Early bird deadline extended for our Permaculture Living Course until Sunday 11th August! Only two early bird tickets left!
The Permaculture Living Course is a hands-on course exclusive to Perth City Farm. It was really popular with last year's participants, and we're excited to be running it again this year.
βEveryone in the world needs this course. Itβs practical and feel good and provides knowledge and tools to help you create the life you want.β So we reckon you'll like it too!
What to expect: over five days in October you'll learn practical skills and gather inspiration to live a more sustainable and connected life. Topics cover everything from productive food growing, composting and water use in urban settings to foraging, fermenting, alternative energy use and so much more.
Lead by Martina of Perth City Farm and Rod of Leafcutter Permaculture, the Permaculture Living Course will support you on a journey of life long learning and connect you with a like-minded community. Plus, we'll have plenty of fun along the way.
βI loved how Rod and Martina made every area of learning interesting, even the subject areas I thought I wasnβt going to be interested in.β
We hope you'll join us! Find out more and get tickets here: https://events.humanitix.com/perth-city-farm-permaculture-living-course-2024

Have you made any changes this ?
Weβve been busy out in Perth sharing the message and teaching some cool skills with sessions on low waste living, gift giving and deodorants at QV1 and Central Park Perth . Carrot top pesto with seedy crackers was a particular hit and sparked some interesting conversations.
Back at the Farm we made a few simple changes like moving from teabags to loose leaf tea and brainstorming a container exchange program for our wholesale produce customers like to cut out plastic bags. This is how we approach sustainable living- steady change in manageable ways, not aiming for absolute perfection.
Let us know how you've gone with - wins and challenges!
Hope to see you at the Farmer's Market this Saturday for some seasonal shopping, and maybe a bite to eat at Be Free who create delicious plates using local, organic and seasonal ingredients.
Eating produce that's in season is more nutritious, yummier and kinder to Earth. Do your seasonal shopping with a local farmer or grower and you're helping support local businesses while choosing produce that hasn't travelled far to be on your plate.

We have just harvested some Aztec glass gem corn in the market garden. Isn't it the prettiest thing ever?
Glass gem is a variety of flint corn, meaning it has harder kernels and less sugar content than sweet corn. It is usually not eaten fresh but made into flour for polenta, tortillas, and similar dishes. It is also perfect for popcorn, so after saving enough seeds for next year, that is what we might make!
Flint corn was staple food for many North American Indigenous people, usually prepared as a mash called hominy.
While sweet corn varieties are mostly F1 cultivars, we can't save seeds from, glass gem is a stable heritage variety, so we will definitely keep enough for next year's planting.
Have you grown flint corn before, and what have you made from it?
Some plastic-free tips from the team at Perth City Farm. Anyone else doing ? Share your swaps with us in the comments!
1. Use bar soap, like these gorgeous ones from Mika Soaps (find them every Saturday at our Farmer's Market).
2. Buy loose produce and bulk goods (bring your own reusable bags and jars).
3. Opt for nature-based toys and play with what you can find (these cute nests from Storytime with Grandma Rosie at the farm yesterday).
4. Dine-in or bring your own cup.
5. Make snacks from scratch like these quesadillas Kate and Jackson made for us yesterday.
Keen to hear what plastic-free efforts you've been making. Our accounts manager Kate has been on a journey to reduce plastic consumption since 2017. She recommends making one simple swap at a time.
We had a blast at the soft opening of Be Free at Perth City Farm last Saturday. Thanks everyone who came along and supported our new venture with !
We hope to see you this coming farmer's market, Sat 13 July, for more coffee and organic eats before or after your weekly shop. Our stallholders have an abundance of winter produce including organic and spray-free fruit and veg, mushrooms, honey, seafood, baked goods, soaps and organic spirits.

We had a fun day on the farm with our corporate volunteers today!
We made the most of the sunshine today and seeded out a new market garden bed with French breakfast radishes, planted more brassica seedlings and flowers around the farm, did some seed saving and attempted to create hoops for a wreath making workshop from mulberry cuttings.
The lovely volunteers from Fortescue helped us with these tasks and learned a lot about gardening, permaculture, native plants and animals, and more. We even discovered a few new insects in the garden that we hadn't encountered yet before - always exciting!
If you are interested in coming to volunteer in the garden with us, head to https://perthcityfarm.org.au/volunteer/corporate-volunteering/ and fill in the enquiry form.
A special school holiday edition of Storytime with Grandma Rosie and friends at the farm this morning. We sang songs, read stories, potted plants and got creative making nests and nature-inspired costumes. We even had some yummy soup to warm us up.
Storytime with Grandma Rosie and friends happens on the second Wednesday of every month at Perth City Farm from 9.30-10.30am. Rosie will read a story, share her wisdom and weβll go on an adventure together; to meet the chickens, smell some herbs & flowers or explore this beautiful oasis.
We hope you will join us next time. Find more info on our website: https://perthcityfarm.org.au/event/storytime-with-grandma-rosie/all/

Have you heard of Wild Brewing? It is the art of capturing naturally occurring, wild yeasts to create fizzy sodas with or without alcohol. Our instructor Tim Greaves will lead you on a journey to discover the delightful drinks you can make with foraged and local ingredients such as raw honey, native blossoms, green pine cones, and various botanicals.
Once you have understood this simple but fascinating process, there is no limit to your creativity. You will have endless possibilities for creating new flavour combinations.
There will be plenty of tastings during the workshop and you will go home with a ferment to get you started.
You can book this workshop through the link in our bio.
Everyone like getting a nice bouquet of flowers. But the cut-flower industry has a dark side, with unsustainable practices causing soil degradation, carbon emissions, and labour exploitation.
Why not grow your own flowers and learn how to make beautiful garden posies to cheer up your home or to give away? We have just released a new workshop to offer you just that. Garden Posies with Iris will teach you to get the best out of your homegrown flowers and greens.
You can book the workshop at https://events.humanitix.com/garden-posies-with-iris
