Millions of pines planted to target net zero 13/09/2024

We’re proud to partner with Water Corporation to plant close to 2 million 🌲 pine trees 🤩, helping to fight climate change and producing sustainable timber for future homes in WA! 💚

Millions of pines planted to target net zero We've taken a further step towards net-zero greenhouse gas emissions, establishing pine plantations in WA's South West to help offset carbon emissions.

Spring has sprung! 🌸 As our planting season draws to a close, we’re sharing what it takes from seed to product in renewable forestry.

It starts in our Manjimup nursery 🌱 then to our plantations across the South West where we plant and care for the trees 🌲 as they grow and sequester carbon before harvested to supply WA with timber resources.

The cycle continues as we replant our plantations, making sustainable timber resources the !

Not all heroes wear capes! At the FPC, our forestry heroes 🤩 propagated and planted around 5 million pine seedlings on 3,500 hectares of plantations this winter, an equivalent of walking to Sydney and back, then up to Exmouth! 😮

💖 Thank you Jackie Jarvis MLC and Jane Kelsbie - Member for Warren-Blackwood for visiting one of our new pine plantations this week! 🌲

The seedlings that we plant today will produce sustainable timber for future homes in WA 🏘, all while capturing carbon to fight climate change 🙌

🌲From little things, big things grow 🏡

Pine from plantations across our South West will eventually be used to build around 25,000 Western Australian homes.

Recently our Government, through the Forest Products Commission, WA (FPC), acquired a new softwood pine plantation near Manjimup.

It’s all part of the record $350 million investment in WA’s softwood pine industry.

Since 2023, the FPC has secured 25 properties totalling more than 8,800 hectares.

Jane Kelsbie - Member for Warren-Blackwood and I are proud that our Government is acting and supporting the needs of our housing and construction sector.

We’re asking all Perth residents to keep an eye out for the polyphagous shot-hole borer 26/07/2024

While pine trees are not likely to be susceptible to polyphagous shot-hole borer ( ), we’re staying vigilant and monitoring our plantations 🧐

These borers can be difficult to spot because they’re so small, but there are signs to look out for. Our friends at Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development have prepared some tips for how to recognise PSHB @ https://bit.ly/3Wl9gRB

In fair weather, prepare for the future ☔ – that’s what we’re doing installing 6 new purpose-built water tanks in strategic locations recently to serve as reliable, safe emergency water sources in areas where dams or other water sources are not accessible 🙌

These water tanks are established to meet long-term fire protection needs of local communities and the State’s plantations, with FPC Operations staff ensuring these tanks and others are brimming and functional as we emerge from winter and head into summer ☀

This important initiative is made possible by the great collaboration of various FPC teams, private plantation managers, and local community fire control officers 🤝

We’re not resting on our laurels post fire season – FPC are staying on top of the game with training, conducted by Department of Fire and Emergency Services WA (DFES) 👊

The training gets a thumbs-up from participants who gained invaluable knowledge and learned about interagency relationships that are crucial for an effective, coordinated fire response, which is especially critical in aerial suppression 🤝

The ability of FPC firefighters to help coordinate aerial support with other agencies is vital to the long-term protection of local communities and the State’s plantations 🌲

With favourable weather conditions, our silviculture team is geared up to plant an estimated 5 million pine seedlings 😮

We look forward to another prolific planting season, made possible by the seamless collaboration between FPC Manjimup Nursery staff and silviculture and operations teams, from growing and dispatching the seedlings to establishing planting sites 🤝

Our silviculture team will care for these seedlings over the years as they grow to become sustainable timber and wood products for WA’s housing and construction industry 🏘

Let’s hope for some good rain in the Shire of Cranbrook, so the town can fill their two new rainwater tanks installed with funding from the 2023 FPC Community Fire Protection Grants Program 🙏

The rainwater tanks catch water runoff from the shire’s community hall, increasing water storage for emergencies, accessible by local bushfire brigade and neighbouring shires 🚒

Shire of Cranbrook’s Chief Executive Officer Linda Gray said, “We thank the FPC for the grant and very much enjoyed working with them on this project. The rainwater tanks increase water storage for firefighting. Additionally, they also reduce the damage to the community hall from water runoff, contributing to the retention of the hall for the local community over the next 50 years.”

We look forward to supporting more South West communities again this year with the 2024 FPC Community Fire Protection Grants Program, which applications are currently being evaluated and recipients to be announced soon 📢

While assessing the submissions for the 2024 FPC Community Fire Protection Grants Program, we’re delighted to share stories of the 2023 recipients.

Radios were a big feature in 2023, and the Shire of Nannup also utilised their grant to procure UHF handheld radios, enabling brigade members on firegrounds to effectively communicate with each other and report to the Incident Management Team 👩‍🚒👨‍🚒

It’s great to be able to contribute to Shire of Nannup’s preparedness and response capabilities, keeping the local communities and the State’s softwood plantations safe from bushfire 🤝

Two recipients of the 2023 FPC Community Fire Protection Grants Program, the Shire and McAlinden Bush Fire Brigade in Boyup Brook, utilised the grants to acquire VHF handheld radios and fast-fill trailer with high-volume pump and standpipe 🚒

The radios aid the fire crews to effectively communicate with each other on firegrounds, contributing to their safety while the fast-fill trailer boosts response speed with quick refill of fire trucks and firefighting aircrafts’ water bladders for aerial attack ✈

It’s great to be able to support Boyup Brook to keep the local communities and the State’s softwood plantations safe from 🤝
