You need animal foods for strong teeth!

I have a lot of stories but I want to share one that came to my mind recently. I had a vegan client come to me. She was having serious tooth pain for months in many of her teeth. She used clove oil, oil pulling, remineralising toothpaste and all the natural remedies but knew her teeth were disintegrating and that she would likely need a few fillings.

I’m pretty upfront with vegans and tell them that I will recommend animal products before they book a consult. I don’t want to waste either of our time if that isn’t an option for them. And I’m totally unoffended if they don’t want to work with me! I used to be a stubborn vegan back in the day 😜

Well this client was super open even though she was somewhat of a vegan influencer. I told her something along the lines of “no more fruit. You need raw cheese, raw butter, animal products and cod liver oil.” These not only have calcium and other minerals in their unaltered state, but they have fat soluble, easily absorbed vitamins (D, A, K2, and E) that we do not get from plant foods! These are the little escorts that get the minerals into the bones and teeth. There is a reason we crave these foods!

To my surprise she changed overnight. The next morning I got a text of her breakfast which was eggs, raw cheese, butter on sourdough and cod liver oil! I love people like that who just go all in!

She said almost immediately her tooth pain went away and didn’t come back. She was hooked. Next time I talked to her she was even doing butter in her ☕️

I’ve had a few stories like this and have healed my own cavities as well with nutritional changes (as reluctantly confirmed by a non-holistic dentist). This is just one reason I’m an advocate for animal foods, especially raw dairy and cod liver oil. Organ meats are a great source of some of the fat soluble vitamins as well.

Tag a friend who has cavities and is scared of raw diary 🧈

Did you know omnivores, vegans, and vegetarians have very different gut flora? It changes based on the food source. If you’re wanting to add in more variety on the carnivore diet, here are a few ways to prepare your gut to digest new foods better. Link in bio

For anyone with gut problems: indigestion, reflux, heartburn, SIBO, crohn’s, UC, whatever it may be, it’s important to start at the source of digestion. Our stomach should be a highly acidic environment. It’s the first line of defence against microbe overgrowth. Having a highly acidic stomach is particularly important if you have small intestinal bacteria overgrowth.

Bacteria, yeasts, and other microbes MOSTLY die in an acidic stomach meaning there will be less in the small intestines. Some will make it which is okay because small numbers of non-resident microbes in their planktonic form don’t cause problems. You would find them, with lots of other microbes in anyones gut. As far as I know everyone has staphylococcus and streptococcus for example, but not everyone has staph or strep symptoms all the time. It’s when the environment of your gut changes and they grow, reproduce, create little colonies and start taking over that we tend to see problems.

Stomach acid greatly protects against this and most people have too little stomach acid, even if they have reflux and heartburn. Too little stomach acid doesn’t signal to the esophagal sphincter to close. Adequate stomach acid signals to shut it so food doesn’t come back out.

A few ways to increase stomach acid and support its defense are:

1. 5 minutes before eating have a little diluted ACV or lemon juice. 1:1 ratio of ACV/ lemon juice to water is good. These increase acidity. Saukeruat juice also works.

2. Chew really well! Lots of chewing releases nitrate in your saliva. This mixes with the bacteria in your mouth and turns to nitrite which makes stomach acid even more powerful. When nitrite was added to stomach acid it killed almost all food borne pathogens like salmonella, e-coli and listeria. This may be helpful if you are get food poisoning easily.

3. Avoid drinking with food. Drinking a big glass of water with meals dilutes stomach acid. So either drink a lot 15 minutes prior to a meal or have tiny sips and “chew” it well so it doesn’t dilute your stomach acid.

It’s a shame that so many people exclude dairy because they think they should. Of course some people do need to stay when there is a true allergy present.

But choosing to be dairy free can have some consequences especially if the goal is healing your gut. In my last post I wrote about how cows have more bacteria-filled digestive organs than humans. It’s how they can take grass and turn it into a variety of animal proteins and fats that humans can easily digest.

Cows bacteria specifically turn plants into short chain fatty acids like butyrate found primarily in high fat dairy. Short chain fatty acids feed the lining of our gut in many ways which is why butter and animal fats are such a huge part of the GAPS diet. They support mucus production which protects the lining, help to maintain a proper PH making it inhospitable to non- resident organisms and feeds the epithelial cells. I remember reading a study of colitis patients having great success after incorporating ghee (very high in butyrate) enemas!

Our body (well the bacteria in our bowel) make short chain fatty acids from plant fibre just like cows do, but many people who have a compromised gut aren’t able to do this efficiently. This is just another way that healthy animal products can help to heal your body and provide it with the nutrition that it needs 🧈

I just love that there are multiple ways that God provides us with what we need to heal. The success I’ve seen with those doing carnivore type diets shows that even the most chronically sick people can recover from nutrient dense food alone!

If you’re interested, one account I’ve enjoyed following is . What a powerful story of healing with a carnivore diet!

MEAT! I don’t care what the vegans will tell you, we are designed to eat meat. We crave it, we need it and we even try to make plant products taste like it. 🍔

But why is meat so beneficial? One reason is that the nutrition is much easier for our body to absorb.

Did you know that your body doesn’t really break down your food? It’s actually the beneficial bacteria in your intestines that break it down into nutrients that we can easily absorb. This is one reason digestive problems can happen after a round of antibiotics. You’re killing the little guys who break down your food!

