Rosemary: A fabulous herb! So much you can do with it, so many medicinal properties.

Here you see:
- Rosemary infused coconut oil. I'm going to make an ointment with this for stimulating healthy hair.
- Rosemary, ginkgo and basil vinegar. All fabulous, stimulating brain herbs. A nice little brew for me to take every day.
- Rosemary infusing in olive oil. I'll add other warming herbs for a stimulating, healing salve.

MANY SHADES OF GREY

With age comes wisdom and experience ā€“ we know that.

Weā€™ve have seen more of life; weā€™ve had to cope with more.

The most important thing for SuperAgers is HOW we cope.
When youā€™re going through a tough time and you wake up to grey skies, after a sleepless night

Do you sink into depression? Give up?

OR

Do what SuperAgers do: Get up and get out there wanting to win another day?

A brisk, 40 minute walk EVERY MORNING, can make all the difference. Grey skies and rain are no excuse (ok, torrential rain might let you off).

However much you DONā€™T WANT TO DO IT ā€“ Do It.

Plan for it the night before. Put suitable clothes out.

Get out before your brain has a chance to talk you out of it.

I promise, it will make ALL the difference.

Your grey mood will lift. Not only for now, but quite possibly for the rest of the day. And you might find that grey sky not as bad is you thought it would be.

Todayā€™s message: Whatever is going on in your life. Get out there! Get moving! It will help. A lot. Donā€™t let the grey get you down.

WHY I TAKE GINKGO EVERY DAY

I am a survivor. I plan to survive whatever life throws at me. Not only survive - but THRIVE

But, I canā€™t do it alone. I need human, plant and mineral allies.

And, thatā€™s where Ginkgo comes in. There are few plants which have survived and thrived better than Ginkgo trees.

Gingos are one of the most ancient trees on earth. Not only can a Ginkgo tree live beyond 1000 years, but the species dates back 270 million years.

The trees are incredible survivors. Not only in my garden, which enjoys climate conditions totally unhospitable to Ginkgos during our very hot, very dry summers, but in 1945 six of the trees are said to have survived in Hiroshima, near the bomb site. They still live today.

During the millions of years of evolution, Ginkgo trees have picked up a thing or two.

And, thatā€™s what we can take advantage of when we supplement with Ginkgo.

Itā€™s the more than 40 chemical components (such as flavonoids, terpenoids, and ginkgolides) which the tree has developed to protect itself from disease and environment that we can use to protect our nerves, heart muscle, blood vessels and eyes. To protect our circulation, and to help us thrive as we age.

There is excellent, published scientific evidence of the benefits that Ginkgo bestows in protecting our brain, our cognitive health, from Dementia and Alzheimerā€™s disease.

Tinnitus is another very common condition where there is high calibre published evidence of the protective and curative effects of Ginkgo.

There is other evidence of benefits in neurological diseases, circulatory diseases, mental health and migraines.

I would be very sorry indeed if I couldnā€™t take Ginkgo regularly.

HOW TO TAKE GINKGO
I like to take it in tincture form. Please contact me if you would like help obtaining this. Otherwise, there are some good quality supplements available.

DO YOU EAT THIS HEALTH PROMOTING FOOD?

A food which is proven to hugely decreases your risk of chronic disease ā€“ like diabetes and Alzheimerā€™s.

If youā€™re not eating this food every day ā€“ then think again!

Time and again published studies demonstrate the value of eating eggs. For example, a study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, which followed men aged between 42-60 years for 20 years discovered that there was a direct correlation between eating eggs and a large, significantly reduced risk of Diabetes. Those who ate just 4 eggs per week, had a 37% lower risk of type 2 Diabetes.

Having diabetes increases your risk of developing Alzheimerā€™s by 50% - therefore, itā€™s safe to assume that eating eggs will reduce that risk.

Having diabetes increases your risk of developing Alzheimerā€™s by 50% - therefore, itā€™s safe to assume that eating eggs will reduce that risk.

