Yesterday our Director General, Jodi Cant presented at the Institute of Public Administration Australia WA event ‘Future Ready: A Focus on Agency Capability Reviews’. 📰
This was a chance to reflect on the Public Sector Commission’s Agency Capability Review program.
Agency capability reviews are delivered in partnership with agencies and look at trends in the public sector and facilitate a discussion about excellence and improvement. ↗
As a central agency that delivers more than 300 services, our review was an opportunity to look at the current state of our organisation, reflect on our successes, and identify a roadmap for improvement. 🗺
The independent reviewers found that:
🗝 On the whole, Finance is a well performing agency that is leading key sector-wide initiatives
👨💼 We have a robust and cohesive corporate executive that operates effectively
👍 We are recognised for “getting things done” and respond to changing expectations of our role
👩💼 We are a leader in procurement and deliver on commitments
As part of our improvement road map we are working on better communicating our role as a central agency, meeting customer expectations and elevating our functional leadership role in in asset management.
The review also looked for the “glitter” in our agency (the things we do really well). When asked about what our glitter moments are Jodi Cant told the IPAA delegates – ‘we don’t just have glitter, we are the entire glitter disco ball!’ 🌟 This relates specifically to our values, our dedicated staff, the transparency and leadership of our Corporate Executive and our journey to be the .

🖤💛❤ NAIDOC Week Wrap 🖤💛❤
At Finance we are committed to reconciliation through engagement and collaboration. For NAIDOC Week we hosted a range of events, from artist workshops to film clubs showcasing important Indigenous stories.
To kick off the week we held a collective canvas workshop where Noongar artist Julianne Wade led staff in a painting journey. Julianne started the canvas design featuring some koorlbardi (magpies) and staff came down all to to complete the artwork. 🎨
Our final artist workshop for the week featured Noongar artist, Sharyn Egan who taught Finance and Department of Training and Workforce Development WA staff binding and wrapping techniques to create animal totems. 🦘

We are proud to share our new Aboriginal brand extension.
As an organisation that’s passionate about acknowledging and respecting the traditional custodians of Western Australia, we have extended our Finance brand to include unique Aboriginal design elements.
This reflects our commitment to reconciliation, engagement and collaboration. 🤝
We worked closely with Aboriginal-led creative agency, Nani Creative, who developed our well-recognised pebble design (which represents our values of clarity, collaboration, empathy and growth), on this new branding.
Elements of the design share different stories about our organisation. For example, the emu and kangaroo tracks represent Finance always going forward in the future, alongside regional communities, while the blue-green circles show future expansion and collaboration opportunities for us in all communities. 🦘
At Finance, we’re always keen to share our story, particularly about our role as a central agency, leading and delivering projects and services on behalf of the WA Government.

🖤💛❤NAIDOC Week 2024🖤💛❤
The theme for this year’s NAIDOC Week is Keep the Fire Burning! Blak, Loud and Proud.
It’s all about standing in solidarity and amplifying voices that have long been silenced. 📣
At Finance, we’re committed to reconciliation and along with our Department of Training and Workforce Development WA colleagues we attended a Smoking Ceremony led by Wadjuk Noongar Elder, Emeritus Professor Dr Leonard Collard followed by a Welcome to Country.
Len yarned about the Noongar language and this year’s NAIDOC theme.
Staff at Djookanup were treated to music by Boox Kid (Jarred Wall), while colleagues at RevenueWA and our regional offices held their own NAIDOC celebrations.

Zero waste, full taste - from scraps to sustainability 🥕
Did you know that 7.6 million tonnes of food go to waste in Australia every year? 🗑
Finance continues to lead the way in promoting and supporting sustainability across government through innovative and creative activities. 🧠
Our Advisory Services team recently ran an innovative event to help educate representatives from other government agencies who purchase from our groceries and waste common use agreements on ways to Reduce, Reuse and Recycle.
Our team with OzHarvest to show attendees how to prepare food with zero waste. The group also got to visit Dumas House and see how they use a specific machine to turn food scraps into fertiliser for the surrounding garden. 🌳
This is all part of our commitment to the UN Sustainable Development Goals: Responsible Consumption and Production. We want to lead by example and show how we can make a positive difference in our community and our planet. 🌏
You say goodbye and I say hello. 👋
While we are sad to say goodbye to Jenna McMahon as the Director, Office of the Director General, it is a big hello to Nicola Jordan, who is the new participant in the Public Sector Commission’s Women in Executive Leadership Program, here at Finance.🙋♀️

