We were thrilled to embrace our newest students during Orientation Week last Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday! All days brimmed with a blend of information and enjoyment, aiming to equip students with everything necessary for a seamless start to their academic journey.
The agenda featured an engaging range of workshops, school presentations, registration sessions, social activities and a delightful array of food, coffee and delicious gelato. Registrar Neil Colombari explained, 'Students had a great time, and some long-term staff declared that this semester's Orientation was '“the best ever” and “the smoothest ever”, with this being the direct result of the small team of staff who planned and organised the event for Excelsia's newest students.’ The success of the event hinged on the dedicated efforts of our staff and student volunteers, so thank you to everyone that helped across the week!
After finishing a Bachelor of Music in flute and working for a year and a half, Mikaela Wu was encouraged by staff at Excelsia to do a master’s. ‘I’d had enough of spending time on one instrument (flute) and practicing on my own. When I found out I could do my master’s in conducting and hang out with people all the time, I decided to start my studies.’

Excelsia College's recent staging of 'Bustown' by Lachlan Philpott, part of the Bachelor of Dramatic Art program, enjoyed a triumphant run last week, earning accolades from both audience members and college staff. The production featured 2nd and 3rd year students performing under the expert direction of Kylie Bonaccorso, a director and movement lecturer, within a meticulously crafted world designed by alumnus Jacob Parr. This production highlighted the remarkable talent and dedication within the Excelsia community, with current students and alumni forming the majority of the production team and alumni making special appearances in the cast.
Director Kylie Bonaccorso shared, 'Bustown has been a beautiful ride! Right from the first rehearsal, this amazing cast dived in and made themselves at home in this dystopian story. They found the depth of the characters and took all of us on a journey which I have loved. So grateful to have had an opportunity to work and play with this passionate and hardworking collective of cast and crew.'
Congratulations to everyone involved in the production!
Joshua Hinson’s love for the arts began at a young age, inspired by watching his mother perform. His early involvement in community theatre, particularly his role as ‘The Little Prince’ alongside his twin brother, set the stage for his future in the arts. ‘It planted a seed quite early on,’ Joshua recalls. However, it wasn’t until the disruptions of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 that he decided to pursue drama seriously. Encouraged by his mother, Joshua applied to Excelsia College, attracted by its Christian-based education and supportive environment. At Excelsia, he found a renewed passion for acting, realising he could ‘really play for the rest of my life’.

With a bachelor’s degree in science majoring in psychology already under his belt, Andy Chin found counselling to be the perfect fit for integrating Christian ministry. ‘Being a member of Wesley International Congregation, I knew of the then Wesley Institute (now Excelsia College) and its solid reputation, and I knew others who had studied there, so it made my decision easy. After I spent a season of seeking God in prayer, it was the right next step,’ explains Andy. In 1999, he took the plunge and enrolled in a Graduate Diploma of Counselling.

Excelsia College proudly presents Bustown, a compelling play written by Lachlan Philpott, directed by Kylie Bonaccorso, and brought to life by the talented second- and third-year Bachelor of Dramatic Art students. Bustown vividly captures the essence of small-town life, delving into the poignant decisions young people make to move to the city and the profound effects on the communities they leave behind.
'Breathe in deep, can you smell it? The scent of bus seats, vinyl, and sweat. Nothing else quite like it. See that yellow bus? That's our birthplace. Bustown. A whimsical haven of worn tires and scrap metal, far removed from the realm of Otherness. The residents of Bustown find comfort in their junkyard sanctuary, patiently awaiting the return of The Driver. However, Axel and Cressida are consumed by thoughts of Otherness. With a chain of keys within their grasp, how much longer can they resist the call to leave?'
