Our identity, land and self-determination Always Was and Always will Be innately a part of being born on Country - as part of Country - connected to all living things: plants, animals, weather, language; and people.
First Nations people are the custodians of Country. Country speaks to them, as they speak to Country.
If we ask ourselves in everything we do โHow does, what I do help Country?โ We will forever be connected, protected and the protector.
Mabo Day occurs annually on 3 June and commemorates Eddie Koiki Mabo (29 June 1936โ21 January 1992) from our Mer (Murray Is.) Community, whose campaign for First Nations land rights led to a landmark decision of the High Court of Australia that, on 3 June 1992, overturned the legal fiction of terra nullius which had characterised Australian law with regards to land and title since 1770.
๐ The 1992 Mabo High Court decision acknowledged the prior and enduring rights to land of the First Peoples.
On this day we Acknowledge and pay out Respect to all Traditional Custodians of the land in which we meet โค๏ธ

Sunshine Coast Councilโs National Reconciliation Week Launch 2024 ๐
Have you got your First Nations Sunshine Coast Libraries card? โค๏ธ๐๐ค๐ค๐๐
The National Reconciliation Week theme for 2024, Now More Than Ever, is a reminder to all of us that no matter what, the fight for justice and the rights of First Nations (Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander) people will โand must โcontinue.
There have been many moments in Australiaโs reconciliation journey that make us want to turn away. But when things are divisive, the worst thing we can do is disengage or disconnect.
Now more than ever, we need to tackle the unfinished business of reconciliation. We know that the 6.2 million Australians who voted YES are committed to better outcomes for First Nations people, and are with us.
Reconciliation supporters must stand up to defend and uphold the rights of First Nations peoples. To call out racism wherever we encounter it, and to actively reinforce the voices of First Nations peoples across this continent.
Now more than ever, the work continues. In treaty making, in truth-telling, in understanding our history, in education, and in tackling racism. We need connection. We need respect. We need action. And we need change.
Now more than ever, we need reconciliation.
โWe apologise for the laws and policies of successive Parliaments and governments that have inflicted profound grief, suffering and loss on these our fellow Australians.โ
Prime Minister Kevin Rudd, Apology to Australian Indigenous peoples, 13 February 2008.

A great story about how Torres Strait Islanders have contributed to the railway network and Australiaโs economic future.
Well done Ella Archibald-Binge!
These Torres Strait Islanders broke a world record. Their story has largely gone untold, until now Gehamat Loban didn't set out to make history when he left his island home at 14 but he and 70 others from the Torres Strait Islands did just that with a world record that still stands today.