In regards to plant food, it’s very hard to get the nutrition out, which is one reason you would still be starving no matter how much kale you eat. Yes, when pulled apart in a laboratory there is a certain amount of vitamins and minerals present and on paper it looks impressive. But even those with very healthy digestive tracts don’t get much of that nutrition as it is bound by fibre.

The cow has 4 stomach like organs full of bacteria ( unlike human stomachs which shouldn’t have much bacteria). They chew and spit up and chew grass like 100x before it even enters their multiple stomachs. All that chewing and digesting = interactions with lots of beneficial bacteria that turn your veggies and grains into nutrition that humans can easily absorb.

Moral of the story- animal products like meat, butter, eggs are predigested foods. The nutrition is readily available and easy to absorb because the cows bacteria has broken the fibre down for us. And it tastes fantastic.

This is just one reason many people do well on a carnivore type diet.

I made a YouTube video that I actually think every person should watch. Magnesium is an essential mineral and it’s estimated about 80% of adults are deficient. This is likely from industrial agriculture which strips the soil from minerals making our produce low in magnesium. Other contributing factors include eating refined carbs, sugar and coffee ☕️.

I’ve found magnesium to relieve restless leg syndrome which I always get in pregnancy and breastfeeding. It also regulates blood pressure which helps prevent headaches. It aids in deep sleep, and helps muscle cramps and spasms. It even fixes Body odour!

This homemade magnesium oil is so easy! It takes under 5 seconds to whip up and is a small fraction of the magnesium oils at the store. Let me know if this helps you ❤️

Happy national daughters day to my special girls. Grateful for them and how they have changed my life every day

“Train up a child in the way that they should go and they will not depart from it”.

Something I’ve been thinking about since becoming a mother is how life is a lot harder with children but also much more rich and rewarding.

Going to the farmers market used to be my favourite part of the week. I’d carpool with my sister in love, chat, get a coffee after, and then often end up at the beach. Now it’s a little more stressful. I’m usually rushed between naps, breastfeeding and changing diapers in the car, multi tasking the whole time and then the produce sits on the counter until the kids go to sleep that night and I can finally organise it.

But It’s still one of the highlights of the week. My 3 year old can identify most vegetables and fruits. She gets excited to ride in the trolly and tip the musicians. She likes picking out fruit and she tries most things I put in the cart. I’m amazed how much she takes in and I’m proud to raise girls who know where food comes from and who value local farmers.

These are all things I had to learn as an adult and I’m still learning daily ❤️

My daughter has been asking for a spoonful of butter after dinner and I happily say yes! Butter has been given such a bad reputation because it is high in saturated fat. But did you know that our brain is about 60% fat and most of that is saturated? By eating butter we are feeding our brain! This is extra important at this age when our kids are developing and learning so much every day.

It’s not just our brains that need saturated fat. Every cell in our body has a membrane that is made of fat. The saturated fat is particularly important as it gives the membranes a durable structure. Adequate saturated fat means strong cells that translates to healthy hormones, teeth, bone structure, hair, skin and obviously good mental health!

I get a lot of comments about how calm and happy (assuming she’s not tired 😜) my daughter is. I always make a point to say that it’s not just her nature, it’s the nurture! I give 90% of the credit to a diet with adequate fat and protein. This keeps her blood sugar stable and her moods enjoyable. On days that I haven’t prioritised this, and she has eaten a lot more fruit and carbs we see a lot more tantrums and it’s not fun! I encourage you to follow your children’s cues and let them have some butter from grass fed cows 🐄 🧈

I’m starting to really love our girls. I get to go on egg hunts every day, they love rummaging in the compost pile as much as I do and they even ate a huge huntsman spider for me this morning.

By nature I’m a more low energy person. I never struggle to sleep, very rarely have anxiety and am quite calm.

However, this can also mean I’m easily exhausted and can quickly get addicted to coffee which is why it’s a rare treat for me!

Before I cleaned up my diet I ate a ton of processed foods and napped for 2 hours a day! This was on top of sleeping at least 8 hours a night. Going vegan in 2010 certainly didn’t help because I just became anaemic and low in tons of essential nutrients 😜.

Finally, when I started eating clean pastured animal products, lots of butter, and organic produce I saw a lot of progress with energy. Shocking I know.

I still tend to be on the low energy side but It’s nothing like it used to be. There are a few supplements and foods that help big time so I try to take those daily. I’ve also seen big benefits from going outside in the morning for 10-15 minutes. This helps catecholamine production for energy. It also helps your body to produce serotonin which is our natural antidepressant. Serotonin converts to melatonin when the sun goes down and is obviously necessary for sleep. And of course it causes vitamin D production assuming you have enough cholesterol and aren’t taking anything that would inhibit the conversion.

Any other low energy folks out there that need the sun? Where my fellow iguanas at? 🦎

I know it’s hard to believe but I don’t have a perfect diet. Not that a perfect diet exists anyway. I swear as soon as my feet touched down on American soil all I could think about was chipotle and cakebatter ice cream. I seriously haven’t had cake batter ice cream in 15 years but just knowing it was within reach made me want it 😂.

Even though I’m certainly eating a little different than I do in Australia, I’m also trying to have a big salad every day. This was breakfast. Leftover venison steak that my dad hunted, a huge pile of greens. Primal kitchen ranch dressing, sauerkraut, onion, cucumber, tomato and raw cheese. Hit the spot!
