choral societies and festivals. Sally-Anne has also been a regular guest with the Australian Chamber Orchestra, Musica Viva, and the Australian String Quartet, She has over 40 recordings on ABC Classics, Chandos, Move and Decca labels.
Rossini’s Petite Messe Solennelle blends operatic brilliance with traditional Mass forms, resulting in glorious melodies, wonderful choral work and some rhythms that are almost jazzy.

Jacqueline holds an honours degree in Music Performance and a Bachelor of Arts (Italian) from the University of Melbourne. Equally at home on the operatic stage and the concert platform, Jacqueline appears regularly with Australia’s major symphony orchestras and choral societies.
Performance highlights include Peer Gynt (Grieg), The Ugly Duckling (Prokofiev) and Bachianas Brasileiras no. 5 (Villa Lobos) with Sydney Symphony Orchestra; Faure’s Requiem, Mahler’s Symphony No. 4, Mozart’s Requiem and Rachmaninoff’s The Bells with Melbourne Symphony Orchestra etc.
Operatic roles include Susanna (The Marriage of Figaro); Despina (Così fan tutte); Princess (Sleeping Beauty); Drusilla (L’incoronazione di Poppea) for Victorian Opera and Gretel (Hansel and Gretel) for State Opera of South Australia.

Conducted by Victoria Chorale’s renowned Musical Director, Mario Dobernig, and featuring brilliant mezzo-soprano Sally-Anne Russell, with Victoria Chorale’s choristers and the Art of Sound orchestra, this powerful ode to peace is being performed for one night only.
