Library Opening Hours Update 📣📚️

Slide 1:
Library Opening
Hours Update

Slide 2:
Students today are forced to balance their academic lives with part-time or full-time jobs due to the ongoing cost-of-living crisis. 55% of students in 2023 had to take on more employment hours just to be able to make ends meet.
This financial pressure makes it challenging to dedicate sufficient time to their studies, affecting their overall academic success.
Currently, students who work 9-5 jobs are only able to access the library for 6 hours. However, students who do not work are able to access the same spaces for almost 14 hours.
This disparity is unacceptable.

Slide 3:
24-hour study spaces are crucial in accommodating diverse schedules and the various commitments that students have so that they are able to study at their convenience.
They also provide a focused environment free from the distractions as well as access to resources like Wi-Fi, study materials, and collaborative spaces that enhances learning and productivity.
Monash University has the responsibility of ensuring that students have study spaces that foster a conducive learning environment, allowing them to fully engage with their coursework and achieve their academic goals

Slide 4:
We urge the Monash University to open Levels G and LG of Matheson Library 24/7. Doing so would provide all students, especially those who work, with the opportunity to study at times that suit their schedules.
We will continue to fight the University and we encourage you to take action by either signing the Open Letter in our bio or emailing the Matheson Library directly to express how these changes would positively impact your life and studies.
Your voice matters-let's make it heard.

Withdrawn Incomplete Changes 📣 If you have any questions about the updated policy, please don’t hesitate to reach out to: [email protected]

Slide 1:
Withdrawn Incomplete Changes. A student win!

Slide 2:
Many students face compassionate issues within their time at University and Monash’s policy should reflect that.

The existing process and criteria for awarding Withdrawn Incomplete (WI) grades is being replaced with a new process. This new process extends the special circumstances process used for remission of debt and fee refunds to also include a compassionate response.

This means that the standard existing Withdrawn grade (WDN) will become an automatic outcome of approved special circumstances applications for remission of debt and fee refunds, provided that the application was received within 10 working days of the results release date for the unit.

Slide 3:
Additionally, students who are unable to complete a rescheduled deferred assessment within 90 day time limit will be able to receive a Withdrawn grade (WDN).

This means that the WDN grade will not impact a student’s WAM or GPA and will be removed from the academic progress risk level calculation.

It is great to see the University listening to students and applying a compassionate approach to supporting students going through difficult circumstances. These changes will come into effect for Semester 2 2024.

Find the nearest all gender bathroom near you:
www.monash.edu/students/support/lgbtiqa/all-gender-toilets

Slide 1:
Bathrooms for ALL. The MSA is aware there have been reports of students questioning others’ rights to use gendered bathrooms from other students on campus. This behaviour is unacceptable. The MSA affirms that everyone has the right to use safe and accessible bathrooms, in line with their gender identity.

Slide 2:
We all want to p*e in peace! Trans and gender diverse people have the right to use bathrooms that affirm their identity, and that make them feel comfortable and safe. When people are questioned about their right to use a particular bathroom, they no longer feel safe in those spaces. Across campus, there are Male and Female bathrooms, as well as All Gendered bathrooms which can be used by everyone.

To find where the nearest all gender bathroom is, go to:
www.monash.edu/students/support/lgbtiqa/all-gender-toilets

Late Penalty Changes 📣 If you have any questions about this policy change, please don’t hesitate to email: [email protected]

Slide 1: Late penalty Changes. A student win

Slide 2: After countless months of advocacy, the University is finally listening to students and making changes to improve student’s academic experience.

For years, students have been unduly punished for submitting assignments late with a harsh 10% late penalty. This sometimes costs students their grade, WAM or prevents them graduating University at all.

After a long fight, we can confirm that the policy has been changed. Starting Semester 2 2024, students will only face a 5% late penalty for submitting assignments past their due date.

A special thanks to the Academic Board Undergraduate Representatives for helping achieve this goal.

Slide 3: Additionally, Chief Examiners can also decide to waive late penalties when a submission is received within one hour of the close time of the original submission time due to technical difficulties. However, if you have prior academic misconduct, you may not be eligible for this.

Students who are unable to submit their assignments by the submission time due to other exceptional circumstances may also be eligible to apply for special considerations.

If you need advice or help while applying for special considerations, please do not hesitate to reach out to Student Advocacy and Support (SAS) for assistance.

Slide 4: If you have any questions about this policy change, please don’t hesitate to email: [email protected]
