‘Help way earlier!’ – transforming child justice 21/08/2024

The 'Help Way Earlier' Report, released by the Australian Human Rights Commission, finally puts a spotlight on what we've known for years—our child justice system needs urgent .

As National Children’s Commissioner Anne Hollonds states, "Tragically, by not addressing their human rights early on, and instead taking a punitive approach to their offending, we are essentially criminalising some of the most vulnerable children in Australia.”

The report, based on extensive consultations, calls for a National Taskforce for child justice reform, a federal Minister for Children, a Ministerial Council for Child Wellbeing, and a National Children’s Act. With over $1 million spent annually to incarcerate a child who will likely reoffend, it’s clear that our current system is failing.

Instead, these funds should be used to provide trauma-informed, person-centered support that helps children heal.

This report couldn’t have come at a more critical time, as we witness the heartbreaking tragedy of , a young Aboriginal man who lost his life after being unjustly placed in the adult Prison Unit 18.

The call for reform in the 'Help Way Earlier' Report is not just timely—it's absolutely essential.

After reading the "Hear Me Out" Inquiry Report by WA's Commissioner for Children and Young People into the operating model of care in WA's youth detention center's, several critical needs have been highlighted:

• Better access to healthcare for youth in detention
• Improved access to education
• Trauma-informed staff training to handle complex behaviours, mental health issues, and physical impairments
• Enhanced dietary options to nourish and support youth development

Plan and Grow's Safe Community Living Program addresses these findings directly by providing young people exiting Banksia Hill Detention Centre with:

• Immediate safe housing, personal belongings, and family connections
• Access to mentors, health and mental healthcare, and trauma-informed support
• Educational and employment opportunities
• Adequate food and connection to family and friends

We support the Commissioner's call for a child-centered approach that emphasises rehabilitation, respect, and relational security for detained youth.

Our mission to empower people to succeed aligns with the report's vision for a more supportive and rehabilitative justice system!

'Look at what people can actually do': how to make music more accessible for people with disability 07/08/2024

"Learning instruments can help to improve children's ability to learn and has been used as an intervention to support students in low socio-economic areas to reach education benchmarks."

"Despite the enormous benefits of playing musical instruments, people with disabilities and injuries often miss out because they can't play the standard instruments on offer."

According to Monash University, 20% of Australians are living with a disability, with the majority being physical.

Of Australia's practicing musicians, 7% (15,400) are people living with a disability. Remarkably, 70% of these musicians report that the arts have a “big” or “very big” impact on their sense of wellbeing and happiness.

The article below explains how music is evolving to create more opportunities for those with disabilities to push their abilities to new heights.

By making musical instruments more accessible, we can increase the number of people with disabilities who play, fostering a more inclusive and diverse musical community!

Plan and Grow’s model of trauma-informed, neuro-affirming care has transformed the lives of children in care with complex needs. By prioritising stability and individualised support, we have given children like Robert a chance to heal and thrive.

However, new department measures threaten to uproot these children from their stable environments, disregarding their voices and progress. We must stand against these reforms to ensure that children remain in the supportive, nurturing homes that are working.

Read, comment, and share to advocate for their right to remain in the stable, loving homes that are working. Your voice can make a difference!

Let’s advocate for their right to stability and continued growth.

The Charter of Children's Rights refers to the set of rights specifically designed to protect and promote the well-being and development of children.

The most comprehensive and widely recognized document outlining these rights is the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC), adopted by the United Nations General Assembly on November 20, 1989.

The Charter sets a global standard for the treatment and protection of children, ensuring that they are given the opportunity to thrive in a safe and nurturing environment.

At Plan and Grow, we are deeply committed to upholding the principles outlined in the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC). Our dedication to these rights is reflected in every aspect of our programs and services.
