My Book Bag

We're loving this beautiful book, Now by Antoinette Portis. After another week of being stuck at home sick, this book is a lovely reminder to live in the moment and to enjoy the little things in life. Yesterday we painted some gorgeous Autumn leaves and enjoyed all the snuggles on the couch. ❤🤧

'Now' was one of the stunning books our 'Journey Makers' subscribers received during our Happiness Month in April.

Anyone else's family constantly sick? I feel like we've been sick every second week this year! First year of daycare for my girls and we are experiencing all the germs!

These are some of our favourite books about managing and coping with anger. They are all perfect for exploring one of the biggest emotions that our little people experience.

This month our Wildthings subscribers (2-4 year olds) received Kevin, by Rob Biddulph and This is Not My Hat, by Jon Klassen. Subscribers also received all the bits and pieces to role-play the elements of honesty (or lack of!) from This is Not My Hat, and magic noodles to create their own imagination friend!

The story Kevin, by Rob Biddulph follows a little boy called Sidney. Sidney is always in trouble and to make matters worse, he insists on blaming the mess he makes on his invisible friend – Kevin. This, however, changes when Sidney actually meets Kevin and discovers what it is like to be on the receiving end of bad behaviour. In a magical world of make-believe, Sidney finally comes to realise that he's been selfish and resolves to put things right for both his invisible friend and his very own mum. This is a beautiful story about honesty and telling the truth.

This is Not My Hat by Jon Klassen is a fun and humorous story about a little fish that steals a hat from a bigger fish. The little fish runs away and hides from the big fish, thinking that he won't get caught. The little fish even goes as far as trying to convince a crab to lie for him. The illustrations in this book are fun and insightful, depicting details and expression that adds that extra bit of humour and intrigued. A fun story, about honesty, right and wrong.

This month our 'Newbie' (0-2) subscribers received a fun push a pull story about Pinocchio and a copy of the hilarious book, " I Want My Hat Back', by Jon Klassen. Subscribers also received some story stones with animals pictures to find Bear's hat, and a Pinocchio inspired building block game.

Introducing our newest book bundle based on the hilarious book, " I just ate my friend" by Heidi Mckinnon.

This funny and entertaining story follows a monster who is in search of a new friend (because he ate his last one!) It's a hilarious story about friendship and belonging, full of bright and colourful monsters of all different shapes and sizes!

The activities included in this bundle all involve creating your own monsters from different mediums (including your own wind-up walking monsters, scratch art, slime, paint and playdough.) Children can then enjoy playing with the monsters and acting out the appropriate ways to eat (oops, I mean make!) new friends!

This month our Wildthings subscribers (2-5 year olds) received the Super Duper You, by Sophie Henn and The Perfect Fit by Naomi Jones. Subscribers also got to get creative with a scratch art photo frame and delved deeper into the themes of the perfect fit with play dough!

The Super Super You is a gorgeous story that celebrates all the different, extraordinary and sometimes contradictory things that are special about each of us. The story follows a big brother who is telling his little sister how her unique traits and passions make her who you she is. Some days she is bold and adventurous, other days things don’t seem ‘quite right’. On one day she likes dressing up in frills and sparkles, on another she prefers a superhero outfit. We love the message of this book: whatever you are, be proud of it!

The Perfect Fit is an endearing story about friendship, uniqness and fitting in. It follows Triangle who is worried, she can’t roll wonderfully like the circles, or stack beautifully like the squares and feels like she’s ruining their fun games with her pointy bits! So she sets out to find some friends just like her. Along the way she meets other wonderful shapes, before finally finding her people, the triangles. She fits perfectly of course, but quickly realises that everyone being the same is actually quite boring, and she misses being different. So she works to bring all the shapes together for fun and friendship.

It's OK to Be Different is a bright and cheerful picture book which helps young children understand that there are no two people exactly alike. The fun and colourful faces are extremely engaging for young children and are sure to grab their attention. It's a beautiful book for helping children to embrace the differences in the world around them and be proud of themselves and their families. We love how they give fun and child friendly examples that are used to celebrate uniqueness: It's okay to be a different colour. It's okay to dance by yourself. It's okay to wear glasses. It's okay to have a pet worm.... It's okay to be different!

A Colour of His Own is a gorgeous little book which follows the story of a chameleon who is desperate to find his true colours. All the other animals have their own colour. Pig is pink. Elephant is grey. But the chameleon changes colour whenever he sits on something a different colour. Then he meets another chameleon who tells him that their ability to change to different colours makes them more unique and special, and suddenly the chameleon learns to feel comfortable in his own skin!

This month's Journey Maker's Book (8-10 year olds) included two absolutely stunning books. It also included a fun string painting activity using the beautiful eco-crayon paints and a sand art pictured frame.

Just Ask, by Sonia Sotomayer is a thoughtful and endearing book which opens up a discussion about differences. The book explores how feeling different, especially as a kid, can be tough. Using the metaphor of a garen the book explains that in the same way that different types of plants and flowers make a garden more beautiful and enjoyable, different types of people make our world more vibrant and wonderful. It encourages children to ask thoughtful questions when they're unsure and be accepting of other's differences.

Be You by Peter H Reynolds is a gorgeous story that dares children to be themselves. The bright colourful book is centered around building self-esteem, with each page including a suggestion for children to embrace their characteristics that make each of us uniquely ourselves. Children are encouraged to be brave, adventurous, different and curious in a way that is both inspiring and engaging. The story follows a diverse range of characters, with inspiring quotes and interesting situations to send the overall message of celebrating individuality and the importance of being you!

Our last special book bundle completely sold out! So we thought we'd introduce another one to help keep kids busy and connected whilst stuck at home!
