Block Co-Founder Mark Braddock will be presenting at tomorrow evening at 5:00pm at ‘Principles Square’ as part of

There will be 7 presentations of 20 slides x 20 seconds each - that’s less than 7 minutes per presentation. So if Mark’s presentation entitled ‘Design for Design’ sucks, don’t worry there will be another on along in a few minutes. And it’s free. And it’s worth every penny.

Here are some of Mark’s slides spanning over 20 years of working with, and for, other creatives - basically, design for design. If you want the words that go along with the slides, you’ll have to head into Perth tomorrow.

Ten years ago met with a young recently-returned-from-London producer and, fortunately for us, he didn’t have a job for her. He suggested she go speak to Block. We needed an account manager and the rest, as the cliche goes, is history. became the cornerstone of our little agency. Through marriage, a child, another child, the end of her twenties and into her thirties, Jess was to glue that held the craziness that is Block, together. But alas, all great things come to an end. Yesterday, Jess left us to embark on a new career closer to home in the (far) Northern Suburbs. She has decided that government (and the environment) need her, so we suspect it won’t be too long before the whole climate thing is sorted out (the water part of it any way) and she’ll be begging us to return to cashflow reporting.

Until then, Block will have a Jess-sized hole (that sound’s completely wrong, but you get the sentiment!) and is free not to have share his birthday with leap year interlopers.

Jess, we’re missing you already.

We were pretty excited on Friday to open 's Perth Hot+Cold Chart 2023 and see they may have declared us this year's hottest Perth agency. (For those not familiar with the chart, the vertical axis is number of employees, the horizontal chart reads cold to hot). But then we got to thinking - how are you meant to read the chart? So Block's Forensic Statistics Investigations Unit spent the weekend pouring over the diagram, and theses are their conclusions ...

If we take as the point-of-comparison the left or the centre of the boxes that bound the agency names, then it is clear in Figure (1) & (2) that Block has indeed been deemed by Campaign Brief as the hottest agency in Perth.

However, if the right edge of the boxes are taken as the point-of-comparison, then things get more complicated. For this analysis we had to employ advanced digital enhancement technology (specifically the magnifying glass tool in Photoshop) to review the data at a pixel level.

The enhanced images - Figures (3 A-C) show that Block is barely two pixels on the hotter side of our nearest rival. Our team is uncomfortable assigning intentionality to this two pixel difference as it could just be an imperfection in the artworking of the chart.

So, in conclusion, we are happy to report that according to Campaign Brief, Block is either the hottest or equal-hottest Perth agency in 2023.

🎉!

Block Launches into the New Year off the Back of East Coast and International Property Wins

Block has hit the ground running in 2023 after a series of new business wins at the tail-end of last year, including Eastern Creek Quarter Shopping Centre (Sydney), Quintessential Equity (Melbourne) and Denise Kuriger Design (New York and L.A.).

Following on from the outstanding results of Block's relaunch of Karrinyup in 2021, and the rebrand and ongoing leasing success of Frasers Property’s flagship Perth asset, Central Park, Block has expanded its retail property portfolio, winning strategic and creative marketing services for Frasers Property’s Eastern Creek Quarter (ECQ) Shopping Centre in Sydney's West.

"Karrinyup's launch, and the subsequent attention the campaign garnered in the retail sector nationally last year, led to this exciting opportunity. ECQ is in a period of extensive growth in one of the fastest growing population centres in the country. To be given the chance to help shape its future is a privilege," says Natalie Jenkins, Block's CEO.

Interestingly, Block isn't the first Perth-based business to find a home at ECQ, with iconic fast-service brand Chicken Treat opening their first outlet outside of WA launching there at the end of 2022.

Block has also been appointed by Melbourne-based property private equity group Quintessential Equity to handle marketing and creative services for special brand-building projects.

"Block's long track-record in the Perth CBD market stretches from the launch of Brookfield Place a decade ago to 2022's brand development of OneNinety – Tattarang-owned Fiveight's first commercial project. We've become experts at helping asset owners and managers articulate meaningful differences to the market while working with leasing agents to deliver on their more pragmatic needs," noted Adam Poole, Block's Director of Client Services.

Internationally, Block has been engaged to reposition and rebrand luxury interior design firm Denise Kuriger Design. Working out of New York and Los Angeles, DKD delivers purposefully-tailored and impeccably-crafted commercial and residential environments globally for the world's most discerning clients in incredible locations from Malibu to Manhattan, the Hamptons to Lake Tahoe, the Bahamas to Sydney.

"Collaborating with a client such as Denise Kuriger Design, who themselves are obsessed with the craft of what they produce and work at the highest level globally, has been an absolute pleasure and thrill," continued Poole, "And it is always great to start the new year with such momentum and a plethora of exciting projects and wins."

Another client award win for the team. Today it’s in the Marketing Excellence Awards for Brand Revitalisation. Congrats (again). 🎉

Winning advertising awards for our work is always nice, but a client winning a national industry award for a campaign is even nicer. It means the work resonated in their industry and it earned the respect of their peers. So a huge congrats to on winning big at the Marketing Awards last night for the ‘WA on Stage’ launch campaign.

A new award season kicks off for us with the announcement that we’ve picked up six Finalists in the Awards that recognise the best work produced annually in Australia and New Zealand. The winners will be announced November 12 in Sydney. It takes more than a village to make this work a reality - a huge thanks to all the Blocksters and partners who made it happen, especially to the incredible group of clients who entrusted us with their business.

Proud of our .fountain and ex-Blockhead for their incredible independent collaboration on the Fremantle Design Week brand identity, which launched recently.

On Saturday morning they were the first-up to present in the FDW Conversation Series discussing their process to a sold out crowd at PS Art Space.

It’s fantastic to see more design and arts activations come to life around Perth.

Well done to , the team and the team for their outstanding work bringing FDW to life.

(3/3) offers an alternative to the endless solo hustle of start-up culture, providing founders with a well-rounded approach to achievement that brings all facets of life into the fold, including family, community, and mental health.

The process is guided by Lead Advocate and Founder Kay Foss, who experienced the tumultuous world of start-ups first-hand, and equips founders with the strong personal foundations required for business success and ongoing coaching to encourage ambition without unnecessary sacrifice.

While complete exhaustion has long been viewed as an inevitable evil in the start-up game, Founder Families see a crucial antidote in the right work/life split. Rarely 50/50, they help each individual find their own ‘imperfect balance’ – whatever shape that may take.

This concept was brought to life visually through a suite of impeccably balanced structures. While varied, each form evokes stability and represents a different configuration of business, family, health, community, and personal accomplishment.

The wider brand system complements the versatile collection to further instil a sense of confidence, calm and sophisticated strength.

(3/3) West Australia’s capital has spent sixty years as a city and thousands more as a home. Great work had been done by the council in recent years to address reconciliation and acknowledge local Whadjuk Noongar history but the corporate identity of the municipality, used to celebrate and promote the city, was still a world away from where it needed to be. Block and Nani Creative were enlisted to bring the city’s new era to light.

The brand identity, informed by community consultations and the City of Perth’s Elders Advisory Group, includes a new brandmark, and systems for dual-naming, photography, and graphics. Each element draws inspiration from Whadjuk Noongar culture and the distinct environment of Boorloo / Perth, including its reputation as Australia’s sunniest capital. An abstract illustration style was developed to represent well-known landmarks with energy and vibrancy. Brand colours were sampled from local flora and fauna, plus the sky at different times of the day. Together, the system brings order, clarity, representation, and a unique identity to Boorloo / Perth. Our city of light.
