We got brewing our Beers of the Burbs beer at Molly Rose Brewing last night! Our delicious drop is representing St Kilda East and going up against a bunch of local legends, but we are confident this brew will be taking out the Grand Final!

Keen for another Ale Stars friends? Well come along this month to chop it up with ’s Head Brewer and Co-Founder Richard Watkins! Rich is a twice crowned Australian Champion Brewer who has been brewing professionally for a couple of decades. He sharpened his skills brewing great beers at Canberra’s iconic before starting his own thing with BentSpoke. Over the past 14 years Rich has created thousands of incredible beers and scored plenty of AIBAs and International Brewing Awards along the way. It’s going down Tuesday August 20th at 7pm. This month at Ale Stars come and say hi to Managing Director Greg Croke who is teaming up with Stomping Grounds Head Brewer Ashur Hall to talk about some incredible beers they have collaborated on.

Ellerslie Hop Estate is the largest Australian-owned independent hop company. Not only does it have an amazing heritage but the business is a family affair, having been in the Croke family for 90 years now. Greg’s grandfather Thomas William Croke founded Ellerslie in 1932 and Greg’s father Desmond Charles still acts as chairman.

Ellerslie are the proud agents for the Coopers Australian Malt range, as well as for the Lallemand Yeast and Ab Vickers Range. Not even a devastating fire in 2018 (where the business lost its major processing equipment, sheds and the majority of that years crop) has managed to slow down this family of hop-making legends.

Joining Greg will be Head Brewer, Ashur Hall. Ashur has had a stellar career, going from home brewing as a broke University student to Beer & Brewer’s 2022 Brewer of the Year, creating consistently delicious beers and leading a team of talented beermakers down in Collingwood. He also is a proud supporter of Ellerslie!

This month we welcome Co-Founder and Head Brewer of Valhalla Brewing & Taproom (VIC) Scott Hunt. Scott decided to turn a passion for home brewing during his Uni days into something more in 2016 when he and his wife Ange launched Valhalla’s first beer, ‘Obsidian’.

Supported by family and friends, Obsidian grew in popularity as did the growing range of Valhalla beers. In 2021 Valhalla’s OG beer Obsidian was awarded the AIBA award for Best Stout/Porter and Valhalla crowned Champion Gypsy Brewer.

In 2018 he opened Valhalla Taproom in Geelong. The Valhalla Taproom was designed to be an intimate space for people to gather and celebrate life’s passions. A place where our punters can leave the world behind and enjoy great beer, music and food. Fast forward to today and you'll now find Valhalla Brewhall in North Geelong at the historic Federal Mills. The 1500 litre, state-of-the-art automated brewhouse has the capacity to brew up to 500,000 litres per year, and the 200 capacity Brewhall is one of the most unique venues in all Geelong.

About Holgate:

The Holgate Brewery story began twenty five years ago when Paul and his wife Natasha started a small craft brewery in their local town of Woodend, on the doorstep of the beautiful Macedon and Daylesford regions. In those days, the brewing happened in Paul’s shed, and the whole family pitched in to bottle and pack.

Much has happened for the brewery and brewing industry in the 25 years since so this promises to be to a very special conversation with Paul while enjoying some of his award-winning beers.
