your favourite bar fly and your favourite dive bar are teaming up to bring you a new monthly spoken word night on smith st ✨ kicking off on the 29th of august, bloodletting will be your new monthly fix of spoken word, poetry and mulled wine fuelled emotional outpourings.
bloodletting refers to the age old practice of withdrawing blood from a patient to remove toxins or to prevent illness and disease. as every bleeding heart writer knows, writing is this practice reincarnated; a purge, an outpouring, a salvation for souls carrying too much. bloodletting is a salve, an act of purification, it’s a chance to cleanse yourself of the ghosts echoing around in your heart and mind.
this night is open to all - if you have a piece you’re wanting to share, come along and we’ll add your name to the hat of writers hoping to speak (shoot us a message too) or just come along and have a listen. we’ve got mulled wine on offer for a candlelit night of community sharing, connection and sad girl energy. kicking off from 7pm upstairs on the 29th of august, come join us in holy purification 😈

Here’s tomorrow nights double feature film spectacular blurbs as presented by
-Cobweb (2023)
I’ll keep this blurb short because I really don’t want to spoil it, and not because the dark money PAC that funds this insta page stopped paying me by the word.
It’s been a real long time since a horror movie f**ked me up but this one got to me. I kept thinking I had the measure of it, I kept being wrong and ended up having no idea which way it was going to go, which is kind of weird for a movie with a plot.
Perfect for Halloween but.
Starring the cast and an incredibly divisive third act, I pinky swear that this will be the last movie with any merit I show for a while. At least until I can steal back my copy of B**b Avengers 4: the Deathening from the evidence locker.
-Dog Soldiers (2002)
This movie reminds me of that one time when my mate Deccas reckoned he was in a secret government program to hunt down werewolves, but it turns out he’d just been on the ice again and was biting the heads off rats behind the Coles at Northcote shopping center (the good Coles, not the s**t Coles).
Bless his heart.
For my money, the two greatest joys in life are laughing at the saddo neckbeards who pick apart movies for getting military stuff wrong, and scratching the beard on my neck while laughing at the Army guys in Dog Soldiers being s**t at doing Army. Because they’re so, so s**t at doing Army. This Halloween at Kent st, you too can enjoy one or both of those things as we watch the gunned-up werewolf madness of Dog Soldiers the way it was meant to be seen: on a biggish screen with audio thats like, ok.
Showcasing werewolves with a pretty squiffy understanding of their own lore, an even worse understanding of how anti-tank mines work (ngl, I’m probably going to yell) and that perennial staple of movie night: unlikable t***s being torn to shreds.
As always, movie night is always free because it’s sponsored by our lifelong partners: the s**t Coles at Northcote shopping center (not the good one)
“We’re not even worth stealing from!”
“Wow! It’s already been 3 months of Signals, featuring 7 spellbinding artists, 1 cassette launch and now 2 live albums released from our cute lil night! Big Thanks and shout out to all the artists and audiences who have helped make this night so special.
