SO when should a baby be rolling?
And I want to be clear - proper rolling, not the accidental ones babies with their larger heads do at 2 weeks old when they are trying to get off their tummies!
(And if you're baby is rolling, but really only over one side all the time - be sure to read the point at the bottom!!)
Rolling is an important process in our development. We learn to appreciate the world in a third dimension, we begin to orient ourselves in space, and we start to develop coordination of arms and legs with our torso.
So when should they be doing this?
According to the latest guide by the CDC, by 6 months of age MOST babies should be rolling from their tummies to their backs.
So what might stop a baby from rolling? Or maybe they are rolling, but always in one direction, always over the same side?
Birthing can be a tough gig. Its quite possibly the most intense thing your child has ever gone through. And what is the widest part of your child's body? Yep - their shoulders. If this gets a bit stuck, it can create a point of discomfort that they might be wanting to avoid. Could a baby with a sore shoulder decide they don't want to roll over that side?
A GREAT article by Siegel et al in 2024 makes it quite clear: "Early intervention of possible motor delays can have a significant impact on a child’s ability to learn new skills and increase their success in school and life". They go on to say that around 15% of children have developmental disabilities that would benefit from physical therapy, but only 3% of infants and toddlers receive the intervention they need".
So if you have a bub that's not quite rolling - time to get them checked!

Don't you love it.
Just finished that feed that seemed to take about 4 years to complete, and you got an awesome burp out and you think "oh we're safe" only to have that delightful extra bit come back up to haunt you.
My son was a vomity baby. Made life rather interesting until we nutted through the different possibilities and made some changes (OH TO KNOW BACK THEN WHAT I KNOW NOW!!)
Is it reflux?
Is it SILENT reflux? (which I have certain opinions on, but that's for another conversation)
Are we experiencing suboptimal breastfeeding?
Is it cows milk allergy?
Or could it be something else?
There happens to be one muscle that is primarily involved with keeping stomach content inside the stomach. And guess what controls that muscle? The VAGUS nerve.
Heard of that guy? Quite a popular one.
You know what else could be going on? Coordination issues. Have you tried coordinating 10 children in a classroom? How about 20? Well - swallowing alone requires the coordination of 60 sets of muscle to get the job done!
So can chiropractic help? Well, maybe. There are many case reports and studies out there (including one I've had published in Breastfeeding Review!) but the latest systematic review says that even though the research is favourable, it is still inconclusive.
Might be worth a chat though!

A couple of years ago I had the honour of meeting two little kids with some hip issues. One was 13 months old, the other 30 months old, and they both had HIP DYSPLASIA.
But more than that, both had trialled bracing and were just not getting the improvement we typically see with this intervention.
So what did we do? We worked on musculoskeletal dysfunction in their tailbone.
Guess what?
Both cases resolved. Completely. Now I'm not saying that it was manual therapy alone, as we can't rule out natural history or just delayed response to the bracing, but changes definitely occurred.
And even better, another set of researchers from a rehabilitation centre in Italy had a similar result from a case of theirs; an improvement in gross motor after 5 months of manual treatment (Valeria Giorgi, Giovanni Apostolo & Laura Bertelè (05 May 2024): Treatment of developmental hip dysplasia with manual therapy following Pavlik harness failure: a case report with long-term follow-up, Journal of Manual & Manipulative Therapy).
This is quite exciting! We have been involved in opening up a new avenue for research (these are the only two papers so far!!) of involving manual therapy to improve outcomes for hip dysplasia!
Stay tuned - I'm sure there will be more to come!
(And if you want a bit more on hip dysplasia, have a watch of this: https://youtu.be/mzH8g5LkGJg )
