News from last night’s September Ordinary Meeting of Council 🗞️

📝 Four petitions were received from the community as part of the Local Planning Scheme 6 Review and these will be considered at the February 2025 Ordinary Meeting of Council.

📊 To help us meet our financial sustainability goals and set priorities in line with our Council Plan, Council adopted the City of Melville Long-Term Financial Plan 2024-2025 to 2033-2034.

🏉 We’ll finalise a variation to the lease for the Tompkins Park Sporting and Recreation Association (TPRCA) for the use of the Tompkins Park Clubrooms, following a request from the Association to simplify rent terms and include Canning Room into the lease area so that TPRCA manage all bookings of this room.

🍃 Council noted that the final Community Climate Action Plan will be presented at the October 2024 Ordinary Meeting of Council to allow for more time to consolidate a report on the community feedback and brief Elected Members

🌳 Council has requested a report to be prepared in relation to reclassifying land located at 4-6 Almondbury Road, Booragoon from Public Open Space to A Class Reserve which will look at providing greater protection to this part of Wireless Hill Park and this will be considered by Council in December 2024.

🎥 All public meetings of our Council will be audio-visual recorded and the livestream will be accessible from our website for a period of five years, after Council approved an amended version of CP-088 Live Streaming and Audio-Visual Recordings of Public Meetings of the Council, with the updated policy to come into effect following the November 2024 Ordinary Meeting of Council.

Minutes from the meeting will go live on Friday. For more information, visit https://www.melvillecity.com.au/agendas

Share your feedback on the draft concept design for Kearns Crescent Streetscape Upgrade.

To help realise the potential of the Riseley Centre as a vibrant hub, we are working to improve the streetscape along Kearns Crescent with footpaths, greenery and places to sit and spend time.

Following engagement with local businesses and community, we have developed a draft concept design that balances the need to improve safety and access on both sides of Kearns Crescent with the need for parking at the centre.

We are seeking feedback on the draft concept plan, which you can see at https://www.melvillecity.com.au/kearnscres

Share your feedback by 4.00pm Wednesday, 2 October 2024.

Welcoming Week is taking place this week around Australia.

As part of the national Welcoming Cities network across Australia, we share in the vision for a place where people of all backgrounds have equal opportunity to belong, contribute and thrive.

Within our diverse community, we have lots of people making a difference such as JingShu Li, who volunteers at the Chinese Baby Rhyme Time at Bull Creek Library.

JingShu sees Rhyme Time as an opportunity for parents to learn to involve their child through play, and an important time for the parent to focus on their child.

It is also a place that parents can connect with other parents who may not have family support in Australia, and children can be exposed to their parents’ native language.

Welcoming Week runs until Sunday, 22 September.

R U OK? Any Day aims to remind us that every day is the day to ask, ‘are you OK?’ and start a meaningful conversation that could save a life. If you feel that someone you know may be feeling down or just hasn’t been themself, trust that gut instinct and act on it.💛

By starting a conversation and commenting on the changes you’ve noticed, you could help that family member, friend or workmate open up and feel comfortable seeking help.

Follow the below tips to offer support to someone you care about:
❔ Ask R U OK? Any Day
👂 Listen with an open mind as they talk about how they’re feeling
👍 Encourage action and suggest some steps they can take to manage their situation
🤝 Check in soon to see how they’re going and show you care

For more information and advice, visit: www.ruok.org.au/how-to-ask

⚠️ We’re not out of the woods yet! ⚠️

The tiny polyphagous shot-hole borer beetle (PSHB) is still a threat to trees in the Perth metro area - including within the City of Melville area. 🌳😢

That’s a swish! 🏀 🏐

Our Mayor Katy Mair and CEO Gail Bowman recently met with Sam Lim MP and members of the Tingara Netball Club to celebrate the positive outcomes from the netball and basketball courts being resurfaced at Karoonda Reserve in Booragoon.

The project has helped the netball club with two more netball courts in close proximity to their current courts at the local primary school and helped develop a stronger club culture introducing the usage of the Brentwood Karoonda Sporting Association clubrooms.

The courts have opened up the opportunity for the Tingara Netball Club and the broader community to further connect with local sporting groups and strengthen relationships at our redeveloped sporting asset.

We’re thankful of a $145,000 contribution from the Federal Government to deliver this $320,000 project for the community.
