It's all about the The School What If Bingo Card I just created.
Going back to school or starting school for the first time raises a lot of questions.
There is so much unknown.
One way of normalising these anxieties and opening up conversation is to play a game.
Making it fun helps reduce anxiety about talking about anxiety.
Together you and your child can catch the What if’s as they come up.

How are you going with your New Years resolutions?
If you're struggling there's a very good reason why.
Habits are slippery little suckers.
Here are five myths about habits.
1. It takes 21 days to make a habit. Nope.
It can take up to a year to create a new habit. Depends on the habit and on your individual circumstances
2. You are getting rid of your old habits. Nope
You don’t get rid of old patterns of behaviour, they’re there under the surface. waiting to be reactivated, particularly when you are under stress.
What you are doing is creating new habits, with different neural pathways. Over time they will strengthen and become your go to neural track - they will become a stronger habit and pattern of behaviour than your old one.
3. You just need more motivation. Nope.
Motivation is not enough to sustain change. It can kickstart momentum and provide you with a part of your reason for change, but it's not the how.
4. Failing means you aren't capable of meeting the goal, or you are lacking in motivation. Nope
Failure, or relapse is a normal part of the behaviour change cycle.
5. If you tell myself often enough that you can do it you will. Nope.
Positive affirmations can do more harm than good.
An affirmation is a statement of truth. If what you are saying out loud does not match how you think or feel about yourself, this can create increased inner turmoil and disconnection from your authentic self, making it harder to create and sustain a new healthy lifestyle.
So if motivation and giving yourself pep talks doesn't work, what does?
Starting from a base of awareness and acceptance.
Knowing where you are and what you are currently experiencing allows you to recenter, connect back in with your why (what really matters to you, not just what other people think you should be doing) and keep going.
Here's a video on that from this time last year.
Why is it so hard to change my habits? Why is it so hard to change my habits? One of the main reasons it's so hard to change your habits is the amount of myths circulating about habit change. The ...

Holiday officially over. Jigsaw puzzle complete!
"I release myself from the outcome".
This was the affirmation I used whilst creating my Gingerbread House this year.
I share the process as an example of how to incorporate reflection, action and self-compassion in my latest podcast (managed to sneak another one in before having a short break).
I'd love you to have a listen.

"You can have all the experience and all the knowledge. But if you're an empty vessel, if you're agitating for the sake of it, if your aim behind sharing your knowledge is you know, just to make money or just, progress and growth for the sake of it, you're missing the point. "

CHRISTMAS GIFT TIP
Remember the law of diminishing satisfaction.
The first present your children unwrap will usually give them the greatest joy.
I remember one year in particular watching my children's spirits slowly slip as they opened yet another gift. Too much is too much. It can lead to sensory overload and loss of regulation.
But with all the marketing and hype around it can be challenging to rein your Christmas shopping in.
I found it difficult to limit gifts, until I started noticing some red flags that I had bought too many things.
- Needing to instigate a break in the middle of opening presents. That's pretty ridiculous when you think about it.
- Culling presents I had already wrapped or bought and removing them from the presents they were given on Christmas Day.
- Finding gifts weeks/months later that I had hidden before wrapping and had forgotten I'd even had them.
Have you recognised other red flags?

Walking can be a powerful way to break through isolation and loneliness.

Walking doesn't have to be a chore.
Yes, it's 'good for you', and often suggested as a exercise to improve mental and physical health, and it's benefits are supported by research, especially in conjunction with medication and/or therapy.
But when something is good for you, it can become associated with guilt if you're not doing it.
I share with you one of the reasons why I appreciate the power of walking and one of the strategies I used, and still use to reinforce my daily walk habit.
The Walking is Awesome program wants to help you love the process of your daily walk, not just the results.

Get healthy, go to a green space | The Optimist Daily in the best, we've written a great deal about the health benefits of spending time in green spaces. Here are a few particularly good tidbits.
Are you drowning in work and to do lists?
You see posts of other people chilling, having fun with their kids, meditating, working in a clean and tidy office space, or even the old laptop at the beach photo.
And you wonder how they do it.
You know what you 'should' do to take care of yourself, heck, you probably teach others how to look after themselves, but somehow there's a gap between the knowing and the reality of the doing.
Those 'shoulds' are soul crushers.
Those expectations are exhausting.
The reality gap can be debilitating.
The reality is that self-care can't just be left to chance. If you are doing that, squishing it into the spaces in your life, those moments of calm, they're going to be hard to find and sustain.
If you're ready to start with shoring up those foundations of self-care and diving into prioritising the doing, I would love to support you.
You can subscribe to my emailing list to receive support, and as a bonus receive a First Step from Overwhelm to Calm resource.

One of my driving forces as a later-in-career psychologist is to help reduce the everyday stress that many of my peers face in running their private practices.
So I love it when I see evidence that something I am doing is providing practical help, like in the following email that I received.
------
Unfortunately I do not have availability for several months, hence I'm appreciative of links so I can forward refer my referrals in a timely manner. It is stressful to have a wait list build up otherwise.

If it is hard for you to say no to people when they are seeking help, you are invited to share the Telehealth Availability List.