Eggs are almost a perfect food.

Eggs are high in protein, minerals and vitamins. They are also great sources of antioxidants and HEALTHY cholesterol and fats.

Eggs also maintain balanced blood sugar levels (poorly balanced blood sugar is a major driver of chronic diseases like cancer, heart disease, Alzheimerā€™s, and, of course, diabetes.

Published studies have also shown that eating eggs for breakfast is a great way to lose weight, or control your weight.

but be mindful of quality. Try to find eggs from free-range, pastured chickens. Farmerā€™s markets are great places for good eggs.

WHO WANTS A BIG, HEALTHY BRAIN?

If your answer is ā€œI doā€, then you would do well to bear in mind the following information:

What we eat has a PROFOUND influence on the health of our brain. If you want to maintain your brain (and overall health) you MUST take this seriously!

Did you know that there is a direct correlation between levels of a number of vitamins and your brain size and thinking ability?
WHEN YOU KNOW THIS, YOU MIGHT WANT TO DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT!

A very interesting study, The Oregon Brain Aging Study, analysed the blood of 104 adults, and found there was a direct correlation between the levels of various nutrients, brain size and thinking ability (measured by various neuropsychological tests).

The nutrients in question were: vitamins B1, B2, B6, B9, B12, C, D, E, and fatty acids (omega-3). High levels of these nutrients were a clear and strong predictor of brain health.

Other nutrients found to be important included vitamins A and K and antioxidants.

But what about ā€œAntinutrientsā€ This study also correlated certain antinutrients with low brain health: One of the strongest correlations was: trans-fat (hydrogenated vegetable oil). The more that was present in the blood, the smaller the brain and the lower the thinking capacity.

Of course, we all know to avoid sugar, refined carbohydrates, synthetic sweeteners and processed foods too ā€“ donā€™t we?
SO, WHAT SHOULD YOU DO?

In a nutshell:

ā€¢ Eat real ā€“ not processed food
ā€¢ Avoid fast food (because of trans-fats)
ā€¢ Avoid sugar and refined carbs
ā€¢ Eat more vegetables ā€“ and eat a variety of vegetables.
ā€¢ Try to eat organic whenever possible.

POISONED BY YOUR MAKEUP?

As you know, I have a particular interest in optimising cognitive health, reversing decline and preventing development of disease like Alzheimerā€™s.

Unlikely as it may seem, your make up could be a SIGNIFICANT driver of cognitive decline!

There are a several of reasons for this:

1. Many studies confirm the association between toxic metals, cognitive decline and Alzheimerā€™s disease.

2. Studies have repeatedly shown makeup to contain significant quantities of toxic heavy metals, such as lead, cadmium and arsenic.

3. When applied to your skin, these toxins are able to bypass our normal gatekeepers ā€“ our stomach and liver, and move directly into circulation, resulting in greater toxin accumulation.

I am reading the excellent book on Hashimotoā€™s (Auto-immune thyroid disease) by Isabella Wentz, and in it, she tells the story of how she was prompted, by worsening disease symptoms, to test her own toxic heavy metal levels.

On discovering that her arsenic levels were more than EIGHT times the normal levels, she investigated the cause, and discovered that her lip-gloss ā€“ the one she had been applying several times a day, every day, had unacceptably high levels of arsenic. She remembered that her worsening symptoms dated from exactly the time she started using this lip gloss.

A shocking 2011 Canadian report, in which 49 commonly used pieces of makeup were tested found 100% contained nickel, 96% lead, 90% beryllium, 61% thallium, 51% cadmium, 20% arsenic.
The make up in question included well known, expensive brands.

I routinely test my clients for heavy metal toxicity (via spectroscopic hair analysis), because these metals are such potent drivers of disease and cognitive decline. I often find significant accumulation of toxic metals, and I always advise extreme caution in exposure to sources of toxicity.

Donā€™t underestimate the potential harm your makeup may be doing you. ALWAYS choose carefully. There are some excellent safe options now. Do your research.
