๐Ÿ’œ Know the signs - Donโ€™t watch and wait.

Some examples include, changes in physical wellbeing, mood, personality, repetitive behaviours around food/meals, diet cycling, food preoccupation, body checking, social withdrawal and more.

๐Ÿ’œ Seek support.

Whether that be seeking support from a loved one or a credentialled treatment team, peer support, group support, or carer support.

Support could also mean healthcare providers seeking supervision, further education/ upskilling or knowing where to refer on to.

๐Ÿ’œ Helpful conversations.

Consider some of the following ways to help move towards more helpful conversations.

The next time you go to compliment someone, consider a non-appearance based one. How does that person make you feel or why do you enjoy their company?

Neutral language around food such as โ€œfood is foodโ€, โ€œall food has a place in my lifeโ€, โ€œfood is both nourishing and enjoyableโ€.

Non-judgemental โ€œI statementsโ€ when raising concern โ€œI have noticed you havenโ€™t been yourself latelyโ€, โ€œI am here if you need to talkโ€ or โ€œHow can I help?โ€

Calling out stigma, bias and discrimination.

Advocating for inclusive practice.

๐Ÿ’œ Information is key.

When seeking information or resources, ensure you are getting these from a reputable source.

Consider information hubs like Eating Disorders Victoria (EDV), Butterfly Foundation, Eating Disorders Family Australia (EDFA), National Eating Disorder Collaboration (NEDC), Australia & New Zealand Academy for Eating Disorders (ANZAED), Size Inclusive Care Australia.

Sadly, in our society, the idealization of thinness and the promotion of unrealistic standards of perfection and sameness continue to perpetuate pervasive weight stigma and fat phobia, also known as fat shaming or weight bias.

Weight stigma and discrimination can have lifelong negative consequences on an individual's mental health, body image, and their relationship with food and exercise. Like other forms of discrimination, fat phobia has serious implications. Experiences of fat phobia often lead individuals to internalize the opinions of others, causing shame and anxiety, and a desire to seek an unrealistic body in order to feel safer. This can lead to extreme efforts to alter ones shape and size, ignoring their health and well-being. This only exacerbates feelings of insecurity, danger, and disconnection.

Not only is dieting a significant behavioral risk factor for the development of an eating disorder, but weight discrimination is also identified as a significant barrier to people accessing medical services and treatment. Recognizing and challenging fat phobia is paramount in promoting body peace, inclusivity, and the fair treatment of all individuals, regardless of their body size or weight.

Imagine a world where everyone feels respected, safe, and welcome. Where individuals are recognized for their unique needs, and the size and shape of their body does not determine the level of care they receive. The time to act is now.

Let us continue to shift the dialogue and change practice so that equitable spaces are available for everyone, regardless of their body type.

Don't miss the latest blog on our website by our superstar dietitian, Naina, discussing why Person Centred Psychology provides weight-inclusive care. https://pcpsychology.com.au/blog

Eating Disorders donโ€™t discriminate.
Any person of any age, weight/shape, gender, sexuality, cultural background and intellect can experience the horrors of an Eating Disorder.

Eating Disorders are a serious illness that stems from a combination of biological and psychosocial factors, which can be associated with serious medical complications.

Even as awareness and education increases, 25% of Australians believe Eating Disorders are a choice and that people could stop their behaviour if they really wanted to. This misconception is so far from reality. Eating Disorder recovery is a journey that takes time, strength, understanding and most importantly, support.

Letโ€™s continue to change the conversation and break the stigma. We all have a role to play, starting from today.

Contrary to popular belief, Eating Disorders are not rare. In fact, Eating Disorders are alarmingly prevalent, with more than 1 million Australians living with an eating disorder in any given year. Sadly, 25% or 1 in 4 of this population donโ€™t receive the treatment that they desperately need.

There are a number of factors that contribute to barriers people face when reaching out for support, some include:
- Knowing where and how to find safe and appropriate care by experienced clinicians.
- Ongoing weight stigma, whereby significant red flags consistently go unnoticed the more we pathologise fatness and idealise thinness.
- Stigmatisation of eating disorders contributing to the isolation, fear, judgement and minimisation of a persons experience with an eating disorder.
- Prevailing stereotyping of Eating Disorders with physical appearances and specific demographics.

