Apple Polysaccharides Boost Brain Health and Combat Aging Through Gut Microbiota

A recent Nature study found that apple polysaccharides (AP) can improve cognitive function and reduce intestinal aging in mice. AP enhanced memory and learning abilities, increased beneficial gut bacteria, and decreased harmful bacteria. It also reduced inflammation and oxidative stress, improved intestinal barrier function, and prevented neuronal damage. This suggests that AP could be a potential treatment to delay aging-related cognitive decline and intestinal issues by modulating the microbiota-gut-brain axis.

Psoriasis Severity Linked to Imbalance in Skin Microbiome

A new study published in Lancet has revealed a connection between the severity of psoriasis and imbalances in the skin microbiome. Researchers found that patients with severe psoriasis have a disrupted skin microbiome, characterised by decreased diversity and an overabundance of certain harmful bacteria. This imbalance, known as dysbiosis, can worsen inflammation and exacerbate psoriasis symptoms. The findings suggest that targeting the skin microbiome through treatments like probiotics could potentially alleviate psoriasis symptoms and improve patient outcomes. Further research is needed to explore these therapeutic approaches.

‘Completely groundbreaking’: Parkinson’s research will look at gut microbiome link

Australian researchers received $4 million in grants to explore how the gut microbiome affects Parkinson’s disease. Their goal is to develop drugs targeting gut bacteria to slow or stop disease progression. Emerging evidence suggests a link between gut health and Parkinson’s, with imbalances in gut microbes contributing to inflammation and neuron damage. The team will study human patients and disease models, aiming to create treatments that restore gut microbial balance and activate protective mechanisms, potentially improving the quality of life for those with Parkinson’s.

Poo transplant researchers are trying to manufacture the 'ultimate' gut microbiome

The article from ABC News discusses the use of f***l microbiota transplants (FMTs) for treating gut-related health issues, specifically infections caused by the bacterium Clostridioides difficile. Matthew Walker-Brown, a regular stool donor, contributes to this treatment, which has proven effective in cases where antibiotics fail. Researchers are now looking to advance this treatment by creating lab-grown gut microbiomes, which wouldn't require human donors. This new method aims to replicate and potentially enhance the diverse microbial environment of the colon. While faecal transplants have shown promise in treating other conditions like cancer therapy side effects, the development of these lab-grown microbiomes could lead to more targeted and efficient treatments for a variety of gut health issues.

Comparison of the in-vitro effect of five prebiotics with different structure on gut microbiome and metabolome

This study aimed to compare the effects of five different prebiotics—sodium alginate (SA), galactooligosaccharides (GOS), lactulose (LC), polydextrose (PDX), and inulin (IN)—on the gut microbiome and metabolome using an in vitro human gut fermentation model. The prebiotics varied in structure and were effective in promoting beneficial bacteria, such as Bifidobacterium, Enterococcus, and Ruminococcaceae in the GOS group, and Parabacteroides and Phascolarctobacterium in the PDX group. They also increased the production of short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), particularly butyric acid, which was most significantly increased by SA due to its large molecular weight and high content of ManA.

The study found that most prebiotics affected carbohydrate metabolism, amino acid metabolism, and lipid metabolism pathways. The metabolic pathways affected were similar between LC and GOS, which have the smallest molecular weight, and IN and PDX, which have similar molecular weights and monosaccharide compositions, were strongly associated with energy metabolism pathways.

This research could help in the application and development of prebiotics in the food industry by providing insights into how the structure of prebiotics influences their effects on gut health.

Gut bacteria diversity linked to body weight, athletes show healthier profiles

A recent systematic review has shed light on the connection between the diversity of gut microbiome and body weight, revealing that athletes exhibit healthier gut profiles compared to non-athletes. The study, which compiled data from numerous articles, emphasised the significant role that millions of gut microorganisms, especially bacteria, play in maintaining normal body functions. These findings underscore that gut microbiome diversity is linked to better functionality and a decreased likelihood of dysbiosis, which is a microbial imbalance that can disrupt gut function.

Interestingly, the review found that obese individuals tend to have a different gut microbiome composition than their normal-weight or athletic counterparts, with athletes showing more beneficial gut bacteria profiles. For example, athletes and normal-weight individuals had higher levels of Bacteroidetes, associated with muscle and lean body mass, and lower levels of Firmicutes, which were more abundant in obese individuals and correlated with higher body mass index (BMI), fat mass, and waist circumference.

These insights highlight the gut microbiome's profound impact on body composition and weight, suggesting that managing gut health could be a pivotal aspect of maintaining a healthy weight and physical fitness. However, the review also noted limitations, including the need for further research to fully understand the cause-effect relationship between gut microbiome composition and body weight.

Effects of bathing in different hot spring types on Japanese gut microbiota

A study published in " Nature Scientific Reports" investigates the effects of bathing in different types of hot springs on the gut microbiota of healthy individuals. The research was conducted in Beppu, Japan, known for its diverse range of hot springs, and involved 136 healthy Japanese adults who bathed in the same hot spring for seven consecutive days. The study focused on five types of hot springs: simple, chloride, bicarbonate, sulfur, and sulfate.

Faecal samples were collected from the participants before and after the 7-day bathing period, and the relative abundance of the gut microbiota was determined using 16S rRNA sequencing. The results showed that bathing in different hot springs affected the gut microbiota in various ways. Notably, the relative abundance of Bifidobacterium bifidum increased significantly after bathing in the bicarbonate spring. Other significant increases in gut microbiota were observed after bathing in simple, bicarbonate, and sulfur springs.

These findings suggest that bathing in different types of hot springs can have distinct effects on the gut microbiota in healthy individuals. The study contributes to the understanding of how environmental factors, such as hot spring bathing, can influence the composition of the gut microbiome.

Fermented Foods: Harnessing Their Potential to Modulate The Microbiota-Gut-Brain Axis for Mental Health

A review published in "Neuroscience & Biobehavioral Reviews" explores the potential of fermented foods in modulating the microbiota-gut-brain axis for mental health. Fermented foods, which contain beneficial microbes, microbial metabolites, and other bioactives, are being increasingly recognised for their ability to influence mental health through the gut-brain axis.

Key points from the review include:

Affordable Dietary Intervention: Fermented foods offer an accessible strategy for dietary intervention, potentially impacting mental health.

Neuroactive Potential: These foods comprise microbes and molecules with neuroactive potential, influencing various communication pathways of the gut-brain axis.

Diversity in Microbial Community: Fermented foods are diverse in terms of the raw materials used, the type of fermentation employed, and the microbial communities they host.

Influence on Gut Microbiota: The review summarises the potential of fermented foods to shape the composition of the gut microbiota and their impact on gut-to-brain communication, including the immune system

Challenges in Human Studies: The review identifies knowledge gaps and challenges in designing human studies to investigate the mental health-promoting potential of individual fermented foods or components. It suggests long-term intervention with accurate measurement of fermented food intake is critical.

Therapeutic Merit: The review also proposes solutions to advance understanding of the therapeutic merit of fermented foods in modulating the microbiota-gut-brain axis.

This review highlights the importance of considering fermented foods as a whole food microbiota-modulating intervention for mental health, emphasising the need for well-designed studies to fully understand their therapeutic potential.
