SORRENTO CHASING MORE GLORY
Sorrento wrapped up the State League Division One title on Saturday, and with it comes an instant return to the NPL-WA.
The club have so far played eighteen games, won sixteen, drawn twice and lost none, with four games to go and have 50 points. A remarkable record so far. But is it a record?
The most points ever achieved by a team in WA's second tier is the 72 points that Ferndale United won in 1990. However, there were sixteen teams in the league for a thirty game season that year. Not really comparable when the most you can get in a twenty-two game season is 66 points.
When comparing a twelve team league and a twenty-two game season (which for the most part has been the norm for the second tier over the years), the best record is held by Rockingham United from 1976, when they won nineteen games, drew twice and lost once. This would give them a total of 59 points under the three point a win system we use today.
The second best record was only two years ago, when Olympic Kingsway won Division One with a nineteen win, one draw, 2 loss season, with 58 points.
As it stands, if Sorrento win the remaining of their matches, they will end up with 62 points to claim the record. Three wins and a draw will also be enough.
Sorrento have now won fifteen games in a row, and have equaled the record for the second tier in a twenty-two game season. They now share it with Stirling Macedonia, who also won fifteen in a row in their 2021 championship winning season. The gulls will break this record next week if they defeat Cockburn City.
Prior to that, Rockingham United in 1976 and Stirling Cracovia in 1978 won thirteen matches in succession on their way to their respective championships.
The most goals scored was Macedonia in 2021 with seventy-two goals, followed by seventy goals shared by Rockingham (1976) and Canning City (2008). Sorrento have currently scored fifty-eight.
Only once in a twelve team league in Division One has a a team gone undefeated, and that was Canning City in 2008, with a sixteen win, 6 drawn record.
It must be noted the season Western Knights had in Division One in 1995. This was also a twelve team league, however due to crowd trouble in the First Division night series, it was decided by the then controlling body of the competition that both league games against Dianella White Eagles were declared void and not played. Even though playing two games less compared to their nearest rivals, they still won the league, with a seventeen win, two drawn, one loss record, claiming 53 points while scoring sixty-seven goals.
