Red Stitch: The Actors' Theatre
Australia’s leading ensemble theatre company, premiering contemporary works since 2002.
Join us for our final production of 2024: Your Name Means Dream by José Rivera, directed by Kat Henry and starring Caroline Lee and Lucy Ansell.
“Shine(s) a light on the mysteries of the human heart and the human-generated machine...” - Broadway Worlds
Aislin is getting older in a world that is becoming increasingly unfamiliar to her. Her caregiver Stacy is perfectly toned, ageless, and utterly in control. She’s also a robot. While Aislin suffers the inevitable indignities of being human, Stacy wonders what she’s missing out on.
“Five ladies quit on me in the last year. So they send the machines. The fu***ng, soulless, plastic f**kin’ machines.”
Oscar nominee and Obie-winning José Rivera (The
Motorcycle Diaries) examines how we live, die, and form our sense of self in a world where the line between humanity and machine is blurring by the second.
26 Oct - 24 November. Tickets on sale NOW.

"Director Gary Abrahams imbues the telling with expressive physicality on the confined Red Stitch stage, ringing all the story’s changes, its light and shade, in movement and stillness, so that we are swept along with Effie’s tale, carried from a joke to wonder to tenderness and back again.... Ms Clarke has us leaning forward... hanging on her every word." - Stage Whispers.★★★★1/2 - THE AGE

"This is an astounding performance well championed by Abrahams. One that would surely please the cruel and unusual Greek pantheon on Mount Olympus, if only they'd deign to care. As for us mere mortals, it's an unmissable moment of Melbourne theatre and a reminder that in this, of all years, we must listen to ( and learn from) women, even when to do so is painful." - Timeout Melbourne, 2021.Don't miss out. Listen to this utterly fascinating interview with playwright Gary Owen (Romeo and Julie, Iphigenia in Splott) on ABC's Stage Show with Michael Cathcart.
"In the original myth, Iphigenia is asked to make a sacrifice for seemingly "the good of the state", in that she's supposed to be sacrificed so that and the greek war fleet can reach Troy and pursue this war against Troy, and the thing that I started to think about, that at the time, in the early 2010's in Britain, there was a sort of austerity, an agenda from the government, and the slogan that we were told was "we're all in it together" that we're all bearing the burden of cuts together to get to a better future. But obviously when you slash public services, that impacts more on poorer people than richer people.... So writing Iphigenia in Splott was just a way of digging into that and asking "are we all in it together? or are some having to bear the burden of cuts more heavily than others?"
Our return season of Iphigenia in Splott runs from the 3 -22 September at Red Stitch, tickets are on sale NOW.

"This is a twist on the classic play with a gritty reality that underpins each scene. Damon Baudin’s Romy and Shontane Farmer’s Julie have an undeniable chemistry (“If I was flirting with you, you wouldn’t know”), their budding romance constantly interrupted by the forces that surround them – a baby, an alcoholic mother (an impactful and comedic performance by Belinda McClory as Barb), and a looming spot at Cambridge." - What's The Show★★★★- Limelight★★★★- What's The Show

"Romeo & Julie is an intense, dramatic, engaging, entertaining and thought-provoking work from Welsh playwright Gary Owen (Iphigenia in Splott). Humour and pathos … joy and heartbreak go hand in glove, as it sets up the ultimate moral dilemma, with lives and futures on the line." - The Blurb

"Unlike Shakespeare’s original, where death and family feuds separate the lovers, this adaptation offers a more subdued, realistic tragedy. Owen’s script explores two potential futures: a life confined to Cardiff’s grim streets or the boundless possibilities of the universe — unfortunately the latter is reserved for a very select few." And so the reviews begin! Don't miss this incredible new play from the writer of Iphigenia in Splott.
