R U OK? Any Day aims to remind us that every day is the day to ask, ‘are you OK?’ and start a meaningful conversation that could save a life. If you feel that someone you know may be feeling down or just hasn’t been themself, trust that gut instinct and act on it.💛

By starting a conversation and commenting on the changes you’ve noticed, you could help that family member, friend or workmate open up and feel comfortable seeking help.

Follow the below tips to offer support to someone you care about:
❔ Ask R U OK? Any Day
👂 Listen with an open mind as they talk about how they’re feeling
👍 Encourage action and suggest some steps they can take to manage their situation
🤝 Check in soon to see how they’re going and show you care

For more information and advice, visit: www.ruok.org.au/how-to-ask

That’s a swish! 🏀 🏐

Our Mayor Katy Mair and CEO Gail Bowman recently met with Sam Lim MP and members of the Tingara Netball Club to celebrate the positive outcomes from the netball and basketball courts being resurfaced at Karoonda Reserve in Booragoon.

The project has helped the netball club with two more netball courts in close proximity to their current courts at the local primary school and helped develop a stronger club culture introducing the usage of the Brentwood Karoonda Sporting Association clubrooms.

The courts have opened up the opportunity for the Tingara Netball Club and the broader community to further connect with local sporting groups and strengthen relationships at our redeveloped sporting asset.

We’re thankful of a $145,000 contribution from the Federal Government to deliver this $320,000 project for the community.

News from last night’s August Ordinary Meeting of Council 🗞️

🔭 Following broad community consultation that identified community priorities and aspirations along with an extensive Elected Member strategic planning process, Council adopted the City of Melville Council Plan for the Future 2024-2034. The Council Plan is our strategic direction for the next 10 years, and sets the vision for a vibrant, sustainable, inclusive Melville.

🏗️ As part of our commitment to the community to have fit-for-purpose facilities, Council approved the contractors for Blue Gum Community Centre Renovation and Public Toilet Renewal, and new changerooms and clubroom at Len Shearer Reserve in Booragoon.

🚶‍♀️ To transform Ogilvie Road in Mount Pleasant into a more walkable and vibrant area, Council approved the contractor to undertake works for the Ogilvie Road Streetscape Upgrade project.

🎄 Apex Reserve in Canning Bridge and our Civic Centre will light up with Christmas displays again this year after Council endorsed the budget for this project for a second straight year. Future will budget for Christmas light displays will be considered as part of the Annual Budget process from 2025-2026 onwards.

🏏 In response to a petition requesting an increase in the number of sports changerooms as part of the Troy Park Reserve Sports Pavilion Upgrade, we’ll review the concept design in consultation with the Troy Park Sporting Association and key user groups.

🍛 To provide guidance on the requirements for the operations of mobile food trucks and encourage them to operate in locations that support the activation of specified public spaces, Council endorsed the Council Policy Mobile Food Vendors.

🎾 Following Applecross Tennis Club’s proposal to install lighting towers, Council has endorsed a draft report from the Department of Biodiversity, Conversation and Attractions with an amendment that the floodlights be installed with a timer that ensures lights do not operate between the hours of 9.00pm and 6.00am, Monday to Sunday.

The draft report will be sent to the Minister for Environment as the decision maker.

🏢 As part of the Canning Bridge Activity Centre Plan (CBACP) Review, Council noted a request from the Department of Planning, Lands and Heritage for further information with respect to the community benefit and bonus floorspace calculations as it continues to assess the CBACP.

The City will lead further investigations into the calculation of community benefit values and has agreed to the Western Australian Planning Commission’s request for an extension of time until 31 December 2024 to allow consideration of the proposed modification to the Canning Bridge Activity Centre Plan.

🦉 Protect our Wildlife: Choose Safe Rodent Control! 🐾

Rodent baits can harm native wildlife and pets, especially second-generation anticoagulant rodenticides (SGARs). These poisons don’t just kill rats—they can also kill animals like owls that eat poisoned rodents.

We've taken steps to mitigate these risks, including:
🚯 No longer suppling rat baits to customers
🌱 Sharing information about wildlife-friendly rodent control options
📸 Providing access to wildlife cameras, available to hire in our libraries to help identify species before baiting.

To learn more about alternative control options and other actions you can take, visit: actforbirds.org/ratpoison

Together, we can protect our precious owls and other wildlife!
