Work in Progress | Sept 2022.

Curatorial statement
By Melissa Ramos

‘Work in progress’ curation focuses on dance films that discerns the effects of capitalisation embodied within labour and the entrapments of structures that bind people to the motions of debt. This series of dance films explore narratives that reveal the many layers of how this disrupts, deceive, disconnect and entangle our body & mind.

‘TrainEscape’ by Francesca Gozdek (Italy) frames the fragility within working individuals, traversing through the symmetry of systems. Designed to comply to the frameworks of labour, here we are taken through the psychological worlds of each dancer. Wearisome, disfigured, unhinged, revealing the pressures of society, a yearn for the desire to escape a ‘disconnected’ world.

‘Insomnia’ by Kristýna Bartošová (Czech Republic) questions: what happens to time when we stop sleeping? Reflecting on when our bodies are depleted, unbalanced, and over-worked. Time is expressed through an unconscious lens, distant from the body and and craving for the natural instincts to feel and be conscious again.

'60 Pulses' by Aliki Chiotaki (Greece) is a journey through the structures of ‘hierarchy, submitted to the entrapments of the fabrics of society . A woman makes her way through the concrete systems,
the act of repetition attest the condition of the body as an elusive phenomenon that disappears even as it occurs. She falls only to rise again.

'Knock' by Running Man Australia is set in a dystopian world, where we see a man siting alone in a room, disconnected from the world, his business attire denotes ‘work’. In a parallel world, we are then taken to three young boys having a sleep over, telling each horror stories. A cross-over occurs between the man's life in disconnection and the future of one of the boy's very own reality. Questioning the route from childhood to adulthood, and whether the design is predefined.

A constant thread with all four dance films, is the fantasy to escape, reclaim, reconnect & return to our innate body.

17 septembrie. Work in Progress | Brașov

✨Upcoming Screendance Tour: 60 Pulses by Aliki Chiotaki (Greece)

Screening in Romania 🇷🇴 & Hungary 🇭🇺 September 2022
As part of UNFOLD MOTION

——

60 Pulses

A female figure smashed into her own world, submitted to a bizarre journey of entrapment. Moves fiercely onto a narrow, rusty old space surrounded by windows that reflect the raging sea. The intense body movements of the dancer explore the idea of making the effort to adjust the moment by moment of timing of action to test, to provoke the nature of the body.
She plays between quick and suspended, abrupt and subtle rhythm. The act of repetition attest the condition of the body as an elusive phenomenon that disappears even as it occurs. She falls only to rise again. Never stop.
The hyper electro -acoustic sound adds an aura of discomfort and strangeness to this presence where stands acts and reacts in an on-going circle.

On a hill in the distance, stands a lone building, which she discovers is a long abandoned school hall. A little sun penetrates the dirty glass. An upright piano sits in the far corner.
She takes off her muddy boots and with confidence in her gait, strides across to the piano and pulls it by one corner. The rusted wheels are jammed and it pivots, creating an arc. A line is carved in layers of compacted dust and the ancient wooden floor splinters with the weight of the instrument.
In the centre of the room, hinged on one foot, she extends her leg and rotates swiftly and with graceful power. Her feet trace, etch and carve in circular movements, creating marks in the layers of dirt. Her body contorts. She throws herself in controlled but frenetic choreography. The movements increase in size and vigour as a pattern emerges. Finally she stands back to witness the impression her dance has etched on the floor.
