Vertigo Series Part 6

The primary treatment for BPPV involves Canalith Repositioning Maneuvers (CRMs), which aim to move the displaced crystals out of the canals and into an area of the inner ear where they belong and will not cause symptoms. These maneuvers are safe, effective, and typically provide instant vertigo relief. How will you know if treatment has been successful? The positioning tests for diagnosis are repeated and should no longer give you any vertigo!

Vertigo Series Part 5

Diagnosing BPPV is done using specific positional manoeuvres to provoke your vertigo symptoms and observe for small fast involuntary eye movements call nystagmus. Based on the direction and rotation of theses movements and how long they last, the specific type of BPPV can be discerned. This then informs us how to treat it. The videos shows an example of what nystagmus can look like. In Part 6 we will talk about treatment

Vertigo Series Part 4

The primary symptom of BPPV is sudden episodes of vertigo; that is a spinning dizziness (it will look like the world is spinning around you! In BPPV it is triggered by changes in head position. It most commonly is triggered with movements like turning or rolling over in bed, tilting the head back and looking up, or bending over and standing up again. With BPPV vertigo most of the time lasts for less than 60 seconds and is not triggered when your are not moving. Other symptoms may include nausea, vomiting, and imbalance, but these are typically less severe and brief and occur as a result of the spinning sensation. In Part 4 we will talk about how we diagnose BPPV

Vertigo Series Part 3

BPPV, or Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo, is a common internal ear disorder. It occurs when tiny calcium carbonate crystals become dislodged from their normal position within the inner ear and float into the fluid-filled canals responsible for balance. These displaced crystals interfere with the fluid movement in the canals, sending confusing signals to the brain about head position and movement, resulting in brief episodes of vertigo or dizziness. In Part 4 we will talk about the symptoms of BPPV...

Vertigo Series Part 2

BPPV is one of the most common causes of vertigo, accounting for approximately 20-30% of all vertigo cases. It primarily affects adults, with a higher prevalence in individuals over the age of 60. Women are also more likely to develop BPPV than men. Despite its prevalence, BPPV is often underdiagnosed and undertreated, highlighting the importance of awareness and proper management. Which is unfortunate as it is the easiest cause of vertigo to fix! Part 3 will look at what BPPV is...

Vertigo and Dizziness Clinic

Our Physiotherapist Nate has a special interest in managing Vertigo and dizziness and has attended professional development courses to further his skills in managing this condition.

Vertigo can be caused by Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV). BPPV is a prevalent vestibular disorder that affects the inner ear’s balance and orientation mechanisms.

Physiotherapy plays a crucial role in the treatment of BPPV. The goal of physiotherapy for BPPV is to alleviate symptoms by repositioning dislodged calcium crystals (otoconia) within the inner ear’s balance system, ultimately restoring normal balance and reducing vertigo.

You can call the clinic to book with Nate on 02 6672 8495 or book online at www.activelifephysio.com.au. Nate works out of both our Murwillumbah and South Tweed Clinics.
