EIE - About the School - Photonic Systems Controller 30/01/2017

PhD student Andri Mahendra solves a key issue in the photonics integration industry.

In collaboration with physicists and engineers at CUDOS and the Australian Institute for Nanoscale Science and Technology (AINST) at the University of Sydney, Andri Mahendra, supervised by Professor Philip Leong and Professor Benjamin Eggleton, built an integrated multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) circuits controller for controlling photonic systems. The key advantages of this approach is that it enables reliable and adaptive reconfiguration of complex PICs.
PhD student Andri Mahendra, who designed and built the device, said the technology works simply by controlling conventional power supplies in a scalable manner with an integrated controller to provide larger numbers of output channels.

EIE - About the School - PSCAD seminar

We invite you to: WHAT’S NEW IN PSCAD APPLICATIONS – TRANSIENT STUDIES, HVDC AND WIND
As power systems evolve, the need for accurate, intuitive simulation tools becomes more and more important. With PSCAD™/EMTDC™ you can build, simulate, and model your systems with ease, providing limitless possibilities in power system simulation.

This half-day seminar covers the fundamentals of the study of electromagnetic transients in electrical networks. A number of application areas such as AC transients, fault and protection, transformer saturation, wind power, FACTS, power quality, as well as other power systems topics will be discussed with practical examples serving to illustrate the subjects. Several case studies, including in the NEM context, will be applied in detail to highlight practical situations encountered by engineers in the field.

EIE - About the School - NCSS Summer School 2013 - a great success

The school of EIE organised the embedded stream of the NCSS summer school 2013. Twenty-nine students and one teacher participated in the summer school.
They learnt programming Arduino starting from the basic task of blinking LED to building RF transmitter and receiver units for transmitting digital data over CB radios.
For the project, the students built a GPS tracker which transmitted the GPS coordinates via SMS. The system was fitted to a light aircraft and a tethered weather balloon for the final tests. In particular the School thanks Dr Johnson Thie and A/P Philip Leong for their strong involvement and dedication to a very successful summer school.
