Queensland police punishments reversed due to legal technicality will again face discipline after minister announces law changes
Misbehaving police whose punishments were reversed will again face discipline under new laws introduced following a series of damning Courier-Mail reports.

Misbehaving police whose punishments were reversed because of a legal technicality will again face discipline under law amendments being introduced, following a series of reports in The Courier-Mail.

The move – which will now re-validate demotions and disciplinary action – could impact up to 200 officers, including at least 20 officers who were facing dismissals and at least 10 who were demoted and re-promoted because of the technicality.

It’s understood the police service had paid out a combined $300,000 to officers who had their demotions reversed which will now have to be repaid.

It comes after The Courier-Mail revealed a senior detective and serial sexual harasser who made false explicit claims about Queensland’s two most powerful women had been re-promoted despite lying about a sexual encounter with the Premier and claiming that the Police Commissioner made “come f– k me” eyes at him.

Detective Senior Sergeant Brad Hallett was demoted and made non-operational, but was recently reinstated on a technicality.

The comments, found to be completely false and disrespectful, were among numerous incidents involving the senior sergeant raised by the Commission of Inquiry into Queensland Police Service’s Responses to Domestic and Family Violence.

He was referred to in the inquiry as “Officer Brick”.

He was one of potentially dozens expected to have their punishments overturned – as revealed by The Courier-Mail – after the Court of Appeal found two separate internal investigations were not conducted properly.

In one case an officer, a senior detective with the Ethical Standards Command, took the service to the Queensland Industrial Relations Commission arguing they did not nominate the specific person who would be investigating a complaint made against him.

In the other case, a sergeant took the service to the Supreme Court saying the disciplinary process was not handled correctly because the “prescribed officer” nominated did not deal with his matter.

Both officers won their matters, and the QPS appealed but both matters were dismissed in the Court of Appeal.

It’s understood the legislative amendments will impact decisions made between October 2019 and March 2023.

The Crime and Corruption Commission is also believed to be taking separate action against up to five officers which it is seeking to have demoted or dismissed.

Police Minister Mark Ryan today told parliament he would make amendments to the Police Service Administration Act which would re-validate disciplinary processes.

“As a result of the Court of Appeal decision there are a number of disciplinary decisions that are invalid,” he said.

“Public confidence in the integrity of the Queensland Police Service should not be undermined by minor noncompliance with a procedural requirement.

“But for the technical error in the initial referral, the disciplinary process managing the complaint was appropriate with the complaint properly investigated and assessed resulting in a disciplinary decision that reflects the seriousness of the conduct involved.

“I will therefore move amendments to the Police Service Administration Act to validate disciplinary referrals erroneously made under Part 7 of the Police Service Administration Act.

“The amendment will ensure the original disciplinary decision is given legal effect and the policy effect of 7.10 of the Police Service Administration Act is upheld.

“Additionally it enables the Commissioner to take all necessary action to impose the original disciplinary sanction or professional development strategy thus ensuring appropriate standards of behaviour are upheld which promote and maintain public confidence and officer confidence in the service.”

A Queensland cop has been suspended from duty after allegedly driving a police car drunk while on shift.

Townsville Sergeant David Lynch was stood down on Monday and has since been charged with driving under the influence, speeding, and driving dangerously.

Police will allege Sergeant Lynch, 56, was on duty when he drove a police car while almost four times over the legal limit.

Police will allege Sergeant Lynch drove dangerously and was also caught speeding.

The Courier-Mail understands Sergeant Lynch was driving to conduct a wide load es**rt when the incident happened earlier this year.

It’s understood he was taken to hospital on arrival at the job.

The officer returned a blood alcohol concentration of 0.199 per cent – almost four times over the legal driving limit.

The Ethical Standards Command investigated the incident and revealed on Monday Sergeant Lynch had been suspended from duty and charged over the incident.

He is facing charges of dangerous operation of a vehicle while adversely affected by an intoxicating substance, driving under the influence of liquor and disobeying the speed limit.

Sergeant Lynch primarily worked at Townsville Station and in the police communication centre.

He also occasionally relieved as district duty officer during the later years of his career.

The Ethical Standards Command were contacted but said it was unable to comment as the matter was before the courts.

“In keeping with our commitment to high standards of behaviour, transparency and accountability, we have undertaken to inform the public when a member of the service faces serious allegations of misconduct,” a spokesman said.

Sergeant Lynch will face court on August 22.