Last week saw the release of the National Eating Disorder Strategy, that has combined the voices of those with lived experience, clinicians, researchers, community providers, public health experts and service development leaders to develop a roadmap towards more effective, equitable and coordinated systems of care.

Although some incredible strides are being developed for our future, we all have a role to play in making changes, starting from today.

Letโ€™s change continue to change the conversation and create spaces where people feel welcome, safe and supported.

๐ŸŽ‰๐ŸŒŸ Our brilliant psychologist, Sophie Yeung, took the stage at the Gold Coast this weekend, captivating the audience with groundbreaking insights.

๐Ÿ“š๐Ÿ” Sophie delved into her master's thesis, an extensive meta-analytic review that explored the fascinating realm of alexithymia as a potential transdiagnostic factor across depressive, anxiety, and eating disorders. Her talk was featured in the prestigious "Emerging Ideas in Research and Practice" section of the ANZAED conference.

๐Ÿ”ฌ๐Ÿค After meticulously analyzing 69 studies, Sophie's research brought to light some truly remarkable findings. She uncovered that specific sub-components of alexithymia exhibit transdiagnostic tendencies across these complex disorders. Moreover, the connection between the severity of alexithymia and symptoms of various disorders showed a promising transdiagnostic pattern.

๐Ÿ’ก๐Ÿ’ช What does this mean for the field? Sophie's work has immense clinical implications for both assessment and treatment strategies. The need for further exploration into transdiagnostic treatment for alexithymia is more evident than ever.

Let's applaud Sophie for her invaluable contribution to advancing our understanding of these interconnected mental health challenges. ๐Ÿ™Œ๐ŸŒˆ

Psychology offers a valuable framework for understanding and addressing children's emotional, cognitive, and behavioral needs, fostering positive development and emotional well-being.

Through evidence-based interventions, our team of psychologists can guide children in developing effective coping skills, improving communication, and managing challenges.

Moreover, by involving families in the therapeutic process, psychology strengthens familial bonds, equipping parents with tools to support their children's growth, and creating a nurturing environment that contributes to the children's overall flourishing.

๐ŸŒŸ Celebrating NAIDOC Week! ๐ŸŒŸ

As we honor and celebrate the rich history, diverse cultures, and incredible achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, we acknowledge that this is a time for reflection, learning, and unity.

At Person Centred Psychology, we recognize the invaluable contributions Indigenous Australians make to our society and our business community. We strive to foster an inclusive and respectful environment that acknowledges and respects the Traditional Owners of the land on which we operate.

NAIDOC Week reminds us of the importance of cultural awareness, reconciliation, and embracing the unique perspectives that First Nations people bring. It is an opportunity for us to come together, listen, and learn from each other's stories, wisdom, and experiences.

Let's stand together on this journey of reconciliation, recognizing that we are all on the path towards a more inclusive and equitable future. Happy NAIDOC Week!

16/06/2023

Letโ€™s stand together and support the well-being of men everywhere!

Did you know?
๐Ÿ”น Men are three times more likely to die by su***de than women. It's crucial that we create a safe space for men to open up about their struggles, seek help, and break the stigma associated with seeking support. Remember, reaching out is a sign of strength.๐Ÿค๐Ÿ’”

๐Ÿ”น Approximately 1 in 10 men will experience depression or anxiety in their lifetime. Let's normalize conversations about mental health, promote emotional well-being, and encourage men to prioritize self-care and seek professional help when needed. You don't have to face it alone. ๐ŸŒˆ๐Ÿ’ช

๐Ÿ”น Men's mental health is often affected by societal pressures and traditional masculinity norms. Let's challenge these expectations and embrace a more inclusive definition of strength. Real strength lies in vulnerability, empathy, and reaching out for support when needed. ๐Ÿ™Œ๐Ÿ’š

This Men's Mental Health Month, let's break down the barriers and prioritize the mental well-being of men. Together, we can create a supportive environment where men feel heard, understood, and empowered to seek the help they deserve. Remember, your mental health matters! ๐Ÿ’™
