Let’s learn something new!

Chess is often cited by psychologists as an effective way to improve memory function. Also allowing the mind to solve complex problems and work through ideas, it is no wonder that chess is recommended in the fight against Alzheimers. Some contend that it can increase one’s intelligence, though that is a more complex topic. The effects of chess on young individuals had led to chess being introduced in school districts and various countries. It has been shown to improve children’s grades and other positive effects as well.

As you know it’s school holidays, so we will have our school holiday opening hours from the 8th Jan until 25th Jan.
School holiday opening hours:
- Mondays: 10-3pm
- Wednesdays: 10-3pm
- Thursdays: 10-3pm
- Sundays: 10-3pm

For school holidays payments are $20 per week on the weeks in which you choose to come in or $60 for the 3 weeks.

Membership is $200 per term
Lessons are $50 per term

Just a friendly reminder Penrith chess club is a paid membership, the membership allows us to be able to afford to keep the club going. We try to remain affordable for all.

Will Pragg be able to win against the final boss?

At only 18 years old Pragg is in the final for Fide World Cup 2023, after beating both GM Fabiano Caruana who is ranked 2nd in world ratings and GM Hikaru Nakamura who is ranked 3rd.

Pragg is now going up against GM Magnus Carlsen who is ranked 1st in world ratings.

After the tie-break of Round 3, we say bye to GM Anish Giri, who was knocked out of the event by GM Nijat Abasov. GM Teimour Radjabov also fell at the hands of GM Jaime Santos Latasa, while GM Wesley So was moves away from an exit of his own.

Now we see Hikaru V Pragg & Magnus V Vincent, who will win!?

There will be 8 rounds in the Open and 7 in the Women's tournament. Each round will be played under a knock-out system, consisting of a 2-game match. In the case of a tie, the players will play a rapid and, if necessary, a blitz tiebreak until the winner is determined.

The winners of the top-three places in both sections will qualify for the 2024 Candidates tournament.

The FIDE tournament has kicked off in Baku, Azerbaijan.

Each round will have 2 games & 1 tie break game

Round 1 has 114 games.
The highlight of Round 1, Game 1 was 14-year-old Turkish IM Ediz Gurel (rated 2500) who defeated the more experienced Serbian GM Velimir Ivic (2590), who made a terrible mistake on move 21, allowing a piece sacrifice which led to unavoidable checkmate.

FIDE World Chess Championship Tiebreak round! ♟️

Last night ended in a draw which means both Ian & Ding are on 7 points. As last night was the last of the classical rounds, the championship will now enter into a tiebreak. The tiebreak will consist of 4 rapid games and then if they’re still tied it will go onto 4 blitz games.

This will be an exciting night, a must watch!
By the end of tonight we will have a new World champion! ⭐️