Again dis seems like they aren't as safe as they thought they were?

Four teens charged, one on run after armed robberies, wild police chase

A cafe in a ritzy Brisbane suburb is among a number of premises allegedly held up at gunpoint by a group of teens as young as 14 who then led police on a wild chase in a stolen luxury car.

A group of teenagers have been charged after robbing multiple businesses at gunpoint and leaving a trail of destruction along the Pacific Motorway in a stolen car, where a woman and child were injured.

The crime spree, which the youths shared to social media, began about 3.30am on Sunday when a boy threatened an employee with a gun and demanded the till at a Gardiner Rd service station.

The employee complied and was not physically injured, but the boy left the scene in a blue 2014 Audi S3 reported stolen from a Helensvale property on Saturday night.

Five minutes later, a boy armed with a gun stole a cash register from a Juers Rd servo in Kingston and fled in the same car.

About 6am, the group targeted another business, this time a cafe on Alexandria St in Ascot, also robbing them with a weapon.

Tribe Coffee Co. in Ascot was also targeted, with hooded youths threatening a worker with guns while she was opening the store about 6am.

The woman knew something was strange when she saw people loitering around in the carpark.

Two of the youths then approached, one armed with a rifle and the other with a pistol, and demanded her belongings, yelling “all of it, all of it”.

CCTV footage shows the moment they approach her, dressed in caps and hoodies and holding weapons.

The employee is heard asking the boy “what’s that?”, and he replies “it’s a f--king gun, c--t”.

The thieves made off with her bag, which contained her phone and other items, but was unable to get into the till. Scared they would come back, the worker then hid in the backyard of a neighbouring house until they left and waited for help.

Tribe Coffee Co. owner Mark Hardingham said his staff member was “shaken”.

“It was pretty confronting for her,” Mr Hardingham said.

“She refused to open the cart and that scared them off. She thought something didn’t feel right.”

This is the third time in 14 months the shop has been targeted.

Mr Hardingham said youth crime was “beyond a joke”.

“You want to employ young people and give them a safe working environment, but what do you do,” he said.

“It’s sad, a crackdown is needed. It puts a lot of businesses at risk.”

The group then left and started driving towards the Gold Coast, where police tracked them with PolAir.

Footage taken by the youths, two aged 14, one aged 15 and one aged 18, inside the car show them holding up guns, flaunting the weapons.

“Look at this cuz,” one says in the video.

“Show them the guns, more guns cuz.”

About 9.30am, the Audi was sighted along the Pacific Motorway near Coomera before crashing into another car on Foxwell Rd about 9.50am.

Two people ran from the car on foot, injuring a woman and child along Beattie Dr during their attempt to flee.

Police had closed in and arrested them on Foxwell Rd. A firearm was also found nearby.

The other two teens took off in the Audi, but just after 10am a tyre deflection device was deployed at Logan and police took the pair into custody.

Police found another two guns in the car.

Police investigate second shooting at Morningside in five days
Morningside is the scene of two shootings within the past five days after an incident involving several rounds of gunfire on Sunday night.

Morningside has been the scene of two separate incidents within the past five days.

Police allege that several shots were fired into a home on Greendale St about 9.40pm on Sunday.

Several people were home at the time of the shooting, and though no one was injured, investigators found five impact areas on the front of the house.

This incident follows a shooting last Thursday when a 27-year-old Carindale man opened fire in a Morningside KFC carpark.

The man was soon arrested and police seized a stash of weapons in the suspect’s vehicle.

Though no links between the two incidents have been alleged, investigations are continuing and police are actively seeking information regarding Sunday night’s shooting.

Two families and the community of Wyndham Vale are in mourning following a driveway attack by a gang of masked killers.

Atem Atem, 29, and 22-year-old Ayuel Akuei both were shot dead. With many in the family believing it was a case of mistaken identity as the men kept screaming “who are you?”.

It is believed their beloved family dog Randy was then targeted after he began to bark at the armed trespassers.

This shouldn’t be happening in Victoria – let alone Australia!

Labor is hopeless when it comes to youth crime. From Andrews $420M empty youth prison to Albanese’s $50M budget cut that supported high-risk youth - that was keeping them in school, away from gangs and getting them into work.

The Liberals acknowledged the issue, developed solutions and backed it with $120M. Unfortunately, under Labor they’ve been cut and dumped.

Labor need to act.

No family should have to suffer such a loss. My thoughts and prayers are with both families and their friends during this awful time.
