A $10 million donation to Cabrini Health Australia and Monash University is set to transform cancer care for Victorians. The generous gift from the PMF Foundation was inspired by the personal experience of one of Professor Gary Richardson OAM’s patients, whose life was significantly prolonged by the ground-breaking treatment.

The landmark funding will establish a cutting-edge genomic testing program at Cabrini providing personalised, precision treatment for up to 2,000 additional patients annually, including public patients who would otherwise be unable to access such specialised care.

Our highly anticipated Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) Week kicks off today.

We celebrate the diversity that exists within our community, and brings to light the transformative work we are doing across the University to create equitable and more inclusive environments in education and research. Equally, it provides an opportunity for reflection, collaborative problem-solving, and planning for action towards the goals we are yet to achieve.

EDI Week empowers our staff and students to be agents of change, both here at Monash and in their own communities beyond ours. Through a variety of events, training, and interactive workshops, we endeavour to deliver knowledge and develop skills that encourage our community to challenge the norm, to champion the different, and to lead meaningful change.

This year's program extends across our Australian, Malaysian and Indonesian campuses, with hybrid and online offerings available to students and staff in any location around the world.

In a landmark partnership, the GunaiKurnai Land and Waters Aboriginal Corporation (GLaWAC) and Monash University researchers have unearthed evidence of rituals dating back 500 generations.

The findings, published in the scientific journal Nature Human Behaviour, uncover profound insights into the rich heritage of one of the world's oldest living cultures.

The archaeological excavations revealed two small fireplaces, each with a shaped single stick embedded within. The upper fireplace was the size of the palm of a human hand, with a Casuarina stem partially burned amidst the ashes. The second fireplace, buried deeper in the deposit, also contained a single Casuarina stem, this one shaped with an angled-back end like on a throwing stick.

In a remarkable find, chemical analyses revealed that both sticks had been smeared with animal or human fat, and date back to 11,000 and 12,000 years ago respectively, marking the end of the Last Ice Age.

We were honoured to participate in the 2024 Bonn Climate Change Conference at the World Convention Centre in Bonn, Germany where two weeks of intensive negotiations were held across a range of issues where progress is needed on the path to this November in Baku, Azerbaijan.

In his closing speech UN Climate Change Executive Secretary Simon Stiell said “We’ve taken modest steps forward here in Bonn however too many items are still on the table... We’ve left ourselves with a very steep mountain to climb to achieve ambitious outcomes in Baku.”

The COP inter-sessional in Bonn provides a vital mid-year checkpoint to engage with key stakeholders across governments, industry, NGOs and frontline communities to lay the framework for this year’s COP ambitions. Since becoming an official Observer Organisation of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change in 2016, Monash has been a proud participant at COP and COP inter-sessionals in Germany.
