How do you come out of 'fight or flight' mode?
It depends...its different for everyone...but if you don't try, it's not sustainable for anyone to remain in chronic stress long term (and stay healthy). Our bodies will always adapt to the stressors we put to it. For better or worse.
Staying in a constant state of stress causes a heightened brain protection response which means our brains will always be on the lookout for danger, both within our bodies or our environment. In this state, the logical decision making part of our brain is dulled down as we prioritise safety. Fear and emotion driven behaviour takes over.
Additionally, where pain is involved, the brain increases 'pain checking' messages back and forth, which then can cause an increase in those message pathways, and a release of an inflammatory response. Inflammation in the body can show up in all sorts of ways and actual physical issues. And then the cycle of pain, stress and inflammation continues. It can be exhausting.
You may have the strength and motivation to go flat out 🚴or ride up a hill 🚡 while using 'good stress', but just as you need to slow down if you're going too fast down a hill, you need to 'find your brakes'. 🚦
You simply can't maintain the same high speed and high energy all the time.
To come out of a chronic fight/flight stress response and return to a regulated state allows you to make better choices and decisions. Your body is able to function again as it should, breathing, digesting, healing, restoring. Your logical and clear-thinking brain can come back online.
What helps you 'come down'?
Things like breathing slowly, sitting or walking in nature, any slow and mindful activity, a warm bathπŸ›€, a massageπŸ™Œ, cross stitch or knitting, yoga 🧘, drawing or colouring in, time with a pet 🐱, etc..
The list is endless, and up to you. 🌿
Whatever you choose, the intention is to slow your heart rate down, and allow your lungs to expand to their full potential as you breathe. Your amazing body will do the rest. Give it a chance, your body is actually always aiming for balance.
Learn to recognise when you're in a fight or flight stress state, 'find your brakes' and slow down, just long enough for your system to restore and reboot. πŸ₯°

Kate comes with a wealth of experience and is a member of the Australian Counselling Association with a bachelor’s degree in speech pathology, graduate diploma in counselling and diploma in coaching. Kate works with people over 18, especially those who lack confidence, feel overwhelmed by life, or have experienced bullying and want to be larger versions of themselves.

Good morning, and hope you're enjoying mid Spring! Still wearing masks in the clinic as a healthcare service with some vulnerable clients, but so much more to smile about as the community all get moving around again, sporting, travelling and socialising.
An update since it's been a while between posting..
We've had a minor renovation to transform our massage chair room, and can now welcome Janet Maxwell, a lovely and experienced Clinical Psychologist, joining us 3-4 days a week.
The massage chair is still available and can be booked online if you need 30mins to destress without interruption for $20.
Simone, Joanne and I are available for myotherapy, and we are looking forward to bringing in an additional myotherapist (or two!) over the next couple of months. As you may know we operate as separate businesses within the clinic, so you'll notice that you need to use separate links via our website when checking online for our availability.
Its been great to have Yolande back in the clinic this year, increasing her availability with her transformational reflexology treatments. Text to book.
With 11 weeks until Christmas, and the better weather bringing on more activities, you may like to plan ahead for your next appointments.