📢 Exciting news! 📢
The Cook Government is continuing to leverage its purchasing power to drive better outcomes for women in the workplace. 🧍♀️
From 1 July 2024, all eligible suppliers bidding for State agency contracts will be required to disclose their compliance with Workplace Gender Equality Agency (WGEA) reporting obligations. Government trading enterprises (GTEs) will also implement gender responsive procurement measures in a separate pilot project.
This move follows a successful two-year pilot that has already seen contracts worth over half a billion dollars awarded with a gender equality clause. 🙋
Let's continue to support workplace choices for women and drive cultural change together! 💼👩💼

Congratulations to Hassell Architects!
Last night WA Chapter of the Australian Institute of Architects celebrated their annual awards.
A big congratulations to Hassell Architects who have been recognised for the design of the Stage 2 build at Bob Hawke College. The project won the Education Category award (the Hillson Beasley award), from a strong field of other projects. 🌧️ 💧Wanjoo Makuru, the season spanning from June to July, is the coldest and wettest time of the year — aligning with winter. This is when Noongar people would move away from the sea and head inland. Away from the cold winds that bring the wet weather.
🦘Makuru is also known as the season of fertility, when animals begin pairing for the upcoming breeding season. You may notice wardongs (ravens)🐦⬛ flying together; if you live along the lakes and rivers of the Noongar region you may notice an influx of mali (black swans), which are also preparing to breed.
🪻The blues and purples of the land will start to burst forth, from the Blueberry Lilly (Dianella revoluta), Scarlett banksia and the Purple Flags (Patersonia occidentalis). Towards the end of July, the weeping peppermint (Agonis flexuosa) will begin to bloom as the blues make way for the white of Djilba.

We walk together.
As part of our reconciliation events, Whadjuk Noongar elder Steven Jacobs led Finance and Department of Training and Workforce Development staff on a walk around the surrounds of our office Djookanup, located in Osborne Park. The name Djookanup means the ‘place of young women harvesting food’ in Noongar language.
We started our event with an acknowledgement from our Reconciliation Action Plan Chair, and CorpEx member, Henrietta Farrell GAICD followed by a Welcome to Country by Steven Jacobs.
Staff from both agencies went on a reflective walk around Glendalough Reserve before lunch was served by Gather Foods catering. Steven then shared more stories and truth telling over lunch.
We are halfway through National Reconciliation Week and already the conversations and events have been incredibly powerful. We have reflected, reviewed, conversed, and are taking action. There’s so much more to be done.

🖤💛❤️Today we joined with our colleagues from Department of Training and Workforce Development WA for a brilliant Deadly Yarns panel discussion.
Facilitated by Shem Garlett with guest speakers Shahna Rind from State Library of WA, Wayne Ryder from Palmerston and Margaret Shaw from Marr Mooditj Training.
We heard powerful accounts of their journey walking in many worlds, crafting their own destiny, knowing and learning their family stories and histories and how each presenter is working to nurture Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in their endeavours.
Some big takeaways from today were centred around the theme Now More Than Ever and the role allies can, and should, play in progressing change and working towards reconciliation, particularly around training and employment opportunities.
We look forward to more Deadly Yarns together. 🖤💛❤️

Today, 26 May, is National Sorry Day, an important day to remember the past policies of forcefully removing Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children from their families and communities, these children we now know as the Stolen Generations.
It is a day to acknowledge the wrongs of the past as well as the strength of Stolen Generations survivors and reflect on how we can all play a part in the healing process for our people and nation.
In the lead up to today, our staff participated in a range of activities to learn more the Bringing Them Home Report and the experiences and strength of Stolen Generations survivors.
Our offices shared stories and histories of members of the Stolen Generation and facts were shared through an online quiz. We also observed a minute’s silence along with our colleagues at of Training Development and Works.

May 17 is significant date because in 1990 homosexuality was removed from the WHO classification of diseases.

At Finance, our value is empathy and we champion inclusivity and a workplace that’s a safe space for those in the LGBTQIA+ community. We want everyone to feel comfortable and to be their authentic selves. ❤🧡💛💚💙💜
